Ok here's what a geek would do.. use your laptop since it has the HDMI out.. buy the XBOX 360 HD DVD player.. about 160-170$.. then go to this url Hacking the XBox 360’s HD-DVD for the PC and download the drivers... and voila.. you get a HD DVD drive for your laptop :-)

PS: This one too comes with 5 free HD DVD movies like the Toshiba.

^^^ buddy but wats the sense in buying the xbox hd player for like $150 when u can get a toshiba hd dvd player at about the same price..

Tats is exactly wat a geek would do.. a dumb geek..!!

flexibility it gives you is the reason. YOu can watch HD DVD movie on your PC, connect it to TV when needed, RIP the dvd, 1080p playback, connect it to your xbox 360 and get hd playback on non HDCP devices. Standalone TOshiba player cant do all this.

buddy.. if u have a xbox.. only then can u connect the hd player to it.. and then if u hav a hd dvd player u might aswel connect it directly to ta tv.. an avoid one gadget which would be otherwise useless..

as far as connectin to the comp goes.. im sure there would be a hdmi to dvi cable or somethin to connect ta dvd player wit it..

also i doubt ud be able to rip an burn hd dvds using ta xbox hd player.. certainly not burn..

so it all comes down to it again.. wat eva ta xbox hd player does the toshiba player can do aswell.. then y go for xbox hd player.. an suppose u dont hav ta xbox or its not working properly.. guess tat means the hd dvd players screwd/useless aswell right?

just search ard. you will get enough quality HD videos/movies,etc,etc. Some torrent sites even carry 26Gb 1080p videos. infact even a 6-8Gb files will look great on your plasma.

Do some research yourself.
The Toshiba players are a very basic player. (A1 and A2 ) It does not even support 1080P playback.
You can use xbox drive to rip your HD DVD collection. All you need is AnydvdHD software and you are good to go.

I never said its better option in every case. But if anyone already has HTPC setup or laptop then its wise to consider Xbox drive over a standalone player. It gives great flexibility.

Buddy.. I guess Funky cleared your misconception... Toshiba A1 / A2 don't support 1080p.. the one that supports A30 / A35 .. don't cost that low... about 300 odd bucks.. with the current promos in the US.. you get 5 movies too.. with an average of $25 per movie.. the friggin drive will cost you $25-30.. do the math.. and decide for yourself.

^ Yup absolutely! HD is a lossless format basically, there's nothing as "Compressed HD".

It'll work from your laptop as long as you have DVI or HDMI output, S-Video or Analog will not give you more than a 720p resolution.
Errr? No

"HD" means higher resolution - 720 or 1080, as against the 480 of SD.

There is no "lossless" video format commercially available to the public. Blu-Ray and HD-DVD are compressed using H.264 or VC-1. The rips we download also use h.264, only at a lower bitrate.

HD-DVD and BR do carry lossless audio, however. DTS Master HD - 25mbps! Woot :ohyeah:

SC, go buy a hd-dvd player and a latest av-receiver. We'll check whether this lossless audio makes any difference :ohyeah:

No, I dont have a XBOX 360.

Was considering connecting it to my laptop and then connect that to the Plasma.

Btw if I buy the Toshiba A1 HD-DVD Player from US will I be able to play the usual DVDs bought/rented in India? No, I guess...

Yup... as zhopu said. All movies available on whatever media are lossy compressed. The stuff that you download has lower bitrate that is it. The codec remains the same.

About audio... well very few receivers actually support DTS Master HD or Dolby TrueHD. Plus you need a really high end receiver to experience anything better than what an older decent receiver can do with DD/DTS. I'm not sure if movies actually need all that fidelity :P. After all most of it is just lots of dialogue, bang bang and lots of crashes :P.(car/plane/ship and what not)

Wherever you shop make sure you check prices and sales everywhere 1st. Since it is the Xmas holidays now, every electronics company has a sale going on, this is the busiest shopping time of the year. My sister has a wine shop in Chicago, and does over half her yearly business in a period of 3 weeks over the holidays

Alright, but if I cant play DVDs here in India then its useless....

I want to get the Tosh A2 HD-DVD Player, but I need to be able to play DVDs too after getting it here....

Region encoding was not there on first batch of HD DVD players and discs. Region coding was set to be introduced from this year but dont know what happened to that. Xbox is region free, 99% even A2 will be region free.Mostly the new players that will start coming out will have region encoding.

Blur Ray is region coded from the start.

Ok, so HD-DVDs are region free...

Will the Tosh A2 also play DVDs...all regions?

Edit: A Tosh A2 sale on ebay.co.uk reads

This Dvd player will play HD Dvd's from any Region but will only play standard Dvd from region 1. I

do some research online and then ul find out ...well i will make it simple for you. ive done a lot of research and i found out oppo dvd players are the best . read the reviews...its got the highest ratings everywhere. they are available in america. just look at that brand.. ive heard they are much better than toshibas and denons
