I need to buy a 750GB/1TB external HDD. I am aware that it will only be available in 3.5" size.
Requirements are as follows:

1. 750GB or 1TB in capacity
2. VFM
3. International Warranty preferred
4. Will be used later with some media player (WDTV types, but not WDTV) to play HD (and Non-HD) stuff.

How much does it cost and which one should i go for ?

Are 3.5" external HDDs bulky ?
I have never had an opportunity to have a physical feel of it so don't know and we do not get much idea looking at the Pics.

Try Western Digital

Model No. WDH1CS10000

Capacity : 1TB

will cost you around Rs 5,800/- plus it has three interfaces - USB 2.0, FireWire 400, eSATA

Or

Model No. WDH1U10000

Capacity - 1TB

will cost you around Rs 5,400/- but it only has USB 2.0 interface

will the other interfaces like Firewire and eSATA be of any help ?

If yes then where ?

Firewire is a high-speed data serial bus,Firewire 400 is much faster than USB 1.0 whereas Firewire 800 is faster than USB 2.0

You have ports on the back panel for Firewire

eSATA is faster than the USB port,I guess the most recent ASUS mobo's have a eSATA port on their back

So if you are transferring movies/games and such large stuff then it will be performed at 10x speed faster than the USB

^^ But they would be not of that use to me if i have a old machine and if my laptop does not have firewire / esata port right ?

Also do the media players (WDTV types and others) come with any of these apart from the USB port? I suppose no

Not really sure abt the media Players and yes, check availability of the port and then go for the drive

^^ whoa...its a 2.5" one i suppose... The last we had was 500GB and now we have a passport 1TB too

I think that would cost an arm and a leg :ohyeah:

Guys i have now decided that i have to go for a 1 TB external HDD. Now considering 2.5" are available since they would be exorbitantly priced, it is out of question. So now remains a 3.5" one. So which one should i go for. Again reiterating my requirements

1. Will be used mostly (in future) with a media player to play media content from it (upto 1080p)

2. Wont be carrying much

3. Need to be rugged

4. Hopefully lightweight

5. Preferably lightweight / non bulky adapter

6. Good warranty if possible (International preferred)

7. Only USB interface is fine as i dont have anything which has firewire or eSATA interface. I suppose USB would be just fine to play upto 1080p content on a media player, right?

8. Last but not the least VFM (read economical) :)

WD My Book 1TB would be just fine. Have been using it for a week now and have been more than satisfied with its performance. It's lighter than the 500GB Seagate external HDD I have and the power adaptor plug is also lightweight [Comes with 2 different types of plug also] Didn't check about warranty but I trust the brand. And it costed me around 5,400/- only.

^^ Is it the same one listed by YashBhatt

This-> Model No. WDH1U10000

Also i suppose it is the My Book Essential right ?

So seagate or WD which one i should go for ?

Do both have same warranty ?

Is there any possibility of International Warranty ?
