first u need to decide on the size based on ur viewing distance,second what content do u intend to watch like SD content which is ur normal cable,dth .
HD content and gaming.

My viewing distance will be 8 to 12 feet max.....

I will be using Tata Sky and Divx Movies in HD

well for ur viewing distance a 40inch size tvs is perfect,the above said PV8 is a good choice too,as long as u don't intend to use it via pc or as a monitor.
good 40inch lcds are slightly above ur budget.

A full hd TV won't be of much use for tata sky and your divx movies. The Panasonic plasma suggested above would be best for this purpose.

well if u are getting in singapore(SG)/india then i suggest u to have a look at the samsung B550/B530,B650 or the sony S550A and V550A (V5500 SG).
the tvs sold in singapore have a built in DVB-terestrial tuner like the sony V5500 and samsung models .so the price may not be that cheap,considering the indian models are sold without the tuner.the S550A,V550A however isn't sold with a DVB-terrestrial tuner.u can also buy them in the grey market in india cheaper by around 10% to 20% and in some models such as Z series as much as 50% cheaper compared to showroom prices in india.

the panasonic PV8 is good to for the price,but the above said lcds does have better image processing and higher contrast and the power consumption of these lcds are half of pv8.
u must also check the availabilty of pv8 since already a replacement model called X10 with a higher price has been launched.pv8 cost approx 45k and the X10 around 55k to 58k.

@Douldseven - Please make sure that you don't buy anything blindly without seeing the performance yourself. Make sure that you use this thread only for shortlisting the 4-5 panels that you are interested in. Then go to the showroom and demo them before your final purchase.

At the end of the day, a lot of LCD/Plasma have quite similar specs, but to see them side by side playing the same clip is a revelation.

I've read on most of the forums (and not personally experienced it) that the PV8 produces a much better picture quality as compared to other LCDs - more natural colors. Please see it yourself before you decide.

well the samsung B530 costs anywhere b/w 55k to 58k,B550 around 61k to 60k,samsung b650 costs around 68k..

well there are tons of threads about lcd and plasma,in every forum in the world, to till this date its debated heavily.
the said PV8 is HD ready plasma,main reason it so popular is that for the price u can't get a decent lcd similar size lcd,since it is HD ready SD content like 480p,576p looks good,but if a signal such as 576i or 480i which tata sky+,big tv and some sun dth models output via compenent,the pv8 isn't as good as the above said lcds in displaying this 576i.
the pv8 has decent ANSI contrast better then lcds from panasonic,sharp,lg.but the newer lcds like the above said model from samsung and sony have higher contrast,they are FHD lcds with ur viewing distance when a FHD content is played u can notice the benifits of FHD .
regarding the colors of lcds/plasma it varies from people to people and is entirely subjective,some prefer the colors of samsung plasmas more then panasonic plasmas.but panasonics have better contrast.
some(majority going by the sales) simply prefer the crisp ,sharp 3d like image of lcds.
the future of flat panels for the next decade is OLED whose image quality resembles more like lcds rather then plasmas.i.e like the crisp image of lcds,except that the OLED has hell of a lot more contrast.

ultimately buy what ur eyes like the best.
