Sony w70
After a day's delay to publish 2 more reviews (I was tired and I didn’t have the energy to finalize the opinion about these products.) I wanted to publish about w610i but I just hit a bump on the road. Sadly!! WHY ME!!!!
AHEM
Ladies and gentlemen-the Sony w70.
[BREAK=Writer's personal notes]
Writer’s personal notes:
Whenever I write an article, I try to make sure that it doesn’t reflect anything against any other product (except cellphones) and from other companies like Samsung, cannon, etc. From a writer and user’s point of view, I say its user’s preference. True-there are times that all companies have some con or the other-the interface, the LCD quality, the red eye, the goodies in the package, etc. That’s what separates one product from the other. So whenever someone reads my article, I try to make opinions based on a first time user and at a same time try to give more professional insight.
Since this is the first time I am writing a camera’s review, DON’T BE HARD ON ME T_T
Article for a total dedicated camera, I won’t know certain details-like the functions of an ISO. M
What you should expect in my reviews:
My goal to write reviews is for general public, just like other reviews-amateur or professional.
# The basic specifications (Sometimes I won’t write sometimes I will)
# The feel and presence of a product at hand
# Quality, built, estimated life and my expectations of the product physically.
# Power drainage
What you cannot expect in my reviews:
# The total detailed package to the core (I found writing a review for a dedicated camera to be difficult)
# ISO (I didn’t exactly understand the funda of ISO)
The reason why I am writing is because I love writing and my ultimate goal is to be in a publishing business and I hope to do so by first being a reviewer. Before I write any review, I do refer to multiple opinions on the official and unofficial product forum-user’s point of view does matter and their experience should reflect on my article to help people here get the idea. Even though I do research on other writer’s reviews, I do not use them since I have a tendency to write it in a different way. The materials I use for research is via Google or from magazines from my store. When I research, I look for cons rather then pros. When I first highlight the cons roughly, it becomes easier for me to highlight the pros. However, I wont and will never use other reviewer’s article for sake of getting reputation or a bragging right, as I would expect the same-especially from Guests. Just like many companies feel about their product, I too, follow my own principles and ethics. I am an amateur writer-but a damn good one.
The reason I picked a Sony!!
This piece which I have is a year and a half old and it’s a grey market piece. Normally I wouldn’t buy a grey market piece and probably never would. But I am evolving from a 24 year old Minolta bulky black camera from Singapore to a dedicated digital camera. So I needed a great one and the budget was 13grands with the memory card. I bought this piece at Circuit city, Bandra west (next to amarsons) and their grey market items seems to look better (the piece looked brand new with plastic stuck on it compared to the dull w70 at Alfa) physically. Besides they were the same owners of sayonara and our shops are next to each other. This was where I bought my nokia’s 6600 (the last nokia’s phone I ever used) when it barely launched (no ads) and got it for 21 grands which after a week became 25 grands. Now whenever I go to Vijay sales or Sony mony-I see them desperately selling w50. When there was an official Sony showroom at bandra directly opposite to circuit city (this was 6 months ago, now the official showroom is closed), I asked about the price of w70. They never heard of the model and confidently said in a salesman’s tone of voice “no sir in general some of the cameras are not imported hereâ€. Then I showed them-they were shocked as hell. The reason I am putting these stories is that distributors and sellers should stop under-estimating customer’s knowledge of products. When I asked one of the friends who knows the main distributors for shops like prime ABGB, he said it is available with official bill since a year (forgot to ask the price).
