Sorry, another digi cam suggestion thread, but got nowhere else to go except TE :( , will have to take the advice of the experts before making the decison :ohyeah:

Features I'm looking for

1. 8 MP +
2. Rechargeable Lithium Ion battery or equivalent :ohyeah:
3. Decent/good quality pics
4. Strong built quality
5. Budget 15-20k, willing to extend a little more if needed.

I was thinking about the Canon Powershot A630, but the battery thingy put me off, I can't afford to put in new cells everytime.

I am planning to buy it from US if price difference here is huge. So does digital camera come with international warranty? Is it advisable to get the camera from abroad ?

:sos:

If u want a small camera then SD600/700 or A530. Don't waste money on 630... there's hardly anything extra. Or if you wanna spend more then the S3 IS is a very good option. For cheap cams, nothing beats canon. Infact nothing beats canon top to bottom these days unless you photograph landscapes exclusively which is nikon's domain. If you want a camera that actually makes use of the 8MP resolution, then get a DSLR. There's no use of an 8mp camera that has a 1/1.8" or 1/2.5" sensor :P.

Edit: Forgot to mention... no camera has international warranty.

I forget..which is bigger. 1/1.8 or 1/2.5? Anyways...I'm also on the lookout for a good digicam. Had my heart set on a Canon A640 but Canon does not have 3:2 mode which is what I would like in case I decide to get 4X6 prints.

Anyways, I changed my mind and decided to go the sony way. Am currently interested in the W100 which is sony's top of the line w series product but horrendously priced at 25K (official). Waiting for prices to drop(really wish sony released the dsc-w7 officially. Would've purchased one then. The new W series are as big as a deck of playing cards and as thin. Problem is, there just isn't enough grip.)

I guess the official price will never drop much unless you take it from the grey.

I am pretty set for the Canon Powershot S3 IS :ohyeah:

The official price on the canon website is INR 27995.00 :(

Does anyone know the actual street price in Delhi ?

Any reliable vendors for canon, are the palika guys reliable ?

I had a quote for canon S3 IS with bill and warrenty for around 23K... I guess in grey you can get it for around 20K...

I will post back with details...

Edit: Just spotted this at J J mehta... Canon Powershot S3 IS Digital Camera - 6 Megapixel

I got the 23K price in Palika New Delhi about a week back... Weired that its bloddy expensive on J J Mehta

The price difference will be more. The main issue is finding a reliable dealer in the grey market. :(

I think the diffrence between the grey and bill prices are not big these days expect for nikon....except nikon every other brand price diffrence is very less so it is better to go for with bill .........

I would not suggest any of above cam without facility to connect external flash.

Check out Panasonic Lumix FZ-20, FZ-30 or FZ-50 with Leica lense and optical stabilization - there is nothing which touches these camera in midrange.

^^ The Canon S3 S1 seems to have got better review compared to panasonic.

Plus I don't have much use of an external flash.

I am planning to buy it by Jan end, so waiting for the prices to drop :ohyeah: :ohyeah:

No, thats not correct. Panasonic Lumix range is regarded much better than Canon's in all areas, take features, lense or stabilization, it simply amazing. I personally use Lumix as my travel cam whenever I do not want to take my other expensive cameras and lenses. Search few forums, dpreview etc and you will see echo of what I said.

However, camera is personal choice and if you like Canon, you should go with it. Your creativity will count more than any camera.

Planning to order the Canon Powershot S3 S1 from Amazon.com: Online Shopping for Electronics, Apparel, Computers, Books, DVDs & more and ship it to a person in US who is coming to India.

This is what I have selected

Amazon.com: Canon PowerShot Pro Series S3 IS 6MP with 12x Image Stabilized Zoom: 17th Street Photo

$354.89

Amazon.com: SanDisk SDSDH-1024-901 1 GB Ultra II Secure Digital Memory Card (Retail Package): Electronics

$36.98

Amazon.com: Sony BCG-34HE4 Super-Quick Worldwide Battery Charger with 4 AA NiMH Batteries: Electronics

$23.99

Total price inclusive shipping is coming to $440.97 = 19,468.8 INR

Is this a good deal or will it be better to buy it from grey here ?
