suggest headphones within 1.5k for viewing tv

I got the Hd662 from eBay for around a little less than 1.8k.
The headphones are huge. After getting used to Sony super bass, the bass in these seem little flat. Sound clarity is good. Little sharp in higher notes.

I feel it needs a good amp to drive it, cause when using my cowon d2 player, the higher the volume was, the better the headphones became.

Only con is the headband which clamps the head tightly. It seems to be made of steel and quite tight. The ear foams which give good isolation, become hot after some time.

how does it sound ( if possible a small review of build quality and sound comparisons) ? i am thinking about buying a new HP

Out of the box it sounded like the bass was missing a lot. These are really flat sounding HP. They didn't reproduce sound like it was meant to be.

Example, in a movie if you see an explosion, you would expect a good banging type of noise that is full of bass. In this that bang was so flat in the sense, the whole bang noise sounded so faint like it came from a mile off. It didn't sound like what you would expect. Bass was a big disappointment.

The mids, highs & sound stage are all excellent. And really clear. You can make out individual instruments clearly. In some cases its a con (not its fault though), since like in Hindi movie ost, the songs have too much extra sounds, cymbals etc thrown in them. And you get to hear all of it at same level at same time.

The build quality is really good. It has steel wire headband I think, with a flat pleather type of material to support the head. The cups are large and completely surround the ears. The ear cushions are similar to Sony but better quality. So expect them to get hot after half an hour of use. I actually sweat around the ears when using these. The HP clamps too tightly and makes you feel like some small animal whose head is being bitten by a tiger.

I read on hi-fi about some guy who modded his 662, so decided to give it a try.
I modded them ( in a different non destructive manner ) a few hours back to make them feel more warm and give the bass a big boost in the process. The highs quieten up a bit, the mids become more prominent and the bass goes through the roof. It sounds 10 times better than what it was out of the box. It also removed the pressure that you feel on ears when using closed cans.
After modding these sound like a different pair of headphones. I love these headphones now!

Even at 2k, these are worth it if you mod them. Out of the box, you will feel disappointed a bit since they sound too flat. I think flat sounding headphones are not anyone would want to hear .

Forgot to mention this. Before modding it, I used to use equalizer >5db? for getting bass. After the mod, eq is set to zero for everything now. :D
I also feel its become a bit louder. I use cowon player at 15 volume now instead of 20 before the mod. Weird but true.

actually i have a two year old jvc ha-rx700 but its pads are pretty much ruined. Since this is for 1.75k (with discount) , was thinking of getting them . can i have the link to that modding thread ?
Any idea if these will be upgrade to my jvc ?

My mod is different. I didn't open any screws or anything. I just put a 2mm thick polyfibre stuffing layer between ear pads and the sponge covering the speaker. It made an opening for the bass vents which were covered by the ear pads completely and used to obstruct bass. Will put a pic if required.

I haven't heard the jvc, but I think I read somewhere on that same forum that they are similar in audio quality. The prices differ obviously.

Bought one ... pic would be helpful . dont know what polyfibre stuffing is . I was going to try foam like that thread says . May be try this with my JVC too :)

Poly fibre stuffing is the thing you find in pillows nowdays instead of cotton. Its made of very thin polyester fibres aligned together like cloth. You just need two 9cm discs of these about less than 2 mm thick (about 5 sheets of paper) to mod the HP. Any thicker and the ear pads won't close. You can get it from an old pillow or cushion. Else from a shop that deals in making these pillows or blankets for 5-10 rupees I guess.

Edit: just flatten the stuffing as much as possible before putting it behind the ear pads. I think the 2mm thick stuffing becomes around less than half mm after you push the ear pads around the speakers.

got the HP . it is so bright in highs !
burning them and loosening the steel clamps with books . Will probably burn them 50+ hrs hoping that highs get stable.
Going to the furniture store in the nearby market tomorrow or the next day to get foam and that polyfibre stuff .

Out of the box , my trance, hindi songs and rock collection sounds better ( just a bit ) than my JVC .
Sadly some slow songs lack volume in this HP. I feel that newer digital recordings sound as they supposed to but older/non remastered songs are lacking the volume . Bit-rate of 250+ essential for this HP.
Excellent HP for movies though .