So word of advice to you guys, buying a camera is good-but lots of research needs to be done-there is more to it then loads of short forms next to camera’s brochure. Dumb salesmen would keep on saying for better picture quality and detailing-that’s why God made a site called Designer Previews . I know a customer back in the days when I was in the family business who works for GE electronics as some manager since she has a sixth sigma black belt and she has these comes with those big bazooka lens and buys tones of Mac magazine with t3, what mobile, audiophile, what hi-fi, etc like dal channa, I asked her how does she make up her mind-she told to first read the reviews and customer’s feedback (she told me about this site), see if it fits your budget and go check the camera for yourself-she shops in U.S. for electronic gadgets and doesn’t buy it in India-even for repairs she doesn’t trust the sony guys here :cool2:
Research on cameras is worth it. Ask opinions and do research on your own. I did research on w70 and the only con was that macro was not upto the mark, other then that it was good. Most of the guys did say that and I checked the macro mode. I didn’t see that much “blurriness†that I should reject this camera. Since I am Sony freak, I didn’t want to see other cameras even though I have to admit Canon counterparts are great cameras. I chose w70 and not w70 because the extra .5 inch made a difference on the LCD.

Okay now since this is the grey market piece, I didn’t get the piece exactly how it should be in an official package. I got the charger-but not the dc charger, but the one where you have to remove the battery and put it in the dock charger. I am not sure whether you do get a DC adapter charger for this or not. I got the usb cable and the hand string. I have to tell you that I have taken the pictures with the bad resolution camera-since that’s what I had when I was taking pictures of this camera. The package of grey market items vary from place to place-and some don’t even give the Thermocol since “a guy†brings it from somewhere else and gives a fresh piece if the customer is genuine.

[BREAK=The looks and other stories]
The looks:
This camera infamously claims to be the new generation for w55. This camera might look like a standard sized camera for many but this packs a great punch for your picture. The main eye-catching part is the LCD screen in the size of 2.5 inch. A 0.5 inch increase in the LCD panel compared to w55 does really shine out and manages to show a great detail. Still Sony managed to stuff in the “good†stuff on the side of the screen.
The buttons are well-placed out and it looks very simple to use, even for first timers. First is the good old friend in Sony’s side, 8 presets (excluding the movie preset) on the very strong jog dial. Below the job dial, there’s a Button to switch to optical view in a press of a button. A menu button and then a very useful multifunction/direction buttons which have four useful requirements to quench the thirst of a basic user- timer, brightness level, auto flash and timer. Then below safely tucked in is the delete button. Next to the optical view, you see the picture, movie button where you can press and look at your photographs.
Many products come up with one touch button and all that, but thankfully Sony didn’t enter that bandwagon. They put the firm push button for a reason so that none of the settings change which could create conflicts while taking pictures. Buttons are sized keeping priority and usefulness in mind. The thumb grip though doesn’t look much of a thumb grip, will be useful for a first time user. For people who are thinking that eventually I will call this camera a good one for a first time or “aank bandh karke†crowd-you got that right.

[BREAK=The Presets]
The presets:
To show the quality of the presets-I have taken several pictures of an object.
Object: Artificial wooden flooring
Reason: Artificial wooden flooring has lots of textures and invisible grooves.
This would help to get a better idea of the camera’s presets.
NOTE: <Within these brackets below every photo is the explanation given by the camera on-screen>
Auto Adjustment <for shooting with automatic settings> (on VGA mode)
With macro (0 brightness)
Program auto <auto exposure with adjustable settings> (vga)
With Macro (0 brightness)
ISO <shoot without flash in low-light reducing blur> (VGA mode) (ISO set to 1000)
With Macro (ISO set on 1000 max 0 brightness)
Twilight <shoot low-light scene without flash> (vga)
Macro (0 brightness)
Landscape <shoot landscape with distant focus>
Twilight Portrait <shoot low-light scene with flash> (vga)
Macro (0 brightness)
I wanted to post about soft snap, but the reason I did not was because even though I did take a pic with an object infront, it didnt look good. Infact it was blurred out. I am dissapointed with soft snap.
