I am on a lookout for a high end phone which will be a complete package.(mainly for browsing, games, office docs, videos and camera)

Flipkart is showing similar prices for Xperia Neo and samsung galaxy S. Galaxy S no doubt is one of the best mobiles available today.

But looking at the specs of Xperia Neo, barring slightly smaller screen(3.7 vs 4) it seem to excel in every other department, Especially on the camera/video department. Also it has HDMI o/p and the 2.3 OS.

What does TE recommend ?

I recommend Neo over GS only because of a glaring omission in the GS which I find unacceptable in a such high-end phone - Flash for camera.
And i guess because of this omission, Sony has the luxury of pricing the phone at 25K which otherwise should have been in 20K range as many people debate. I am not sure service backup of SE compared to that of samsung(atleast in bangalore i hope its good)

I have find the Samsung I9000 pretty much perfect. Though I haven't used the SE. I would say if music is a priority or if flash/camera is a priority, go for sony. otherwise go for samsung it has more ram, a faster gpu i guess, i guess more internal memory, and too can be upgraded to gingerbread 2.4 afaik!

The difference between 3.7 and 4 inches is not at all negligible. If you are so concerned about flash, buy a cheap digicam. The camera in SGS is decent enough for a mobile phone.

Err not exactly. The Neo has HDMI out, comparable screen(check various reviews which term the bravia screen as excellent), latest version of android, better camera, notification light(i know it doesnt sound much to many, but i personally cant live without one),"same amount of ram" and most importantly, it doesnt use the stupid RFS filesystem thus making it usable out of the box. Ask a few GS users who have in hand experience of stock firmware and how pathetically laggy it is. SEs software is also better than the GS. Also with the Neo, you would get an upgrade to the latter versions making it more future proof. The X10 itself gets upgrades from 2.1 to 2.3 so you can guess. And need I mention it has an unlocked bootloader and has already announced support from modaco and soon cynogen?

The X10 has had two major upgrades. 1.6-2.1-2.3. I dont see why the Neo wont have at least two upgrades given that SE have already announced that the Arc is getting Honeycomb(or the corresponding mobile version). The GS isnt getting anything more than the 2.3. If you have to get a phone and you are not into modding and applying lagfixes every now and then, bunk Samsung. The Incredible S,Arc are better options and the screens in both arent pentile either. Also, with SE you are guaranteed affiliation to the Sony PS Suite and whole plethora of games compared to its Samsung counterpart.

till now the amount of RAM in Neo is not clear or perfectly confirmed.
the unit given for preview to gsmarena had 380MB ram. so please wait till it launches and users or SE confirm the RAM.

GS will get an upgrade to 2.4. Perhaps NEO too will. And neither of these two will be officially upgraded to 3.0. So please talk only when you know!

gingerbread is 2.3. so please filter your BS.

All things considered. Neo is the one to buy. Quite simply because,

a) Samsung Galaxy S is soo 2010, which means while it definitely will move up to android gingerbread, it'd mostly just stay put there.

While the Neo is the newer generation 2011 phone..which means while it will START at gingerbread, it would be good for atleast another two generations of android updates or even more perhaps, considering x10 moved up from Android 1.6 to 2.3, thats four generations of upgrades!

And yes, that Adreno 205 IS just AS good AS the SGX540 if not better..while the Neo also uses the new gen Scorpion 8255 1GHZ and both have 512mb RAM. Though, the GalaxyS actually uses much less of its 512mb ram.

b) Neo is a high-end SonyEricsson phone, which as history teaches us, will like all high-end SE phones will have brilliant sound quality and an amazing camera..especially with that Exmor R camera sensor thingy. And well there's not much to crib about the screen either..as the initial pre-production reviews for the Bravia powered LED backlit LCD are rather good (as found on xperia arc). YES..ofcouse it wont be as good as the S-AMOLED but the Bravia-ness of the Neo's LCD will ensure deep blacks and good color/contrast. And well, 3.7in vs 4.0in difference in screen is not really much...

Importantly, the camera is a 8mp exmor r sensor and it has a hdmi out and it has an LED indication light, which is inhumanly useful!

And if it is multimedia that you love, with the usual emailing and basic Officy document stuff but you're not much into the app store thingy,May i suggest an alternative,

You can get a Samsung Wave II S8530 (which is basically a galaxy s that swaps the awful plastic body for sweet metal body and Android for Bada. and Bada btw is rather good for smartphonyness ) for about 15.5k on ebay.in and well you can either save the 10k for your next dual core Motorola Atrix/HTC Pyramid/Galaxy S2. OR you can get an ipod touch 8gig for about 10k to fulfill you Apps thirst (and well as you know apple AppStore is just massive) :)

Cheers! Hope it helped.

p.s.: So as to not sound a PR man for SonyEricsson,a couple of facts,

i myself own a Samsung Wave S8500 with the glorious SAMOLED and i love it! (though i wanna swap it for an android soon, mostly Galaxy S2 :D ) and my younger bro has a Galaxy S...which makes me very jealous :P

2.4 is just a rumour don't get too excited buddy :ohyeah:

Sony Ericsson names Xperia Arc CPU, dubs Android 2.4 appearance a 'misconfiguration' -- Engadget

the next version is 3.1 Icecream which will take a considerable amount of time to come out and it will take more advantage of dual-core devices as honeycomb does not do much out of a dual-core cpu.

and btw the [ROM] link you quoted is nothing but the version number of the ROM itself (i.e., Ultimate Droid 2.4) that has gingerbread 2.3 and nothing related to 2.4

from what i heard, next version of android has requirement as a dual-core...

I think the Neo will be better.

1) It comes with 2.3,
2) better camera,
3) likely to have good sound quality (the sgs has excellent audio),
4) HDMI out,
5) Screen quality is good. (maybe not as good as samoled).
6) No lag :p
7) GPS will hopefully be without issues unlike sgs.

Since we don't officially know whether either phone will be getting icecream, no point in commenting about it. We'll have to depend on the mod community for that. And sgs support is not all that great. No stable 2.3 rom yet, despite all the hyped up similarities between SGS and Nexus-S :(

Samsung has confirmed 2.4 for sgs officially and they will skip 2.3 for galaxy, this is confirmed news. And either way xda will release custom 2.4 gingerbread for both. I recommend play for gaming tho
