hey ppl,

i was planning on buying a 46 inch sony bravia lcd tv ( most probably from the grey market ). should i go for the X series or the Z series ? for X series the contrast ratio is 10 lakh :1 and for the Z series it is 80,000 :1. X also comes with a USB port.

firstly is it worth buying from the grey market ? I would like to know the difference too.

I also saw the new samsung 7 series LED tv which looks amazing and the technology is much advanced than sony. Am really confused now.

please suggest.

Thanks for your help in advance.

well the sony X and Z both achieve full 1080lines of motion resolution, the X series just is in a different league it has local dimming RGB led for that incredible contrast and it has far superior image processing with bravia pro engine compared to Z series which just as a normal CCFL backlight and bravia engine 2.

the samsung series 7 led lcd tv isn't superior to the X series technology, nor does it achieve full 1080lines of motion resolution that the above sony models are able to achieve.
the sony Z450A series will be replaced by the Z550A series which has the improved bravia engine 3,it is unclear when sony will launch the Z550A in india but i did see a AD http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xt4xTa5Uiiw&feature=channel in AXN about the new 200hz sony tv,but then again the ad was shown during the SONY style programme.
well about buying them in grey market its upto you there is no doubt u will be saving around 20k,u could also buy them in bangkok since the tvs are manufactured there and is priced very less for instance the sony Z series is a cool 80k cheaper in bangkok compared to indian official price.

What does "grey market" exactly mean? Does it refer to dealers who import the products from foreign market themselves and sell it without warranty. Does anyone know of such dealers in the Delhi/Gurgaon area?

I wont mind checking them out but perhaps in the end it may not be worth the risk.

Grey Market - Not buying it from Sony.

Like , if you're in Mumbai you may buy your television set from Alfa and it'll be at a good price. But incase if you buy the same set from Sony World or something it's going to cost you like 40-50% more , and that's where the grey market thing steps in. Alfa import's the set's from abroad on it's own and sells it for a good price , something like what kmd does. :)

So of course i'd prefer Alfa > Sony World.

@ Ankit , go with the X Series mate, you won't regret it. Gem of a Panel ! :D

gaffar market. we've boght a lot of sets from there. they are usually sealed packed tvs bought usually from thailand/dubai etc and brought to the country without paying duty, ie. they are bought as sets meant for personal use. when you pay up, they open the box, show you the piece and hook it up to show you that it works fine. you however will not get any warranty on the product.

Sony has already released the V550 series and 32 inch W550.So it won't be long before newer x series and z series come to india. So my suggestion wait.

well X550A series will take quite a long time around, since its not even registered yet in singapore safety consumer bla bla.but the Z550A is however registered so should be available around august

Anyway has anyone got any idea how V550 series compares to the older gen W450 series?
well the V550A has better upscaling and can show SD content better, but the W450A has the edge in motion resolutio,it also has a 10bit panel and a Wide color gamut backlight so the colors will look a bit deeper.

well the WE5 is the better one since it consumes lesser power and has better backlight.the price of the WE5 IMO will be around 1.25lakh.

well these new tvs do have a tech called DLNA network which allows u to play videos, music, images etc from ur computer,u will need to connect the tv via RJ45 cable to ur wifi router and then u can share and watch the videos from ur laptop, although i am not sure about HD videos,it can also directly acces RSS feeds ,directly from the net.it also has some widgets like onscreen caluclator, world time etc.u can also watch videos, images from usb drive although they can only play mpeg1 and mpeg2 formats.

Where is alfa .. is the irla one ??

can anyone give me the address, phone no. or any other details like if they have a website or something ?

Samsung is technologicaly no match to Sony.

Just yesterday I was at a Sony Convention and found out about how competitors (primarily Samsung) can be completely unscrupulous and untruthful as far as their facts are concerned.

Sony will no longer be playing the conrast ratio number game. Apparently there is no industry standard certification or methodolody to gauge contrast ratios. The numbers that you see... are just mindless numbers. All it is, is a sales gimmick. Sales teams are given complete discretion over touting any numbers as far as contrast rations are concerned. If their primary competition says 50000:1, the next day they will say their product has 75000:1. It's crazy. They actually had slides and real pictures of one model of LCD from samsung showing 2 different contrast ratios.

Also very recently you must've seen the release of Samsung's World's Slimmest LED TV. As misleading as it is, their TV is nothing more than an LCD with Edge LED lighting. The panel itself isn't LED based like OLED.

Also they claim it to be the slimmest TV in the world @ 29.9 mm. Sony unveiled their ZX series yesterday which is ONLY 9.9mm!!! Where is the comparision? You guys have to see it to believe it.

It's wireless too. With the exception of the power cord, none of the other cables go into the TV. It has a seperate DVD Player sized box, which will take in all the inputs and beam it wirelessly to the TV. It's phenomenal.

The best part is the price... it will be available in stores in June and the 40" model is priced at just under 2 lakhs.

I was very impressed with Sony yesterday... there is a reason they are number 1 and the most trusted brand. They don't BS like everybody else and are the yardstick by which everybody else is measured.

well the X550A should be availble around oct/nov,the Z550A series should be available in august they both have the improved BE3 engine while the X will have a even more advanced image processing, they both will have new panels with higher contrast.
but b/w the existing models the X series is clearly better.

From Andheri, you can take any bus going towards Vile Parle, get down at Irla Bus Stop, take a right into the lane, and there are around 3 or 4 Alfa shops on the right side of the road, just ask for the one selling Electronic goods. You can get the contact details from any online help site like JustDial.

For grey market goods, they don't provide any warranty, no bill, and payment has to be in cash. You can't review the product for long, they will give you a very brief demo, so do your research and then go to Alfa.

I got my Pioneer 610 DVD player from Alfa, and am totally satisfied with the same.

I visited Gaffar market in Delhi yesterday to get a feel of the place and was surprised to find the 40" Z450A available for 95K compared to the 150K from Sony authorised dealers. Now the worrying factor is how much reliable the product is especially when it comes with "No Warranty" coverage. And I believe there is no way of know if something was tampered with as the so called sealed boxes might be re-sealed ones.

I think its just a matter of deciding whether to play safe or take the risk to save approx 60K.

Does anyone have experiences with Gaffar market? Perhaps point me to a dealer whom one would have safely traded with.

Also another question thats been disturbing me is whether Sony service center would accept gray market TV's for any repairs at the owners cost?

Please let me know...

sony will repair then even thought its bought from the grey market but to be safe just tell them it was bought localy.
well there is a difference b/w the factory sealed and re-sealed ones,so u can spot it.well 60k difference is a lo,so i think it is worth the risk.just make sure u don't get a set with bad pixels and backlight bleed.

Thanks Adder for your prompt response. Whats the rule of thumb to test dead pixels and backlight bleed when the guy runs the demo?
