Is it meant to be a joke :bleh:

If you want the cheapest, then atom is the way to go. But if you are okay with spending a bit more, get a sempron LE with a el cheapo mobo. And yea 1 gb ram is absolutely essential. I guess the power consumption should be less than 50w for both setups.

P.S : I have a intel d201gly + 160gb hdd + 512 ram + adsl modem + wifi router - the total power consumption is always under 55w for the combo.

asus eee pc :ohyeah: the 700, can get for ~12K, includes everythign and is very low power consumption

y spend 12k when you can get a atom board for 3-4k, i guess atom will be best choice

Intel D945GCLF-ATOM(Board +CPU combo) --> 3800/-

1 GB Transcend DDR2 RAM --> 775/-

Western Digital 640GB HDD --> 3800/-

Samsung DVD-Writer --> 1100

Other misc things like cabinet, KVM switch etc --> 2000/-

Total: Rs.11475/-

The eee PC can be used as a regular laptop and you will save a lot of space by not having another cabinet in your house. Plus, the silence cannot be matched with a cheap desktop.

There are some advantages to having a laptop as a download m/c but there is the matter of added cost.

I'm sure you guys are aware of these things but I just wanted to state these points for better comparison :) .

very true. since the eee pc has wifi, just use a wifi router, turn the lappy on and throw it in a cupboard :P totally invisible and low power!

yes you can run a laptop 24/7. with low power consumption comes less heat :P so no issues too :lol:

^but batteries do tend to get heated up..

Am not sure how much heat is generated if run from the wall power..

But even my portable DVD player generates quite some heat if run for 2 hrs..

So long as its placed in a well ventilated place, you can just run it on AC power without any issues.

nope they dont. not with newer lappies. plus if you're soo concerned, i think you can start the eee pc on AC power and remove the battery ;) ( works on my normal lappy :P )

Been using my Dell Inspiron 700m (12 incher) for the past 4 years NON STOP as my download rig and sometimes for quick browsing for when I can't be bothered to go use the PC.

Haven't had any hiccups at all, though I'd guess the battery's about to say buh bye.

Of course it does help that I've undervolted it and force it to run at only 600 MHz, all using Notebook Hardware Control.

If you're worried about heat, get a small USB powered laptop cooler (pad).
