I have several AVI(xvid) videos. I'd like to add some text titles in each video, trim some part of the video, insert intro clips without reencoding/rendering the whole video again. What software should I use. It should be simple to use and fast.

For very basic and easy work use windows movie maker - it is a part of XP etc

does virtualdub support in adding text to the video?

I have been using it for some time to simply edit videos but never found the option to add text,..have i missed it?

Its impossible to make such changes without re-encoding the whole thing. The best you can do without re-encoding is merge two IDENTICAL attribute videos together without any modifications.

On Windows the absolute best video editor is Adobe Premiere Pro, non-debatable. However it takes time to learn to even perform basic operations. For simpler stuff use VirtualDubMod.

Yes you will need to re-render it, if you are talking about subs check out the guide I put up using vdub in the guide section of TE. If you really mean adding text.... anything other than subs will require something like premiere or after effects or maybe you can find a canned product like Nero for this.

There are plugins for VDUB that allow you to do relatively complex modifications like overlaying images and fade effects and other stuff based on the timeline.
