Hello,

I am looking for a SSD, my Mechanical hdd has failed, so looking to buy a SSD this time around i am confused which one to buy, my budget is around 10-12 thousand Rupees, mostly my computer is used for gaming and sometime video encoding.

Thanks.

To use an SSD as a storage device is not a good idea coz SSDs are very expensive... Even enthusiasts use SSD as a boot drive... So i wud suggest u to do this...

Primary Drive: Corsair Force SSD 80GB ~ 10.6k (Boot Drive)

Secondary Drive: Seagate 7200.12 1TB ~ 2.75k (Storage Drive)

You have two options:

1) buy a 60 GB OCZ vertex 2 SSD ~6.5k and buy a 2 TB seagate green for storage ~5K

2) buy a 120 GB OCZ vertex 2 SSD for 11.3K if you want to go for only SSD in the above mentioned budget.

60GB SSD wont b suitable for his usage... Companies Mention 60GB as unformatted space... After formatting and Windows 7 64Bit Installation 20GB wud easily get shaved off... He wud get some 40GB space to play wid after Formatting And Windows 7 Insallation...

After two three gud games installation he wud b left wid only 10GB space...

So IMO OP shud consider 80GB or above 80GB SSD... :)

Thanks, i am planning to go for OCZ vertex 2 120gb is this one a good choice or should i go for corsair or intel?

If you are buying locally, then OCZ vertex 2 120gb is priced reasonably @prime. Tell em to list on ebay & get a 250 GB hitachi external free.

I bought the 120 GB E version from Prime on 3rd of this month. The drive capacity is 111.79 GB formatted so I suppose it is a 34nm drive as per the article in OCZ forum where the new 120GB E model gives 107 GB formatted space.

I'm not aware of a 3.5" (they are supposed to be 2.5" + adaptor kit) SSD but I'm not upto-date on this front. Correct me if I'm wrong.

3.5" models are different and are not listed under impacted models on OCZ forum.

^ only the below models are affected:

OCZSSD2‐2VTXE60G
OCZSSD2‐2VTXE120G

Other models are unaffected whether it is 2.5" or 3.5".

sadly prime has OCZSSD2‐2VTXE120G .. so I guess it will have to be the 3.5"

also they said they don't know about the ebay listing where I could get a 250gb hitachi external .. i suppose the hitachi hdd is sent over by ebay..

I bought the 'E' model only and fortunately it is the older one with 34nm. so if you buy, you may get the 25nm or 34 nm drive.
The 250 gb HDD will be given by ebay.

I am ready to buy SSD but confused about its life? will the survive at least 5 years? and do they speed reduce overtime?

As far as SSD lifespan is concerned its more reliable than mechanical drives and lasts longer than mechanical drives... And i dont think so that its speed wud reduce over time coz SSDs dont come wid Intel's Sata bug lol... :P

But don't they advise against using SSDs for writes? I've read people using them only for the OS and storing the page and hibernation files in the storage drive.

How true is that?
