When I was going to Lap a HS I checked the modding forums and found that most people were using around 1200 grit paper - they said too much of a shine is not a good thing for cooling. I found 1600 grit paper and used that on my Thermalright HS - the result is attached..... before lapping the finish on the base of the HS was quite dull.
EDIT: Forgot to mention ... all this hours of labour for lapping dropped CPU temp about 1 or 2 C ONLY !!

i read somewhere that the minute ridges and valleys existing under the base allow the thermal compound attain better contact between cpu hs and heatsink..as in that case it gets well spread and evenly distributed.
the other extreme case is a convex or concave base..where there is no contact at all..

so ur need to lap and its effect really depends on the initial condition of the hs base..

BTW have to send saihen a few DVDs as well Used teh paper on a head...600, then 1200, then 2500. Didn't sand too much, coz more metal removed, the worse...
