Slumdog did it !!! AR Rahman snatches 2 Oscars

i dont know abt u guys, but Rehman's acceptance speech was pathetic.

he seemed to be a bit too at ease and was way too casual.

I thought he prolly will make it up the second time he took the award, but he was disappointing again.

Seemed as if he knew hours before that he ll be there twice and hence no butterflies in belly syndrome (whatsoever).

All in all .. tasteless.

belch..!

Thx for the informative list, but its actually only eight oscars. I did think the three above would get it.

The rest seems bit odd, must have been a weak year (or was it sympathy) this time round, having not seen the competing movies as yet.

the indian media is going batshit insane right now, basking in reflected glory of the movie and it's quite embarrassing actually. the movie isn't indian... why can't they realize that. rehman also didn't deserve any awards for this movie but the man is a genius and i consider this as karma paying him back for all his great works. and to the person who said this movie won incidentally and wasn't made for oscars... don't kid yourself... this movie was designed and tailor made for the oscars. this sort of thing happens every year.

the movie isn't indian

Exactly.this movie sold the poverty of India to the viewers(ex-colonists) to see india as still a dirty shithole.sadistic pleasure.now "curry" people will be mocked as Hey curry ,didja eat shit out there in bumbayi? -typical expectations.

seriously ,if we made a movie on English as "the colonial thieves" about how they looted our Country(as in erstwhile Hindusthan) ,I am sure Not even a award ,but a BAN of such a movie will happen there.

this movie can be good if it was made pre-1985 .but that is JMO!.

Hey English man: We are Not what they have shown in that shitty movie. :x

Curry is almost the national dish in England or didn't you know :eek:hyeah:

Problem with ppl like you is to only concentrate on what the movie is about rather than how it is told ;)

WTF, Oscar people... what are they thinking?

It's just plain inglorious for such an award like Oscar to go to crap like Slumdog Millionaire and shi*ty Jai Ho. The choices demean the awards.

In any case, we should not worry too much about it. If the world has decided to lower their standards to accept our crap, that's their problem. And yes, that Rehman guy doesn't deserve it at all. He is hardly better than the music composer who is part of the band in my restaurant. It's just that he is friends with Hollywood people like Webber and due to that they are noticing him. Nobody cares for true talent nowadays.

Accepting the best director award, Mr. Boyle paid tribute to the people of Mumbai, who figured by the thousands in his film. “You dwarf even this guy,” he said, looking at his Oscar statuette.
But I hope Mumbai guys will see through the hypocrisy and don't be swayed by the kind words.

Yes, Slumdog has bagged oscars.

But thinkkkkk, what India and Indians have lost. IMAGE. yes IMAGE.

This movie depicts India and Indians in a worst taste. It is a deep conspiracy of westerners. West is jealous of emerging power of India and Indians. By Hard work India is trying to stand on its feet slowly, but that is not acceptable to westerners.

In a very subtle form they have tried to snub India and Indians.

Yes, problems are there in India and with Indians, we should solve them on our own, nobody outsider should try to make a fun of our poverty and backwardness.

How many westerns have shown India and Indians in good light ever? I am not sure of any instance.

We should appreciate and applaud the Oscars, but at the same time we all Indians / Third world Countries people should also understand the motive of westerners.

Before commenting on my message, please think coolly.

Indians should learn the poem of Tagore, "Where Head is held High...."

Not the movie where a dirt laden Indian boy is running on street.

Always remember "Image is everything"

Warm Regards

^^ no no brother you are wrong on Tagore account. That poem is in English.

We should find our own anthem, our own inspiration in Hindi

And yes you are right on one account: Image is everything. But these damn artists and NGO wallahs won't understand. They always come out and trash our 'manufactured image' by talking of real. They talk as if the whole word is white as Milk.

If our IMAGE, as you put it, is so fragile that it can be affected by a mere movie one would conclude that you are saying there was never much of an IMAGE to begin with ;)

Music & lyrics: Politicians hail Mozart of Madras

Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit granted entertainment tax exemption to the film saying it had "created history in the field of Indian cinema".

"This film has earned a special distinction by claiming eight Oscar awards in different categories and hence created history in the field of Indian cinema," Diskhit said in an official statement.

The Mumbai-based movie about the unlikely rise of an inconsequential Indian pauper to win India's most popular game show, won an even more remarkable victory when it swept eight Oscars, including the most coveted one of all for Best Picture of the year.

To put that achievement in perspective, the $14-million movie almost didn't get shown in the US, when its original distributor pulled out of the indie film market after deciding that there was no real chance for a film that was half in Hindi to succeed in the US.

Slumdog did what all great art aspires to: it communicated across boundaries of culture, geography, economy and language.

The movie has already earned close to $160 million at the global box office, and the Oscar win will surely boost its earning significantly.

The movie is about hope & dreams, both of which are in short supply in this current point in time.

It seems the wins are just a logical continuation of the movie's premise.

I feel great for those little kids, what a trip it must have been for them :)

I seriously think that something is wrong with Oscars this time. Another Indian film won in its category... and this one too is about poverty and social stigma  . I wait for the day when we can give Filmfare awards to Hollywood's sh*ty films
