hey guys,

my friend got a PC and needs help deciding the graphic card ..

Proccy Amd Athlon X2 240
4gb ram
PSU that came with the case..i think Zebronics..

he would be gaming on a 19" monitor..resolution would be 1440 X 900
so suggest a graphic card for casual gaming..budget around 5k

i was thinking abt suggesting ati 5670
since he is not using a branded psu..so was worried suggesting them:S
can he get a graphic card now n later upgrade the psu?or a branded psu is a must??

nvidia GT250 or ati 4850 shud be sufficient at that resolution. do not go for a high-end card with that rig. it might occur in a bottle neck

And what about PSU?

Get Sapphire HD 4670 512 MB(4.5K)
and FSP Saga II 350 PSU or Zebronics pro 350 (both around 1.5k)
HD 4670 will run on that stock PSU but it is not advisable to do so.Better get new PSU as soon as possible.

would it be advisable to run 5670 on a normal psu? wanted to go with 5670 being dx11 and all.
Yes I think the 5670's power requirements are similar to those of the 4670 and it should have no problems in running on any ordinary PSU.But apart from that it is definitely overpriced at present because for nearly the same price you can get a GTS250 which is way ahead in terms of performance.Performance of 5670 is only slightly better than a 9600GT which costs about 1k less.Check out this page to get an excellent idea of its relative performance:

The DX11 support doesn't count for much because it is simply not fast enough to let you run games in DX11 mode with reasonable performance.

The price of 512MB GDDR5 Sapphire HD5670 has reduced slightly and is selling for ~Rs.5200 in the dealer's section.

The power consumption at full load is only 70-75w~ and doesnt need a separate PCI-E power connector.

With the PSU you have it is not advisable to get a card that needs a separate power connector. This is the fastest card till date that doesnt need a separate power connector

As ppl have mentioned the performance is similar to a 512MB 9800GT which is all that you will need for gaming at 1440*900. Just grab one :)

I would advise against running any modern day GPU's with the generic power supply, the absence of clean power may cause problems in the long run. Save up buy a good PSU first, and then buy a GPU. A Gigabyte 460 watts is a good start...