[BREAK=The Magic of Flash: Flash Gordon]
The magic of flash:
Out of all the pictures-twilight and program auto stands out. However, other settings seem to be radically off track with they mean. Soft snap cannot be said much since it concentrates on the subject and leave the background shallow-which it did. Twilight portrait looks great but if it’s a reflecting surface, not a good preset to use. In order to show the true potential of portrait highlight, I have taken a picture with twilight and twilight portrait:
Twilight (without flash)
Twilight portrait (with flash)
The twilight portrait truly shines for indoors/shady areas. To experiment with-I brought a preset contender-the program auto:
It did the best it could without flash, but to some this will be good depending on what Kind of look they are aiming at.
Flash on night:
YES!!!! I waited till it was pitch black. The time was 12: 45 AM. Time to see the power of flash and to see if the job is done
AND ITS AMAZING!!! It more looks like 12:45 PM :hap2:
Operation flash on night is awesome :clap:
USB Cable:
Now I know that I couldn’t talk about the dc charger, since I don’t have it handy now. But what I found out as a serious con is the usb cable. The main reason why I am going to highlight is because when you plug in an mp3 player, usb AA size battery (yes you do get aa size battery which charges on usb) and also cameras, not only they transfer data but also charges the battery But not this one. To my disappointment, this cable infact leeches on the battery power rather then leeching on the computer’s power. And this drinks a lot of power. Leave it or 10-15 minutes and it does leeches out atleast a 1/4th from this camera. This is a great disappointment, even though there is a separate dc connector, Sony should have thought about it greatly. This gets a bad remark on the scores. I wish Sony starts giving out power/usb docks for charging in mobile AND camera. Another sad part is that the usb connector is on the bottom. They could have kept a fast port or something like that. Further more, I think it’s about time that all cameras should get lids to cover these connectors when not in use.
[BREAK=Conclusions]
Conclusions:
At the end of the day, it’s about the camera and the performance alongwith ease of use. But sometimes in life, when we buy something, we wished we need something more. I really wish digital cameras have Bluetooth on it. Not just on high end-if there are any, but also on models which retails for 10 grands. Then I wish they put a bigger memory on the camera. 58 MB is good for this camera, but we always want more, we aren’t exactly the ‘santoosht’ crowd, we are the other guys. So at the end of the day this model should satisfy a casual user. But does it satisfy me?
Looking out for picture quality, I love it. Some pictures are from cheap ass camera I got. Some pictures which I taken for preset comparison are blurry. Might be that the point of photo click, my hands were bit shaky. But if you loved the pictures I taken to publish other reviews, then this is the camera-and I loved it. I know it’s not as slim as other T class models that Sony has, but this camera is almost 2 years old. And it’s kicking ass.
But other stuff matters a lot. Power drainage is a serious issue, and a dust guard each connectors is a norm. I love the firm strong buttons and I am glad Sony didn’t follow “one touch†bandwagon. However I wish there was some sort of a manual preset adjuster for people who want to experiment. When I was writing this article, I wasn’t concentrating on macro mode though it was on, but now after taking so many photos in a row, I wish they improved Macro mode and had image stabilization. Mic is good during recording but the speakers are SAD and the size it can take is 160, 640 (standard and fine). The image sizes which you can take are 16:9, vga, 2mega pixels (4x6†print), 3mega pixels (5x7â€) print, 5 mega pixels (a4 size), 3:2 and a massive 7 mega pixel (a3 size pictures).
Sony was kind enough to give a hand string, but I wish they given a good camera pouch and a lint free cloth too. I doubt if they are giving on new models, but if they are, then well and good. Optical zoom works its charm, but digital zoom literally get a serious low blow….literally. Even under adequate lightning, it gives a bad impression on the photo. Still for a small time time-pass photographer, this is a treat.
For quality and ease of use, it does get 4 out of 5. LCD gets an amazing 4 out 5. Under normal conditions, for overall I would estimate the rating to be out of 5, but due to so many important good and bad points, it made it difficult for me to give out marks. So I decided it gets a 3 out of 5 and it’s a good for average users and for those who wants a fun camera. The battery is recharged to full under 3 ½ hours. My fishes starfire and moonrock(he died 2 months ago sadly) do love being taken pictures !!!
