Currently my dad is using a Toshiba laptop which is monster in size and weight. He really finds it difficult to carry it to office and so i want something light weight for him Requirements are as follows

1 Light in weight.

2. Screen size - i know this is dicey as netbooks are only option in sub 20k with minuscule screen size, but plz suggest what would be better, 10" and plus.

3. processor etc - absolutely no consideration, computer will be using for Tally and may be used for rarest of the rare, movie watching.

4. HDD -> Any thing above 20GB is good.

5. Price - Preferably sub 20k

6. OS -> XP Preferred as he is acquainted with it. Possibility (in future) of upgrade to windows 7 would be good but not necessary.

7. DVD Drive -> Good if exists. Not a compulsion

8. Connectivity -> Min 2 USB ports preferred, LAN and Wifi HAVE to be there, no compromise on that.

Please suggest

I feel a sub-20K budget and light-weight are BOTH a must for you, a netbook with around 10-inch screen will be the only option. The other requirements will be satisfied by any of the netbooks. But I feel it is better if your father actually checks out the netbooks in a shop and see how comfortable he feels using them (mainly due to small screens). Most of the laptops will be available for less than 20K. Here are some options:

1. Samsung N120, N140 (might be priced slightly more than 20K)

2. Asus 1005HA

3. Acer Aspire D250 (6-cell model)

4. Ideapad S10-2

5. Dell Inspiron Mini 10

Any clue about the Dell Inspiron Mini 12 ??? How much does it cost and all ??

I tried google but all i got was info about its launches an year back. For buying i just found one at rediff for 30k +

But i checked newegg.com.cn here and i found it for less than 3000 RMB (aless than 20k)

I am inclined towards this as it has 12.1" screen which will be better

Check this

Google Translate

Also checked acer India website and they have something of 11.6" screen size listed there but no price or anything. Any clue about this ??

http://www.acer.com/aspireone/

Acer Aspire One 751 is a really slick model, with good battery life. But Acer has sacrificed performance a bit by opting for a slower Atom processor, but I suppose for normal Tally and Word processing, it would be enough. This one should be available for around 24K.

I am not much sure about Dell Mini 12. Not much online info available on this. These should be available at Dell retailers, but price would be definitely more than 26-27K.

Also, if you can lay hands on a HP mini 311 (not yet available in India), it would prove better than a normal netbook. This is again a 11.6 inch model with Atom+ Nvidia Ion LE.

would have suggested you the acer timeline--good and powerful and really light and slim but you would have to shell upto 35thousand rs for it.(3810t/4810t)

among the netbooks you've got the asus 1002ha and the 1000he which retail at about 16.5thousand rs at primeabgb.

btw ur in china? you could pick up a good laptop there cheap am sure rates would be cheaper there compared to here back home+almost everything is made there.

^^ I too was of same intuition but that is not the case. Branded stuff (inc Laptops) are of same price.
Any reasons why no one suggests Dell Inspiron Mini 12" one ???

reviews said it wasn't as good as the dell mini 10/10v and also the baterry life in the mini12 was rubbish..but croma has it for sale @ 22k i think.

Ok so dell out of league, Acer and any other brand are only now in race. 11.6" screen is good (at least better than 10") but price point of 24k is more IMO.

Do acer give warranty if i buy a laptop from outside India ??

Ok. A really noob question. For netbooks which come without OS and i need to install one how do i do that with lack of DVD drive ??
And what about drivers for Wi Fi, display etc ??
How is the Samsung N138 at 17k price point??

Dont get a 10 inch netbook for your dad. I insist again, netbooks are good as travel companions but not as a replacement for your desk computing needs. The screen size and the tiny keys will lower your productivity and also mar your experience.

I guess the 751 is a worthwhile option, though I would insist on waiting for the Acer AS1410. I recently inquired and its not yet available. The 751 is around 22.5k

If you are thinking of spending 24k, spend 1k more and get the Samsung R517.
Check out a review of the Samsung R517 here: My newest toy : Samsung R517 - Digit's Technology Discussion Forum
It has got a 15.6 inch screen.

And if want to, you can also check out notebooks by Zenith and HCL. I admit that they are Indian companies and most of us are apprehensive about the build quality and after sales service of their laptops, if you can take a bit of risk, it may saw off in the longer run.
Zenith has some laptops priced at around 22k. But not sure if they are available or if they have been discontinued.

P.S: If you want to install an OS on a laptop without an optical drive, just use a pen drive.
Win2Flash does a very good job of making a pen drive bootable.
I installed Windows 7 yesterday on my friends HP Mini 110 using a 4GB pen drive.
It takes around 15-20 mins to make the pendrive bootable and transfer all the setup files.
After you plug it in your laptop and set your pendrive as the 1st boot device and restart your laptop, it is just like a normal Windows 7 installation when done using a DVD.

^^ See we already have a 15.6" Toshiba Laptop i had bought an year back from Canada for 24 k which is very good, just that weight is the issue.

So another 15.6" would be weighing equally, that is where the issue is.

Btw this Thursday / Friday, i will be taking my dad to a laptop mall here to have a look and feel of various lappies/netbooks.

Th samsung ones is like 2.56 Kgs in weight :(

That is a dealbreaaker.

If not a netbook, then what lightweight notebook do you guys suggest ???

Lightweight -> Less than 2 Kgs preferably and easy to carry in Mumbai Locals. Please suggest from the POV of a 59 year old person :)

I think Asus has the best netbooks. ASUS Eee PC 1005H model has battery of around 10 hours! But price should be around 23K. Not sure about the pricing.

Hmmn...i require a similar thing for my wife. Considering your dads age he needs big font (i.e. big screen)...but then weight increases...
Netbook is good option...i just enquired about samsung netbook from authorised dealer arihant in lamington.models n120(18,500) and n140 (17,650)...config is standarad for both 1 gb ram, atom 1.6, 160 hd..only thing is 120 has some better speakers and a glossy body finish..does anyone know if these prices are good or i need to start a thread...i also heard acer netbook for 15100 from futurebazaar...

raks...just confirmed from another sub-dealer...he is selling it for 17250/- (n140) and 18250 (n120) plus an external dvd wirter free (worth 3500) which i think is a great deal..

@ raks

You have precisely 2 options for light weight budget computing:

1. You go with the 11.6 inch to 13-14" notebooks with the ULV processors

or

2. go with a 11.6 netbook.

10" netbooks as mentioned earlier are small for a man of 59 years. I am sure after usage he's going to complain. Besides, as I have mentioned above, netbooks are purely travel companions not a replacement to a primary laptop or computer.

If I were u, I would up my budget and go with the Acer 3810T --- ULV processor, 13 inch screen and just 1.4 kilos and costs around 30-31k!
