Hello,
I have 2 hard disks
Western Digital 160GB SATA
Samsung 40GB IDE

2 days back, both my hard disks started acting slowly, taking very long time to copy
HD Tach shown Burst Speed & Avg. Read speed of both hard disks as 3.3MB/s
i tried a desi formula ie. formatted both hard disks.

WD 160GB shows 201mb/s Burst speed and 64mb/s avg. read speed
But the problem is still there for 40GB HDD
sometimes WD 160GB hdd starts acting slowly & then come back to normal after PC restart
Anyone have idea what is the problem

^^ Enable DMA mode for IDE hdd...Its there in Device Manger settings

Also try to install IDE and chipset drivers from ur mobo CD.

I had a speed issue with my Seagate 320 GB 7200.10 HDD. It was also developing bad sectors rapidly. I purchased a new WD 500 GB and transferred all my data just before the Seagate drive died. Meanwhile I found the WD too was not fast enough. I then changed the Zebby PSU that came with the cabby. Like magic, my computer has started booting very fast now.

Moral - Check out your PSU. Which one are you using and what is your system config?

+1 to the PSU

Most probably due to dying 40Gb IDE

what other components attached to system including fans and through light on SMPS in use.

I have a Pentium 4 3.0Ghz CedarMill
jetway 945GC mobo
Some 400W PSU that came with cabinet

How old this 400PSU ? If more then two years then try detaching one of your hard disk and run data transfer test again.

This PSU is about 1year old.

im planning to buy Coolermaster Extreme power 390W for 1.7k

Will it run this config

Gigabyte GA-G31M-S2L

Intel E5200

Transcend DDR2 800 1x2GB

XFX 8600GT 256MB DDR3

Seagate 500GB 7200.10 SATA 2

Western Digital 160GB ( Current one)

UPDATE: My 160GB harddisk was showing speed of 3.3Mbps...i executed script which changes DMA Mode to PIO. 160GB is working back normal

But 40GB HDD is still showing 3.5mbps :(

I did a error check with HD Tune on both HDDs

Quick scan shows all green boxes.. means no bad sector ?

How much energy will this config consume:

Gigabyte GA-G31M-S2L

Intel E5200

Transcend DDR2 800 1x2GB

XFX 8600GT 256MB DDR3

Seagate 500GB 7200.10 SATA 2

Western Digital 160GB

Samsung 40GB IDE

LG DVDROM 16x
