I have sorted out the following sony handycam based on my budget. I would like to know which would be better among these.

MiniDVD Based
--------------
Sony DVD 608E
Sony DVD 708E
Sony DVD 808E
Sony DVD 908E

HDD based
----------
Sony DCR-SR42E
Sony DCR-SR62E
Sony DCR-SR82E

Kindly suggest me which to choose among these....thanking in advance :)

is there any difference between the recording resolution of all the above handycam or all are the same dvd res recorders??

whats the problem with dvd ones??? i thought they were much more reuable and better? hdd ones are too costly as of now for the features they offer

i agree in india, the hdd ones are exorbitantly priced ( probably cause of indian companies age old habit of skimming customers as far as possible) .. so tat leaves us between minidv an dvd.. id say go for minidv.. much better resolutions .. an a lot more value for money aswell.. an as for options in the minidv go for 96e.. its ta best in resolution of all the options u hav up here.. plus i saw it for 25k + 10% cash back (= rs 22.5 k net) on futurebazaar. so probably u could get it for 22-23 k in ta market.. nuthin beats ths at such prices!!

not getting from india so the prices are lower than indian market prices...i was assuming minidv were history as I can hardly see any models available, all are mostly mini dvd or hdd based.

MINIDV still in the game :D

DVD ones not preferred as much cos throughput/writing spped is lower than that of tape/HDDs. So quality or resolution will be lesser as lesser data can be stored (i am talkin /sec)

HDD ones if getting from abroad u can get good sony ones with 30Gb HDD for around 500$ from amazon including shipping.

I still recommend MINIDV. Lots of life left in it yet. Its not goin anywhere soon. ;) + cheaper + u can change the tape once its full, say on a trip or something. The HDD ur stuck with till u can empty it :P + MINIDV tapes are also better than getting DVDs.

hey buddy, since ur not gettin from india.. id suggest go hdd.. an since ur going for one id say get a high definition one..ud prob hav 2 shell out anythin from 800-1000 usd.. but trust me it will be worth it in the long run.. an anyways 1000 usd is 40k only thes days.. so its actually not tat much..

Sorry for hijacking the thread, but even I am planning to buy a Handycam this Thanksgiving... So if my budget is around $500, which handycam would be the best option? Even I prefer HD based ones, but for that price, can I get a good HD based handycam?

i doubt ul be able to get a hd based camcorder for 500$.. seems tough unless u find a mindblowing deal on black friday.. hehe.. but then sony products normally do not have much of discounting.. so dont expect miracles.. in $500 if u want better quality go for dv96 (mini dv based, not hd) or if u want hdd based look for pricing of sr42,62,82 and which ever u get under $500 opt for tat..

i would suggest a handy cam with mini cassete coz i have dvd and mini dv cams ,with mivi dvd here are the issues

1) the dvd's are damn expensive roughly abt 250 Rs/- cant be reused if its a dvd RW it cost 600Rs/-

2) video clarity is bad compared to mini dv cassete

3) A mini DV casseste costs 120 Rs/- can be reused n no of times
I personally prefer a mini DV as the calrity is toooo goood
DVD clarity sucks and the size of the video gets shrunked :@

I have dropped the idea of getting the handycam...thx for the suggestions :)

will wait for the technology to mature more and get a HD in some time ;)

Ok... I am buying an HDD based camcorder (Budget max $750). I had a question regarding High definition recorders... How many minutes of HD video with 5.1 channel sound can you fit into 1 DVD if you have a Sony HDR-SR5? Should I go for HD camcorders right now, or buy some other HDD based camcorder for now?
