Hi Guys
I am a Beginner to Linux and wanna learn Linux and Its commands etc in it..
I will be using it on my Dell XPS 15 with config as in my Sig
I tried Ubuntu 10.10 64-Bit,but I could not decrease brightness below 80% nor the brightness keys work.
I will be Installing it using Wubi or any alternative to it as Mint4Win etc. SO that i can uninstall it easily
Presently using Win 7 Pro 64-Bit
Req:
Long Battery Life
User Freindly UI etc.
As I am a Beginner, please suggest one which is less problematic

I have used Ubuntu 32-bit, on XPS, but didn't had any issues [Read Zero] :)

You might wanna try fresh install. If any problems occurs head to ubuntu forums.

I was using 64-Bit version.. Maybe thats the problem.. Will try 32-Bit..

Now tell me the best Linux Version.. I will be creating a seperate partition and do dual boot with Win 7 as primary OS

Ubuntu is best for learning and Macbuntu is for rest all eye candy. Trust me, you will love this !! Have used it on my lappie till I installed Mac.

well as for beginner linux mint . Well the brightness issue should be gone by the final built :) . MacUbuntu just looks good for few days try customizing keeps the desktop fresh IMO :) . But i use docky thats the main thing . And another thing Macubuntu has not launched for 11.04 so you will get the windows theme and docky working but rest animation you have to get it done yourself doesnt work on ubuntu 11.04. And another thing mac ubuntu works on mint too :)

Oops, I didn't considered the versions of Ubuntu and Macbuntu compatibility ! OP you need to check about it. Thing is even if the site mentions it is not compatible, sometimes it works ! [happened in my case]

Well, Mint is good too and best for beginners. But personally I like Ubuntu Forum and their support, so I suggest Ubuntu.

Macubuntu will work if you resort to classic gnome, however it won't work with Unity. Have tried it but it should work. Donno if the project is getting updated with newer gnome release or not !

Ok guys... 32 Bit... Now thinking between Ubuntu and Mint Linux..

Tell me whether to go for KDE or GNOME?

@avi I think you have an XPS 15 right. Did u install Mac in it?

If yes, How?

I am a linux guy. Used Linux for looong time. But had to switch Mac because of iOS Development. Yes, I started learning coding and apps for iPhone / iPad. [ Link ] Mac is really good :hap5: You can see some videos in Youtube, you will get an idea :)

Doest work on classic ubuntu if you upgrade from 10->11 and on fresh 11 installation it wont start up due to the version check . Anyway you can extract the files and put them manually and it works but few minimize and other animations i was not able to configure on compiz am a beginner too .. Well about forums I never got help from ubuntu forum , Mint only helped me twice rest of the times i connect to IRC and help is easily provided there . And anything that works on ubuntu during trouble shoot works on mint too :) . KDE if you want eye candy else GNOME + Macbuntu :D

avi i presume you are using hackintosh then?

nope, iBoot + custom kexts.

Try any distros, as you have i5, have you tried Hazards ? Create a new thread, or else we both will receive warnings for OT :bleh:

^^You Installed OSX on XPS 15?? Thats great... I will consider ubuntu/Red Hat/Mint Linux /OpenSUSE

But I also wanted to try OSX. so VMWare or as seperate OS?

Not VMWare, that's of no use :|

Installed on HDD. Right now I have OS X only, removed Windows completely

How did you Install.. I heard you get only 1024x768 res.. I have the Optimus one, i.e. i5.. So please tell me how to install it

^^ There's alot of Hacknitosh guide available all over the internet which can help you to install Mac in your lappie. Although tried by me and safe to use but they require extra cautions with your data as hacking something requires some violations and courage to withstand the loss ;). I hope you got that, but again if you require some more knowledge over that i can heartly help you regarding it as i am having MAC rite from my 5 years laptop to present one (dell,hp,asus).

@topic.. I think its always safe to bet on Ubuntu. Nothing can beat it when it comes to 'first time users' to linux. Enough said. :)
