STAR WARS BATTLEFRONT II EXPLODED: FIRST OFFICIAL SCREENS

These are the screenshots you are looking for...

17:28 As promised, LucasArts has sent us the first batch of Star Wars Battlefront II screenshots pre-loaded onto an Astromech droid, accompanied by a holographic message telling us we were their only hope.

Okay, so it was just a top-secret email, but at least give us our dreams...

Anyway, as we reported earlier today Star Wars Battlefront IIis currently being shown for the first time at the Star Wars Celebration III nerdfest - sorry, conference - in Indianapolis. These are the first screens of the sequel to last year's warmly-received Xbox, PS2 and PC multiplayer third-person shooter to come out of the event, and they're looking pretty damn nice.

Developer Pandemic Studios has apparently taken a great deal of feedback from fans and critics of the original game to ensure Battlefront II is a far more satisfying experience.

The single-player mode in particular has been worked on. Players will embark on an epic storyline with every action apparently affecting the Star Wars universe in some way. All six Star Wars movies will be referenced, with the Death Star and Princess Leia's Blockade Runner standing out for us as killer new environments.

Space battles will be included for the first time and players will have the ability to hop between vehicular dogfights in the vacuum of space and on-foot combat within the interiors of huge capital ships. More players than before can play online simultaneously (24 on PS2, 32 on Xbox and 64 on PC) and content inspired by Episode III should keep the experience fresh.

These new screens show off all these features. We're especially loving the interior of the Death Star and the corridors of Leia's starship - it'll be just like playing a part in the movies!

Coolest of all, though, is the addition of Jedi powers. LucasArts is keeping the details extremely close to its chest but we can't imagine any better bragging rights than busting out The Force on a whole platoon of Imperial goons. Take that!

No doubt we'll get hands-on with Star Wars Battlefront II at next month's E3. Keep it here for the latest.
