SPDIF with multichannel audio setup

mods - please change title to SPDIF with multichannel audio setup.
tried google but not able to find exact information.

does anybody here used SPDIF with multichannel setup?
specially on vista ?

what are you trying to do?
have you connected your z5500 to the PC?
whats the sound card your using ?
oki from your config i see you have audigy 2 zs
creative supports only 5.1 dolby and dts passthrough i.e if your source is 5.1you will get 5.1 on your z5500
and all other audio is sent only in stereo mode

oki unless your onboard sound supports dolby digital live or dts connect you will only hear stereo (for games and two channel audio like mp3) .however when you play a dvd with 5.1 sound you will hear 5.1 audio on your z5500.

well mine supports DTS.... but still only stereo. quality of it is good however... i want multichannel.
and chaos what do u mean by - You need dolby digital/dts encoding for that to work. Your Audigy2 ZS doesn't support it.

encoding happens at z5500 level right ??

SPDIF is not a format, it's a pipe.

'Multichannel', stereo are formats.

Ordinary stereo sound is left and right. That is how all recordings are made.

Dolby Live/DTS:Neo etc are standards that allow one to convert stereo into multichannel, using frequency and time delay algorithms.

The receiver (in your case, the 5500) are supposed to decode the signal, and should support the standard. The trick is that it only need support Dolby or DTS, as the encoder (which is the soundcard, if it supports) will output a stream that looks like DTS or Dolby to the receiver.

If your soundcard or mobo does not support multichannel encoding, stereo will remain stereo (left and right) and multichannel sources (such as DVD) will come out in surround.

yes your on board sound card does suport dts connect .try to install the latest drivers for your sound card and see if you can enable the feature (dts connect)in application interface.

So which sound card to get, which can do real time dolby digital / DTS encoding...

I know Auzentech Xplosion can do this, but any other (cheaper :ohyeah:) alternatives?

try fiddling with the onboard soundcard software. There must be an option which allows to stream the stereo output into multichannel format.

Ok lets try again :)

Avi, when you say you're not getting multichannel, what are you playing? A DVD or an avi/mkv file which has 5.1ch audio? Are you getting this audio in stereo ?

i played Hostage DVD using power DVD 8 with SPDIF selected.
NO SPDIF connections -
if i choose 6 channel in normal mode get low sound but overall effects are good.
if i choose Dolby movie mode - good sound
if i choose Stereo x2 = powerful sound...

if i choose SPDIF = excellent sound but only 2 speakers in use... :(

your player needs to be configured to do a SPDIF pass-thru for DTS and Dolby Digital

your media player is currently using its internal filter to decode and downmix your DTS audio to 2 channel

i don't use powerlink so can't say where the exact settings are but i can give you screenshot from KMP to give you an idea if you have difficulty configuring it

Hmmm, just a thought...In KMP we can set, Speakers in Internal Audio Decoder as 3/2+SW; 5.1 Channels

and in the output tab select the output as SPDIF output after realtime AC3 Decoding.

Also disable creative's internal decoder to allow it the sound card to give to bitstream(digital) output...

It would do away the need for purchasing dedicated sound card which can do real time AC3 encoding atleast for movies/music with 2 channel audio...
