PC Peripherals Slow system response with SATA W.D. HDD

Lately I noticed that my system gives a slow response time using programs and stuff, also last thing I tried which is; imported an mp3 music folder with 1200 mp3 files into a specific mp3 software library, it took me about 10 minutes!!

Don't know whats wrong...

Here are my system spec..:

Pentium4 2.80 Mhz
512 Ram
Intel D848PMB Motherboard
Windows XP SP2

Please help guys...
Any other info needed please ask...

  • Check in Device Manager/IDE controller/Sata controller if read caching/ write caching/command queing are enabled.
  • Defragment your drive.
  • Check for disk errors using chkdsk /f command.
  • Clear your windows/prefetch/ folder except for layout.ini file, reboot 2-3 times.
  • Also you can use a utility to defrag your paging file called PageDefrag

After trying out all that Dipdude suggested and if you dont get the proper result then check in Device Manger under IDE controllers if the drive is running in DMA mode and not PIO mode. If in PIO mode try change to DMA - if that option is not available then you may have to uninstall the channel on which the drive is located - on restart of the computer XP should reinstall the channel with the drive set for the correct Transfer Mode.

Well first check if DMA is enabled thru the bios....
Also under the device manager...if u get the option for speed test....try that

Well transfering data from 1 partition to another on the same hdd usually takes more time as compared to transfering data from 1 hdd to another hdd
Also if u were doing someothere work while transfering the data its bound to take more time....

If you have more than 1 hdd trying coying files from 1 hdd to another.....it might make the picture more clear

I checked under the IDE controllers in device manager, I don't have any SATA Controllers I only have these:

Intel(R) 8280 1EB Ultra ATA Storage Controllers
Intel(R) 8280 1EB Ultra ATA Storage Controllers
Primary IDE Channel
Primary IDE Channel
Secondry IDE Channel
Secondry IDE Channel

Wraith,
I'm not copying files,. I'm Imoprting music into a jukebox software (It takes 1 second for every file being read!!)

This is how it is on my Intel 875 chipset board....
Intel(R) 82801EB Ultra ATA Storage Controllers
Intel(R) 82801EB Ultra ATA Storage Controllers
Primary IDE Channel - PATA
Primary IDE Channel - SATA
Secondry IDE Channel - PATA
Secondry IDE Channel - SATA

So where is the problem do you think?
the intel chipset drivers ?

ooops... I should have been clear in what I meant to say ... I dont have the words PATA and SATA being displayed in Device manager - I wrote that only to indicate to you which was PATA AND SATA.... so sorry.... :blushing:

ntel does not have any drivers for my D848PMB model, except Intel chipset software..
and I tried installing this software many times but it doesn't update things in the device manager according to my eyes...

So i don't know if there is another way I can install the right drivers for my Mainboard model manually!

Ok in that case as eazy said check both the,

Primary IDE Channel

Primary IDE Channel

One of them is for Sata drive and another one of Pata.

Look for DMA, Read caching, Write caching, Command Queing are enabled.

Not sure, but your sata ide controller would not have DMA mode instead it would have Read caching, Write caching, Command Queing.

Well, I checked back and here is the results:

Primary IDE channel That supposted to be for SATA:

Device 0

Device Type : Auto Detection

Transfear Mode: DMA if Available

Current Transfer Mode: Not Applicable

Device 1

Device Type : Grayed out (Disabled)

Transfear Mode: DMA if Available

Current Transfer Mode: Multi-Word DMA Mode 2

And there is no such: Read caching, Write caching or Command Queing

Just read your replies, i think your ide controller is fine. Let Eazy confirm.

About your importing music into jukebox software, it is possible it took such a long time because it reads all the tag info's alongwith the mp3 name and location. That is one good reason for time delay.

Any other lag you noticed, or run some hard disk benchmarks and post back, like Everest or HD Tach 3 d/l if form here

Read my post no # 2 for other things you can do.

Here is a capture of all four channels ... At this moment I have 2 SATA HDDs and 2 Optical drives.... PATA channels get priority over SATA channels and get listed first in Device manager.

The left top is the Primary PATA channel - it is listed first in Device Manager - I have nothing attached here - if I attach a PATA HDD to the Primary Channel it shows up here.

The Top right is Primary SATA channel - has one SATA HDD attached DMA 5

The Bottom left is the upper one of the 2 Secondary channels in device manager - it is for PATA - the 2 Optical drives show as DMA2

The Bottom right is the Secondary channel which is last in list and this has a SATA HDD DMA 5

Both PATA and SATA have Primary and Secondary channels - in SATA a single device is attached to one channel unlike PATA which has 2 devices per channel. So 2 HDDs on SATA are Primary and Secondary - if you have more than 2 SATA connectors on a MoBo than the third and fourth SATA drives are listed as being attached to the Third and Fourth Channels.

OK, waters - after checking the screenies posted by Eazy -

1. Assuming your sata drive is only drive attached to sata Primary channel, it looks like it is just running on Multi-word DMA instead of Ultra DMA 5.

So do one thing Right click the sata primary ide contrller and Uninstall it and reboot, now check if the DMA mode has changed to Ultra DMA 5.

This should solve your problem, if not then -

2. Can you post screenies of all the 4 channels, or atleast the details of the no of drives you have and the channel they are attached to.

The uninstall/reboot did not work,..

I checked now and saw them reversed (didn't know that):

Iam only having The W.D caviar SE 200GB (First Generation) on the Secondry SATA channel... (Running DMA Mode 5)

And A Creative PC-DVD 6x on the on the Primary IDE channel with Multi-Word DMA Mode 2...

So i was confused and posted the speed of the wrong device!

Should the problem be that the drive is on the secondry SATA ?

Usually rule of the thumb is keep hard disk and optical drives on separate channels & thats what you have done. Dont think having the HDD on primary channel and ODD on secondary would effect performance.

If you want change them and see put HDD on primary and ODD on secondary.

As is said in post #12, run a disk benchmark if you want, but now more and more i feel all is allright and the lag you saw for mp3 has a plausible explanation.

OK...

Now I changed the position of the H.D.D and The DVD. as follows:

Primary SATA.. > H.D.D

Primary Master IDE ...> DVD drive

Then I made a benchmark with the software mentioned here and here is the result file

Just saw your results, your drive is perfectly fine.

So the slowdown of during that mp3 thing can be explained by my post #12.

Any other slowdown can be due to anti-virus running etc etc their tons of reasons. Anyways do what i told in post #2 + scan your computer of virus + scan for trojans using antispyware + clear your temp folders + check your background processes + think about what have you installed lately + disable indexing service if you want + have enuf free disk space on primary partition.

Finally, it is not your hard disk, that is 100%. Your hard disk and its access rates are Fine :)

PS : You can compare results with HD's own database, just click graph data, first select your saved benchmark then compare it with any other sata drive. Your average read time of 49.8 MB/s is good.

Thanks man I apreaciate your help..

Anyway I have some issues to discuss here...
So I will be adding other threads...
So.. You will have no rest :p :D
