PC Peripherals Strange Beep sound from Cabinet

Last 3-4 times I played NFS Carbon or PES6 ..after a certain time, a continuous beep starts coming from the cabinet. But it also randomly stops, even though I continue playing.

I cant figure out if its some kind of warning sound, fan sound or something else... I removed one of the cabinet fans thinking it might be that cheap fan but it wasnt that either.

I have a BIG 6600GT PCIe. It reaches 86-87 degrees on LOAD and 62 when Idle.

its a CONTINUOUS beep, which goes on for about 4-5 minutes, and randomly stops.

Last time I tried playing NFS, the beep started midway through the game, but the second it stopped.. NFS crashed, dont know if its a co-incidence or something to do with the 6600.

Im using a 500W power supply from MGE USA that came along with the cabinet.

Any ideas / suggestions ?

86-87 is way too high for a 6600gt man  , check if there is proper contact between the graphic card hsf and the core...else apply some as5 between the core & hsf, also ensure there is proper airflow in the cabinet...btw what are the cpu temp's ??

Binoy, applying AS5 should drop load temps to 70C - I don't think your card can take > 80C, which explains the game crashing to desktop.

Even , when i play FEAR on my 6600 Gt load temperature goes to around 87 , this card already has some AS5 applied on its core.., but the point is i neither get beeps nor the game crashes

lol what are u guys talking about. 80 deg is more than normal for a 6600gt.

90 is also fine.

@ rio - it is not possible to get 6600gt temps to 70deg load here in india with the stock cooler.

bittu, I did it for a friend - don't blindly dismiss statements because you haven't done or seen it. My 6800GT load temps are 70C even though core is clocked from 350 to 400MHz.

I will bet the game crashes will go away if that 6600GT runs < 80C.

I have the same GFX card and it has a BUZZER built on it for high temperature warning. Check if your card has one too - there is a jumper on the card to disable this buzzer.

My card idles around 53C - I use the freeware NVTempLogger to monitor the GFX cards temp via the systray.

the 6600gt has a buzzer on it..mine beeped a couple of times in the summer too...the temps were hitting 90C on load then.
After I cleaned the HS n F , the temps dropped deeply into the low 70s on load.

6600GT eeh ?? mine went as high as 95c ... infact it did hit 100c once .. but no crashes or any other stability issues .. but even then , its not a recommended temperature ... some proper cooling , specially airflow inside the case lowered the temps to under 80c ...

My older 6800GT (the one which died later) went up to 112 Deg while playing FEAR in summer. The game lived up to its name and created terror in my mind, but for the wrong reason. :P Now my 1900XT tears this game apart without sweating.

An occational 80 on a 6600/6800 might be tolerated, but if you are getting 80 most of the time while playing, then it would turn fatal for the card. Its time you applied some good thermal paste as Rio says. Better dont use the card for heavy gaming untill its done.

the beeping could also be due to the fact that the cpu is heating up ?? wt are the cpu temps ?

ok do one thing.......remove the cabinet covers.....use the temperature logger play the game and the check the temperature.......before doing this exercise check the temp during gaming keeping the cabinet covers on.....compare the temp before and after.....i guess u'll be able to corner the problem

i am not dismissing anything. i have owned a 6600gt for a long time. have played a lot on it with load around 85-90deg. i will buy u 10 beers if u get me temps of 70 load on a 6600gt in a normal cabinet (with 2 cheap fans that binoy is using), closed sidepanel without ac here in india.

what u fail to realise is that u are comparing a 6800gt heatsink to a 6600gt. a 6600gt has a small n tiny hs where as a 6800gt heatsink is a dual slot design.

temps of around 80deg to 90deg is very normal in gfx card, especially a 6600gt (load temps). they can take those kind of temps easily.

also u and eazy maybe right that the gpu has a alarm that is causing the beep. but my point is different. it is that the 6600gt can take 80- 90deg temps easily. i have used it at that temps for well over 6 months without any problems or beeps.

10 beers does sound good, but make 'em all fosters - don't like kingp1sser - but wish you were in Bangalore so I can prove it :D

Anyway, on topic, not sure what temperature your room is but I dropped the temps of this friend's XFX 6600GT to 70 load (running Quake 4). I checked with him now and he said it climbed up to 75-76C but he hasn't seen it go higher. He uses a cheap Frontech case with no intake, only exhaust - maybe Bangalore is simply cooler :)

I'm not saying you're wrong about the temperature this card can take, I know both 6600 and 6800 cards have high temp tolerance levels, but Binoy's issue is related to the high GPU temp... it's the best place to start troubleshooting the crashes. I'm not even referring to the beeps.

You had an XFX 6600GT, those were known to touch 80C.
My BFG idles at around 45C and ~68C under load in Ahmedabad summers without a/c. Used to be slightly lower too, but it's 2 years old now.

I keep my case open and clean regularly, that helps a bit...

The temps mentioned here , ie 87'C is not high for a 6600GT i would say.. My card used to run @ around 95'C on high load settings like AA and AF set on with but havent heard beeps or such.. Nway, check the cooling in ur cabinet and try reseating the heatsink and applying AS..

Mine rarely reaches 80'C now with those steps.. Hmm, nyhow maybe u should try checking if those temps reported are really confirming to the temps on ur card as if temp monitor is reporting wrong it could be a lot hotter then what shows on ur temp monitor software..

Guys, this is not a 6600GT temperature thread  Binoy/Gr1m needs help to resolve those game crashes... dude, see you on MSN.

Thanks for the suggestions everyone.

I dont have a "cheap" cabinet (if you see price-wise)
There is a fan in the front, and one on the side panel that came with the cabinet and one more on the rear (thats a cheap fan) as well, all cleaned regularly.. so they arent choked atm.

I've been using this card since a year and only NOW has this beeping started.

Im sure my proc temps are not the issue, I checked them.
Is there any program that monitors the GPU temp, atm i just checked it using the Nvidia drivers TEMPERATURE tab.

RiO, the beeping randomly stops even when I continue playing on and on, if the temps are what is causing the beep shouldnt it continue for the whole time that im playing ?

Ill try cleaning the stock fan.
I used to clean my earlier gfx cards regularly until one day the fan on the 9800pro just fell off while i was cleaning it. Since that I decided not to mess with these cards anymore.

Ive been rather unlucky with "cleaning" .. 2 of my earlier RAM chips fried taking along 2 ram slots on the mobo when I removed , cleaned and reattached them.

From what i've read on other sites, this 6600GT reaching temps over 88-90 degrees isn't much of an issue.

I still cant seem to figure out where EXACTLY the sound is coming from. I'll try to check if theres some jumper for beeps.

Thanks again.
