Speakers to please family

Hi guys!

Strange requirement here.

My folks aint no discerning audiophiles however i got a gamer and a gamedeveloper to please in my house.

For stereo i am already saving for Virenjis Lyrita EL34s and fostex studded speakers so music is not an issue here.

Prime requirement will be gaming and movies with some music listening, till i get my lyritas.

I am looking seriously at FX5051 as it looks to fit the bill.

Are there any other options that i shud consider in this price bracket (7 - 8K)?

Is it possible to hook my Xbox in 6ch inputs and pc though USB, and select sources on the fly?

Are there any first hand experiences with the fx5051 by gurus here like chaos, greenie, superczar and the likes?

Does the XBOX have analog outs for 6 channels? Don't think so. The FX5051 has only USB input no SPDIF. The only budget speaker with digital inputs is the Z5500.

I like your way of categorizing a budget speaker :)

Hehe what would mere mortals like us state when we want speakers in 2-3 k range.. ? :)

Hmm,

My bad, i thought if it could have a USB option whats the big deal throwing in a Toslink or a coax?

Other than that how would you rate the fx5051?

good to have you pitch in greenie.

No discerning audiophiles here and this is not for me either so can't spare an arm to pay for a jbl ;)

I'll get a decoder like the Creative one from a frnd abroad later. Right now lets focus on PC audio. How do u think the fx5051 will fair in this area?

its just 5k above the logitechs, maybe less ;)

Yup, if you dont want extreme [strike]bass[/strike] boom, then the FX5051 should be adequate :)

EDIT: you'll lose out on surround sound from the XBOX though

Thanks a lot greenie n chaos. One last question though, the place where i'll be placing these is about 10'x20'. And i won't be able to blast them off due to neighbour constraints, so will the 89watt be sufficient?

Heh don't bother about wattage. Even a well designed 3watt SET is enough to fill the room with efficient speakers. Since you've already been to viren's place, you'd know that numbers have nothing to do with how good a speaker sounds.

hehehe good one chaos, was that with reference to the EL34s from viren i m plannin to get?

3WPC will be good for the high sensitivity suff in excess of 90db like the ones from viren, however the 5051s sport a paltry 4ohm load for the sats n 8ohm for the sub, so i have no idea how much that 89 watt is gonna count upto

Pune is one amazing place for hardware.:@

One guy quotes me a platry 7k for the fx5051s i get all happy and coalesce ma folks to get those. When i actually go to purchase the thing another guy is at the counter tells me its 10.5 plus taxes. :O

I am still ok with the price however at that price u deserve an audition adn the guy plain and simple refuses.

How the hell are u supposed to buy a speaker in ecess of 10k without even an audition. Pissed off i scout another few shops with the moolah and ma folks in tow but to no avail.

Check out Croma and other big malls, maybe they can help you out.

:@ :@ My wife's freind in office has told her bout the Z-5500. Now all my folks want is those costly monsters since they also sport the digital i/ps.

I've never heard the Zs but have too much negative air in ma mind due to comments from greenie in particular bot the Zs lacking a tweeter.

Can some z-5500 owners in pune let me audition their setup?

Haha , Same thing has happened to me also lol.Had almost talked a friend into buying an MX5021 when another friend of his talked him into getting an Z2300 at the last minute. Quite frustrating it was. :frusty:

Either way, these are speakers to please your family, not you :P so if they still want it despite you recommending it , buy it , and make them regret it :devil2:

They do have lots of boom , or bass as they may perceive it , than anything else at its price point...

Good suggestion greenie, however i'll be the one bearing da brunt financially

So i must make sure, it gives the desired juice.

What would you say about getting an onkyo HTIB for 20K instead of these 18k monsters? Would the sound be any better/worse?

That is indeed a decent decision. I haven't heard the Onkyo HTIB but I doubt they'd go horribly wrong with it. Listen to it, if you like what you hear, then you know your 2k lighter!
