PC Peripherals Suggest a printer for home use

I would like to buy a printer for home use. The budget is around 10k. The primary usage would be to print black & white documents and occasional colour prints. Also, I would prefer a compact one.

I would also like to know which printer has the lowest running costs without compromising on quality. Also let me know the cost of cartridges for the printer.

If you need a scanner too, then Hp F2235 is the best. (Rs. 3.4k)

For a Basic printer, many many options are there:

A.s.s. is important, refill cost should be low, print quality should be good. So you may goto nearby HP dealer, Canon dealer and tell us your options.
 
If you can manage to get color prints outside elsewhere.

I strongly suggest to go for XEROX 3117 LASER PRINTER.

this costs under 4k.

Good print quality.

cost per print is Rs:1.20

low maintenance cost and occupies less space.

Ranked No:1 budget laser printer by PC World.

So i don't find any point in going for a costly high-end models.
 
^^Eh? Why would someone need a laser for mediocre usage ? IMO get yourself a decent HP AIO..

I am using a HP inkjet D2460. It is a good printer for black and white printing if you are willing to refill. The printer costs about 2500 and a set of cartridges will come to Rs 1400 approx. So the total cost is around Rs 4000 initially. The free cartridges that HP gives are only for testing. They dont carry much ink. So you have to take the total cost including a set of new cartridges.

Now why I prefer HP (cartidge No. 21) is that it is very easy to refill. I have refilled the black cartridge atleast 5 times and it is still working properly. All you need is a bottle of ink and a syringe. I bought inktec brand which costs Rs 250 for 250ml. But refilling is extremely easy. Just take care to refill a little less than 10ml at a time. Even the quality is fine if you dont mishandle the cartridge (rubbing roughly on the nozzle).

For Laser, if you are going for HP, look for a printer that uses Q2612 or 12A cartridge. They contain more toner and get refilled easily. The newer cartridges use chip to record the no. of pages printed. Prefer a brand that does not use toner cartridge with a microchip.

interested in getting this one.
where to get this at that price? seems to be around 3.9-4k everywhere.
and which printer cartridge this uses? since i'll need to buy the cartridges too.

also read that if we stick a piece of cling film to the cartridge head it wont dry-out and we can store it for long time - around two three months. (think i read it on one of the brochures that comes with the cartridge)
 
The way things are set up by manufacturers these days is that they make money either from the printer or the cartridges. In those models where cartridge costs are low, the printer is priced high and vice versa.

Now coming to your requirement, your choice would depend on usage. From the way you have worded your request, there is a bit of confusion. In your budget, the lowest running cost inkjet would be the HP F735 AIO which would cost you around Rs 7000/- or the D730 printer which would be a little cheaper. The cartridges for these are very reasonably priced and give good output in terms of number of pages. In case, you are looking at monochrome only then the laser already suggested would be even cheaper to run.

At the same time, I wonder whether this is worth for a typical home user. You are paying a premium of about Rs. 3500/- (for an AIO and perhaps Rs. 5000/- for a printer only) to lower the running cost. How many pages are you going to print? How many cartridges are you going to run through in a year? Looking at all that and the rate of obsolescence in this hardware spectrum, you may be better served by buying a printer that uses cartridges HP21 and HP22 which are very easy to refill as one member has already pointed out. That would be the D1460, D1560, etc in printers and the F2235, F2120 and F4185 in AIOs. The printers would cost you under Rs. 2000/- and the AIOs between Rs 3000 to Rs 3500/-.

So you now have about 6.5 K left out of your budget. Other members here can tell you what you can do with all that cash. :D
 
Sorry for bumping this thread....but want to know

canon mp160 uses pg41 cartridge does it has microchip...as i m facing similar problem...

And also can i use any other cartridge rather than this one?

I think you are referring to PG40. The colour one is CL41 AFAIK.
If you refill the cartridge, you have to reset the ink counter by using a software that is easily available on the net. Google for ink tank counter reset for mp160.

yup i bimistakely typed color cartridge number...thanks for the advice will post after trying
