your present config is more than enough for the tasks you listed - still if you want to upgrade then consider getting these :

AMD FX 4300 @ 6.8k
ECS A960M-MV @ 2.5k
Corsair/G-Skill/Kingston 4GB DDR3 1600 Mhz Ram @ 2.3k

Thanks topgear. Present config is 5yrs old and started crashing to a bsod hence wanted to upgrade. Any other config within 8k?

Topgear is right, your config is enough. His suggestion is upgradable - pop in a new CPU 2-3 years later. Cheaper builds might not be upgradable - and performance will also be very similar to your existing config.

And the BSOD could be due to software issue.
1. Try re-installing, possibly on a different partition.
2. Google with BSOD's error code and see what to suspect.
3. Run memtest86 to figure out memory problems - could also change the slot in which memory is installed.
4. Take the motherboard / cpu / RAM combination to a PC repair shop - they can try changing graphics card and run other diagnostics. If problem doesn't happen in the PC repair shop, it could be a PSU issue.

Spending up to Rs. 2000 to save your existing config might be worth it. Till then save money for a new config - topgear's config is for around 12.5 k, go for it when you are ready with cash. Till then, don't waste money if you can save current config.

If you save your current config, as a small upgrade, get 1 or 2 GB of RAM. That should help satisfy your upgrade itch :) and be worth it too.

Thanks amitkher, I tried everything on the BSOD, even reinstalled OS from scratch so its not a software issue. 4yrs back i accidentally bent the processor pins but it still worked. 3yrs back my processor started overheating so i installed cooler master hyper tx3 to keep it cool. Now a days my pc struggles to even open a pdf or run photoshop, i can tell its struggling to keep going by the constant acceleration of cooling fans everytime i start an application or even open a browser tab. I still want to keep this pc as a download rig (still works great as a download rig) after repairs but for regular use, its just too slow. I have the cash in hand and i have no plans of another upgrade atleast until warranty on the new parts runs out

Ok, X2 CPUs don't run that hot, so there is something wrong. Can you check temperature reported of the CPU? Both in the operating system while running heavy applications, and in BIOS just after that. If temperatures are high, looks more like a processor seating issue. Try getting it reseated by a PC repair shop.

Also, over time heat sinks get a lot of dust deposits, making them useless. Is that the case for your hyper TX3 too?

If you don't mind the cash spend now, don't go cheaper than what topgear suggets above.

I took out everything in summer, wiped clean, even applied fresh thermal paste that came with the cooler and put back expecting the problem to go away but no luck.

I'm just convinced i have to move on to a better pc for regular use. I just read that the FX4300 draws a lot of power and doesnt perform so well on single core. I have one config in mind, please tell me if its good enough for my needs
Proc - AMD Athlon II X2 270 3.4Ghz
Board - Gigabyte GA-78LMT-S2PT
RAM - Transcend DDR3-1333 4GB

Check this for single thread performance. X2 270 is worse than FX 4300

Also check the sticky thread (Avoid Transcend products!).

Intel is the champion of single thread performance as is visible from the benchmark page. If you are worried about single thread and power - get
1. Pentium G2020 : Intel 2.9 GHz LGA1155 G2020 Processor (Blue) for 3845
2. H61 motherboard : Gigabyte GA-H61M-DS2 Motherboard for 2950.

Can upgrade to an ivy bridge i5 after 2 years, check performance in benchmark page . No more upgradability than that.
topgear's config should have more upgradability, so I would still suggest that, though it has lower single thread performance.

thanks for your inputs amit, i think i will go with topgear's config. However i'm not sure of the aftersales service of ECS so i'll go with a compatible gigabyte board instead

Rashi provides RMA support for ECS but yes, if you can spending on a better motherboard is always recommended.

BTW, from your screnshot every thing looks normal but do check the HDD for bad sectors if you already have not with diagnostic tool from HDD manufacturer.

I did check the same in summer and everything looked normal
By the way here's what i got yesterday (Hyd prices)
AMD FX 4300 - 6750
Gigabyte GA-78LMT-S2PT - 2850
Corsair XMS3 DDR3 4GB 1600 - 2600
Bit Fenix Merc Alpha - 2850
They did not have Corsair CX430 so tried to sell me CX500 for 3600 and i backed out thinking i can get a better deal online. I want to add 2-3 cooling fans in the case so, should i go with Corsair or Seasonic 500W?
