I think for your usage, Galaxy Note should be considered... Definitely only if you can adjust to its size !!

Now let me list out what he will get.
1.Better camera with LED flash.
2 Front Camera
3.Better graphics comapred to 3GS (PwerVR 535 is outdated)
4.Smooth User Interface.
5.Standard Market place ( may not be great as iOS , but its ever growing)
6. The next big thing - WindowsPhone 8(apple will pull out support for 3GS after its next release, which is not the case with WP7)
7.Better proccy for upcoming games,better render speed, more RAM will help in browsing experience.(Which 3GS will fail for obvious reasons)
8Slighty bigger screen with better resolution compared to 3GS.
@OP If your budget permits get high end android, else WP7 is the way to go.
Dump the idea of getting 3GS even if its available for 10k

According to me Note is best if you have the money, else SGS2, after that Lumia/Omnia.
But no doubt if you just have 10k, doesn't get much better than a used 3GS as long as its very well maintained.
But according to your requirements, the bigger the screen the better.
As for people posting about 3GS, I have nothing against the phone, I used to own it, but it is selling like hotcakes only in places where the carrier is giving it for free with a plan.
The phones above 3GS are not that expensive and are a lot better overall, Screen, UI, the lot, except app store.
Please post the budget man. People will stop fighting until then.

1) Nokia is known for good cameras and I think the Lumia series is no exception.
2) No front cam in Lumia 710.
8) Resolution difference is visible immediately. Pixel density is less in the 3gs.
All said and done, I think 3gs was the perfect smartphone for its time. It just makes more sense to get a newer model for the sole reasons of continuous upgrades (firmware/software) and future-proofing.
OP, go to a croma or similar store and play around with all the mobile platforms (android, ios, win 7, BB, symbian etc..). If this is going to be your first smartphone, do not invest in a really expensive one. Pay attention to the form factor, battery-life, ease-of-use and such things. Specs come second to personal satisfaction.

I've been using a medieval nokia/sony...and i'm not an app junkie so this marketplace or app mania , is not going to affect me, neither is non support from the manufacturers. only thing i'm worried about is build quality and hardware ****ups.
