PC Peripherals Suggest a budget 5.1 system..

A good friend of mine wants to buy a surround system...basically she wants it for movies and games, but she doesnt want to spend more than 5k on the speakers..so what shud it be?
To make the task a bit easier, i've picked up three worthy contenders..but from here on, its a bit confusing...so need ur help..:p

1) Altec Lansing VS3251 - 25 watts sub, 9 watts/channel satellites.
2) Logitech X 530 - 25 watts sub, 45 watts satellites
3) Creative T6060 - 22 watts sub, 8 watts/channel (F+R), 18 watts center channel.

OF these, only the Altec has a IR remote and seems like a gr8 value for money system..I'm kind of tilting towards it, but it wud be gr8 if any of u who owns this system give ur inputs..:)

N though i have a vague idea about the prices, i wud appreciate it if ne1 gave me the exact prices of these 3 systems.

Logitech x530./.. I dont personally own one but hav had experience listenin to it n mite just fit ur friend's needs!!! Its a gr8 sub woofer btw... Good punch...

You also have to get a sound card if she is going to use them for playing games, sound blaster live 5.1 shld be around 1.7k.

dont know abt Altec Lansing VS3251 but got altec lansing 251 for a friend 1 month back for 3k. For games and movies they rock but not so great for music.

Sound card is not needed as her system has a 7.1 Realtek HD Audio onboard..(she recently bought a new E4300, msi 965p neo based system on my recommendation, lol..:p )

I heard the same about the 251, thts why was thinkin tht maybe VS3251 maybe slightly better...Btw, Altec has removed 251 from their site, is it still available?

Also any idea about the price of the VS3251?? On websites, its quoted as $55..so i guess, it shud be available for around 4k,rit??

You will need a sound card if she wants to play games with EAX support. :)

251 has been discontinued long time back, replaced model is 251i and perhaps this also has been discontinued, but can easily get them at local store.

Okay so if it has to be between AL 251i and Logi X530, which one is better?

Though both the subs are rated at 25 watts, the Logi x530 sub seems to have a smaller 5.25" driver...will it be able to deliver good bass? (ie. more of a thump, rather than booming)

Also, we just found this Artis S6600R..the spec sheet seems impressive..it has THX certification as well..though the power rating is given in PMPO, the digit website rates the sub as anywhr in between 100watts-135watts, and the satellites in between 35-40 watts per channel..we checked the theitwares price, n its 5.6K....

S6600r.jpg

The X530 is available for almost the same price, but this Artis seems massive as compared to the x530 and better VFM....

Checkout the Artis S6600R.. S6600 :: Artis computer speakers :: by Kunhar Peripherals Pvt Ltd

Is it worth goin for the Artis S6600R ??

i own a creative T6060 and it ROX maan !!

the logitech X-530 comes very close ....and that is your call (Logitech OR Creative)

no idea about the artis

But isnt the Logitech sub rated higher(25watts) than the Creative T6060(22 watts)..n the X530 satellites have more power as well...

U still think the T6060 is better than the X530? Have u compared the x530 with the t6060? :)

you mentioned a "she" somewhere up there, I know I am risking flame for this, but why not go to the Bose shop and check out their computer speakers, no subwoofer or anything, just two tiny (and I mean tiny) speakers, and they do sound great. I yet have to see /meet a member of the fairer sex who has not loved them.

Trust me, give it a shot, "she" will love you for it. :D

Addendum: Bose Companion 2 Series II Multimedia Powered Speakers - Computer Speaker Systems ok not so tiny

^ Well, this 'she' is a bit different..:p She wants a surround speaker system as she loves to watch movies n play quake, half life, cs n stuff..:O N she is not evn interested in 2.1 systems, let alone 2.0 systems...:p

hear it before you knock it,

I myself am not a fan of paying for brand, but bose has definitely got me hooked on their sound systems, and I have heard more then a few.

Their other series is much better, but even by bose standards, they are being a lil ridiculous on the pricing there.

Okay will let her kno about these speakers...but given the pricing(99$), i'm sure, it will not be less than 6k here in india(with the duties n all)...it'll be tough convincing her to buy a 6k 2.0 system...:p

Btw, hav u heard them? Do they sound good enuf to ditch a proper surround system for a 2.0 system? Askin this cos i'm a bit skeptical...i mean, bose or any other higher brand, the laws of physics remain the same...so a 2.0 system cannot provide a surround effect which is essential for gaming n movies..;)

I have heard them, they are 7.5 actually :D (which is ridiculous again in the face of $100)

But you dont have to convince any body anything .. its just an option - listen to it - if you feel you like it .. buy it. Be careful you don't fall for the 15k set, they are AWSOME.

Just one more advice, Those guys have some really well recorded stuff for demos, but prolly not what you normally listen to, so take your iPod or fav CD along with you, that is when you will be able to REALLY judge if that is what you want.

And a trip to the Bose shop is never wasted, they have positively drool maal there. If you are not careful, you will find yourself in an hour long presentation. :eek:hyeah:

edit: At the end of the demo, I was very close to forking over 250+K for the system - Thank god my wife was with me and not as insane :D . but ek din aaeyga .....

We've finally decided to get the Creative T6060 for Rs.4250...Hope its not a wrong decision...:p We'll most prolly pick it up today evening..so if u think, i'm missing any other better 5.1 system in this range, pls let me know b4 evening..:)

I have heard them, they are 7.5 actually

Lol..she refused to listen any further... Says its outrageous to spend 7.5k on 2 teeny weeny bookshelf type speakers..:p Actually she dont care about bose n stuff..she just wants a gaming speaker system..

U know, its tough to explain stuff to gals...:p

Yaar, just considered budget before suggesting, how can 6k speakers compare with 75k :)

I didn't check altec, logitech or boss, but last year while shopping for friend checked with Intex, F&D & Artis (S6600) and believe me Artis impressed me lot, I'm not hard music listener nor have good knowledge about punch, bass etc but feel good with Artis Sound. :)
