PC Peripherals SMPS power consumption ! 500w vs 350w

Hi,

I have a few doubts with regard to some office systems I plan to purchase in the immediate future.

1) Should I stick to the I-Ball cabinet and the SMPS (400w) which comes with it ?. It is an AMD configuration with

x2 240

Gigabyte 785GMT-UD2H

2 gb ddr3 1333

320gb HDD

19" Dell e1909w

keyboard and mouse

(No dvd drive or speakers)

A lot of people say the SMPS that comes with the cabinet (IBALL 6363) should do. kindly enlighten

Question 2). Earlier when I requested for the config for an office system, a lot of people in this forum came up with suggestions and in SMPS, a lot of them suggested Zebronics pro 350w. When I enquired for the same here in Cochin I figured out that the model that is available is Zebronics pro 500w. My Question is, will this 500w SMPS consume more power than the 350w one ? I do not think the above configuration would require huge SMPS power but I do not know how power in consumed in SMPS, is it based on the wattage it shows ? . Kindly let me know.

1. A generic iBall PSU might do since its a fairly light config, but to stay on the safer side - especially since these are office systems - get something better.

2. An SMPS is designed to draw only the amount of power needed and nothing more, regardless of what wattage its rated for. There are minor issues.. if an excessively high-wattage PSU is powering a low powered system, it won't be in its efficiency 'band' and you might lose out a tiny bit on efficiency.

Get one of the FSP units otherwise. The Pro 500 would also be more expensive than the Pro 350. Be careful you aren't being sold the Platinum 500.
 
Two things you should consider while utilizing power supply for office pc

i) The PSU should be reliable. You dont want restarts inbetween working hrs right.

ii) Should have high efficiency. The local PSU have 60-65% avg efficiency. Brands like corsair, seasonic, FSP has 80+% efficiency

If the power needed is 150w then a generic PSU takes 230-250w(60-65% efficeiency) whereas a good brand takes 190w. So the diff is 50w per hr.

Assuming you have 15PC's running 10 hrs a day for 250 days a year then the power saved is 1875000w-1875 units - Rs.7500-9375 a year(Assuming power costs 4-5rs. Guess it wil cost more in a business scenario.

Plus you get a 3-5 yrs warranty. Edit: The PSU's load handling degrades with time and those of generic ones only degrades faster.

I would suggest you go for Seasonic Bronze S12II 380Watt~2.9-3k / FSP Blue Storm Pro 350 Watts(80+ certified)~2.3k

Will cost you ~38-39k(seasonic)/28-29k(FSP blue storm) (Subtracting the cost of generic PSU assuming one costs rs.400) for 15 PC's. But 5 yrs down the line you will save more the initial cost plus no restarts bcoz of the PSU. :D
 
Higher efficiency PSU should be bought as they save power on a long run. Though config is very light and any generic PSU will handle the load.
 
Oops, my bad. Meant to write load handling but instead wrote efficiency as i was talking about that in the entire post :S
 
try to get Coolermaster Extreme Power Plus 350W. Will Cost you around 1.5k and is much better and reliable than the older Extreme Power Series !!

Back to the question, I have decided to only go for a branded PSU..is Zebronics Pro 500w good ?. Karthi, I do not think Seasonic is easily available in Cochin. When I purchased my home PSU, I got the corsair sent across from bangalore. Cant do the same for office because of warrantly. office related issues.
 
Then you better go for the zebronics pro 350w. Every PSU has its highest efficieny in the 35%-75% consumption(load) band(120-260watts for a 350w PSU). In your case where expected consumption is ~140-180w it will be better you go for 350w SMPS. zebronics pro 350w(75-80% efficiency)~1.5-1.6k. Make sure its PRO and not the platinum series
 
I think Seasonic 380W is best when it comes to low end computing but @ 3+k it is still a brainer to buy for someone investing in multiple pcs for office usage. I would go with the FSP SAGA 350W i guess.. :p

Most local brands like Iball, mercury, intex, etc are available. Its not that none of the branded ones are available, its the delay for the dealers to get hold of them, because of the lack of demand they dont store the branded ones here. Are all local brands pathetic ?
 
For that setup FSP saga 350 and Zebronics pro 350 will do just fine.If both aren't available in your region then get it from TE dealers.
 
Check whether VIP/Powersafe 450W SMPS are available locally. They are one of the few reliable local PSU. Although personally I'd have preferred FSP Saga 350W for ~1.5k ( available at Amarbir's Lynx )
 
Hey, I managed to get ZEBRONICS PRO 350W for 1250/- bucks since I went for 10 numbers !. FSP and Seasonic would have taken 4 days since I needed 10. Cooler Master was also available, but I decided to stick to ZEBBIE based on popular advice here in this forum.

Thanks a ton for everyone who put in suggestions. I really appreciate it and I am glad I am part of this group.
