Yes, high auto fare (sometimes GTA kind too if your luck runs out -- holds true for everywhere though) based on few variables:
a) mood of the autowala (most of the time they will behave that the place doesn't exist)
b) weather (rainy / too hot / too cold)
c) time of the day (after 9 p.m. means 1.5 times of the meter, after 11 p.m. is twice the meter, etc)
d) your present location (how crowded or deserted it is / whether a mall / railway station, etc)
e) your destination (if it's a secluded place, then prepare to give at least 20-30 bucks extra)
f) ...you get the point I guess
 
I am mostly going to stay at a hotel near railway station and how far will the shopping complex be form there? I have heard Bangalore has good public transport like Buses, at least better than Pune. So how far is the shopping areas? We are like 8-10 people, so can beat the rickshaw guy if he robs us, but I think he maybe having backup plan too :P, only thing is the charge. @ayanavish I think it will be quite cold in the evening, so he will charge high, I am scared about the disco and pubs, returning from there at 12am-1am and no transport??

I didn't find anyone mentioning about the one-way traffics, which I felt Mumbai lacks in terms of Infrastructure planning.
I think Bangalore has better traffic management compared to Mumbai and Chennai.
+1 for the Bannerghatta national park safari. Lalbaug's 200 year old tree is a true wonder,very close to the Bull temple mentioned before in the thread.
If picnicking in Mysore, them Vrindavan garden is a must.
And yeah the Ricks charge like bomb shells.Would suggest you to ask the hotel to book one for you.
I still remember a 55 Rs. drive(was booked by the hotel) was charged 160 Rs. on return journey
 
Ya bangalore has a lots of roads with one way traffic but that is not mentioned because OP is not going to roam in his own vehicle..also dont take panga with autowallas baskets will call their frnds, they even have tieups with many traffic hawaldaars... about the hot crowd, go to UB city and keep ur mouth shut, no drooling...hehe :) but seriously, i suggest stay away from fantasy, just enjoy the weather, food, city as a whole... try to know/move around some nice places which you will remember, you know make it a short and sweet experience. hot chicks are more or less same everywhr(personal opinion), you know same old high heels and short dresses.

I can assure you that traffic management in both Kolkata and Chennai is much better than in Bangalore.

anyway @OP, to give you a clear idea - Auto should run using meter. Starts @ 20/- for 2 km and usually it is about 10/- per km. In good crowded area and markets, the autos generally agree to use the meter in normal time. But if its after 9.30/10pm or in a deserted place then you can forget about it. Still try to haggle though. Anyway, since you will be in large number, you can take call taxis - should be almost same fare as the autos without meter.

If you want to go drinking, I would suggest you to book a cab in advance, they would pick you up at the pub/disco and drop you at your hotel.

I suggest you visit Toit or The Biere Club, the beer is excellent at both these places as they brew their own.

Which railway station? Which shopping complex?

IMO, Bangalore is a safe city (at least safer than a lot of other cities in our country) so you can wander the city in an open mind. If you are in good number and ask autos to go by meter, you should be okay. Finding one, who is ready to transport, is the difficult part. Evenings are cold, but quite manageable. I don't remember wearing sweaters or heavy jackets here. If you are planning for late nights, then as @sabby said, hire taxis. They are better than autos.

Regarding traffic and public transport, again to me, Kolkata is much better. Can't compare to Pune but as you are traveling it's better to try all modes of transportation for experience.

Chennai as best ? You gotta be kidding me. Bad roads, very very bad weather, one rain & roads become swimming pool. You must visit Koyambedu & Omni bus stand in rain. I have my friends whose native is Chennai but never want to come back to this city.
 
I am glad I live in Chandigarh.
I am however seriously pissed off at the way people park their cars over here. Every parking place has neatly painted spaces to guide people on where to park their cars. But everyone just park their cars wherever they want. Sometimes I think we Indians dont deserve to have well planned cities because we have no sense of duty towards each other and just end up ruining the efforts.
 
Goto Mysore directly.
From there you can visit various places - like Coorg (hill station), Shivanasamundram (waterfall), Bandipur / Nagarhole National Forest, Belur-Halebidu-Shravanabelagola (temples) - all are within 100kms from Mysore.
Plus, you got to see Mysore too. I enjoyed the Chamundi Temple in the evenings and found Brindavan Garden is highly overrated.
(I had lived in Mysore for 3 years.)

So the only good thing is the weather ? I'm studying in Delhi currently.
 
Just got back from BLR on the 5th of Jan , was there from the 31st of Dec (official tour). Wrt hotels for business trips and frequent visits to electronics city I recommend the Keys hotel @ Singasandra on the Hosur road and for relaxed visits with awesome traditional cuisine I recommend Woody's Woodlands on Raja Ram Mohun Roy road (Richmond circle). Keys has rooms with AC and free breakfast+wifi(2 hours complementary) + a nice gym @ 1650 a night (a good business hotel). Woody's has rooms from 2500 with free breakfast(awesome food!)
Drinking/Pubbing :-
Peecos (Church street or MG road always get confused)
The Biere Club (Lavelle street)
The Toit
Hard Rock Cafe (if overpriced drinks and rock music are your thing)

Food:
Nisarga Garden (awesome south indian cuisine) (try their akki roti/raagi roti)
rest of the joints have been mentioned by the guys above
I might add Bisibelle baath with fried bacon is my absolute fav. combo! Curd rice is awesome as well with KFC! (i do have a weird taste!)

Shopping:-
Commercial Street / MG road / Brigade Road/ Marathahalli
SP road is over priced (I get better prices in Ahmedabad/Lamington road)
Blossom's MG road has an awesome collection of books (do go there and check the letter the owner's found written by R.Tagore)

The weather is awesome in bangalore. Bangalore is the best place in India to live and work in. It isn't as uptight and stuffed as Mumbai and neither is it all rude and obnoxious like Delhi. TBH anywhere's a paradise for me since I shifted to Ahmedabad. Thank your Mr.MK Gandhi, you've made my life more miserable!

Cons:-
Rickshawallas rarely go by the meter
Petrol is Rs.83 a litre.

Its a brilliant city and I can't wait to get back by the end of this month and head straight for the nearest watering hole considering I am based in Ahmedabad!
