In that price range, HTC Legend hands down. I was skeptical until I bought one but it's a solid phone which should suit most requirements. I haven't come across any major flaws so far... only minor annoyances which I think I've mentioned in this thread - http://www.techenclave.com/mobile-phones/one-day-with-the-htc-legend-167956.html

Most of them were resolved with 3rd party applications though. I guess with Android, you should try to embrace the App market rather than avoiding 3rd party solutions like the plague. ( I used to do that with my Symbian phones)
