Hmmn...i require a similar thing for my wife. Considering your dads age he needs big font (i.e. big screen)...but then weight increases...
Netbook is good option...i just enquired about samsung netbook from authorised dealer arihant in lamington.models n120(18,500) and n140 (17,650)...config is standarad for both 1 gb ram, atom 1.6, 160 hd..only thing is 120 has some better speakers and a glossy body finish..does anyone know if these prices are good or i need to start a thread...i also heard acer netbook for 15100 from futurebazaar...

raks...just confirmed from another sub-dealer...he is selling it for 17250/- (n140) and 18250 (n120) plus an external dvd wirter free (worth 3500) which i think is a great deal..

If you are getting External DVD writer free, seems like a good deal. Even on Ebay you do not find such rates.

with 10" netbook you will get a resolution of 1024 X 600 (Courtesy:Intel) . Most websites are designed for 1024X768

Dude now this is called coincidence. I just came back from the electronics mall here. Took my dad to checkout the lappies there. He did not like the tiny 10.1" ones at all. So i knew budget would overshoot now. Next we saw Lenovo thinkpads and one of them (without touch pad) and it was big screen ultra light but ultra costly too.

Then we saw the MSI booth and saw the same lappy which you have mentioned, the basic ones costed around 2800 RMB (approx 19000 Rs) which i found to be a steal.

Then we saw another one, a 14" one with similar config and it was 3600 RMB (less than 25000 Rs) I think i will be buying this 14" one for him and may buy the 12" one for me (just decided for mine..lol)

The 12" you mentioned is called U210X and 14" one is X410X

Anyone has any reviews / opinions about these ??

Edit: Just checked taobao and this 14" one is available for less than 3000 RMB which is less than 20k..awesome. Best part being they have a physical store in Shanghai. I will go there with my dad on saturday and buy it for less price hopefully if everything goes as per plan :)

Though prices vary locally, but the ND120 is avialable here at 16,500 without DVD and 18k with DVD and ND140 is available for 15,350 in NP.

How much does usually an external DVD writer cost ??
No hifi stuff, only some simple one.

Samsung and other branded ones would cost around 3k. Regular slim drives would cost close to 2k.

sunny27, is this an X-slim or some other model?

Is this the MSI U210 or the U230. Can you please confirm where you got the quote from. I called the Zebby head office in Chennai and they say they have the U210 only for 21k+taxes !

^^ I suppose this is the u201.

Supra, can you ask the dealer

-> whether it has 3 cell or 6 cell battery at that price point

-> what OS is bundled, if any ??

-> what config at this point ?? RAM HDD etc.

Can you do is soon as i need to decide quickly.

Also can anyone in Mumbai / Pune confirm the price (final) of the MSI U210 and what config is available at that price ??

Croma has this great offer on Lenovo Netbooks @ 17999 + usb external DVD writer (Brand Buffallo, min 3k I guess) free along with that !
I am slightly inclined toward the Asus Eee PC 1005HA.
