Northstar
need a rig for downloading 24/7 with lan and torrent app support.

my place has a 9 hr powercut schedule everyday (every 3 hrs alternate till 9:30 pm):@

so require something that wants very little power to download and stay on for those 9 hrs everyday (on bck power ofcourse). was looking at pico power psu at micro-itx.com, but they are quite expensive. even the sff mobos are very expensive at abt 200 pounds. need an inexpensive local solution if possible.:)

im also interested in any responses coz i would like to do the same. failing which i'll just use my old 2002 model sony vaio laptop for this purpose but it has only a 30gb HDD so will need an external usb disk too :)

You should have a look at Intel D201GLY2, which is an ITX mobo with a Celeron 220 CPU soldered on. Greenhorn was the one who enlightened me about the board's existance

Intel® Desktop Board D201GLY2 / D201GLY2A Overview

The proc has been speculated to be based on a Core 2 Solo. Its runs @ 1.2 Ghz & is reported to be 64-bit capable

Power cosumption of board + cpu + a 6W HDD is ~28 Watts, and it compares very well to the VIA CPU, which is quite a feat

Mini-ITX Intel D201GLY Power Consumption

The drawbacks as I see it
  • Doesnt support SATA2 (Has 2 SATA1 ports)
  • SIS graphics chipset has bad support for Linux & alternative OS
I've seen people on forums claiming they could get 2D support in Linux after some work, but 3D support isnt available under Linux

Delta Peripherals, Chennai have the board listed for Rs 3,200

^ u have link to anything like that. pls link it to me. i have been looking for it for like ages.

+1. i'd like one of those if it can save to a hdd directly. @zhopudey r u talking of a NAS device by any chance?

Routers with in-built torrent clients:-

Asus WL-500g Premium: Newegg.com - ASUS WL-500G Premium IEEE 802.3/3u, IEEE 802.11b/g Wireless Router - Retail

Asus WL-700gE : Newegg.com - ASUS WL-700gE-250G IEEE 802.3, IEEE 802.11b/g Multifunctional Broadrange Wireless Router(250GB Hard Drive Pre-installed) - Retail

Review: Techgage - ASUS WL-700gE Wireless Router

The Asus WL-700 has an in-built hard disk, while on the WL-500 i'm guessing you'd need to attach an external USB drive to use that functionality.

Not sure if there are any other similar models.

get an Asus EeePC for 16k, and hook it up to a big external usb hdd for storage.

low power consumption, plus no need to worry abt power outages since it's battery will easily last 3hrs :)

only asus has bt downloading feature in its routers i think.
the 700ge looks promising, and has 160gb hdd with raw formatting :S (whats that?) very expensive :( though but could be worth it considering it can download with the comp turned off. might pay for itself in 2-3 yrs time i guess.

Burnz already posted it, and even I'm contemplating the same.

EEE PC + USB HDD, gives you all the functionality you need with hardly any power usage (Once the LCD is turned off).

The chotu laptop (EEE pc) + USB HDD makes a LOT of sense for all download rigs.

The backup battery for a laptop/EEE pc is much more ideal than a huge contraption for backup power + you get a neat LCD screen as well. :)

Nice option.

I checked and the reviews on the net arent too good. Every1 recommends flashing them with ThirdParty firmwares to get them workin properly but none of those firmwares have the bittorrent/downloading support. The cheapest bet still seems to be the celeron chip.

Too exp tho. U ll never save enuf power to make up for the huge amount u spend. Better to get the celeron integrated chip....theats the cheapest option IMO.

Makes sense only if you need an EEEPc too and use it for other purposes as well. Else getting an E for this is just a waste of cash :P

^^

intel DG101GCC.. or something like that.. superc had spoken abt using it in his low cost dl rig.. used soemthing else in the end coz this doenst have sata ports.

Thanks for the model stalker.

N correction: It doesnt have SATA2 ports :P It DOES have SATA ports :D And i think he wanted option to convert it into a HT later too ;)

FOr a download rig, doesnt make a difference whether its SATA 1 or 2 :P

^ Oh so its a CPU+Mobo combo not a standalone system. Hmm.. that means it still needs a cabby + PSU + Internal HDD + Monitor + Keyboard + Mouse ;)

My point is that the EEE is so compact, serves the purpose perfectly.

^ you dont need monitor, kb, mouse if its going to be a minimal d/l rig. you can always access it through the network from the main rig.

So the setup can be just a box with power + network cables connected.

EEE will be pretty compact solution, but I think the celeron setup works out cheaper.
