I switched on my PC today and was surprised to hear a loud or rather easily audible weird sound coming form my cabinet.

Im really scared, I dont want my HDD to die - and I have no backup :(

What could this be? I recorded it and I;ve uploaded it, here-

http://rapidshare.com/files/447997004/021211-004121.WAV

I have two HDDs -

1. WD 640GB 7200RPM (20 months old; This is my primary boot drive)

2. Seagate Barracuda 1TB 7200RPM (3-4 months old; Data Storage drive)

This sound does not come after I have logged into windows, only whilst my PC is booting. I've also noticed some growling from the cabinet once in a while but not for very long periods.

Re: HELP! Strange noice coming from cabinet while booting

Check for physical problems like dust inside your cabinet otherwise iif it is a clicking noise from your HDD <like Krrr...krrr...klat> then I don't know what you should do, my Maxtor Diamond Plus HDD <IDE -- PATA drive, 6 yrs old> has a similar problem and it hasn't given up yet. Hope this helps.

Re: Strange noice coming from cabinet while booting

It sounds like a dis-balanced fan due to dust accumulation. All CPU fans start with full rpm but due to modern BIOS settings they reduce their rpm & hence lower noise. When dust accumulates & dis-balances the fan then its bound to make some noise. Open the case & clean the fan & see if that makes any difference. It would be good to keep it running after cleaning for some time to see the fan...

Sounds like a fan to me too, clean your computer and try to trace where the noise is coming from

I really am relieved that it doesn't sound like a HDD issue, btw when I turned on my PC an hour earlier from now there was no such sound coming, will clean any dust accumulation nevertheless.
BTW can cheap SATA cables have any effect on the reliability/life of a HDD? :ashamed:

yes of course... If you are using a cheap one, get it replaced. The ones which come with your motherboard are of good quality...

I also get loud noise while booting from my two very old PCs but this only happens in winters, sound goes away in summers.

The one that I got with my motherboard broke, so I bought them from somewhere fro around ~20 I think.

Can anyone give me a link to high quality SATA cables, I'd like to buy them online.

^.... Try to get some cables with locking mechanism. They are generally of better quality then those plain cables. Also these should be thicker...

My Sata port came off once with those

open up the cabinet, boot and try to pin point the source and accordingly shoot the trouble.
