hi guys!!!!one of my freinds is planing to buy a prosumer digi cam, he is an architect and more into interiors stuff, he already has a film based slr-the nikon FM-10...(  ya i know thts vintage!!!!!!-only wanted u guys to know tht he knows his stuff), he's planing for a digital slr, but thts later, presently he's planing to use the prosumer cam for reference shots...guess mostly interiors......he's a sucker for zooms-you can guess tht from the list-..so please share ur esteemed opinions!!!grey and official prices wud be helpfull!!!!:hap2: here's the list-
PANASONIC DMC-FZ18K
FUJI FINEPIX S8100-FD
SONY CYBERSHOT DSC-H50
CANON IS-S5
.....any other commendable cam tht i missed, u can add it!!!!he has used the SONY H9 some time back(mabe H7) and he liked it...budget consraint is like 20k, so wht say guys?????:)

hey I own a S8000fd and before buying tht did a good review of all those except Samsung.

I dnt know the price there but looking at price S8000fd was best.Ther was a 50$ MIR till las month.I know tht Panasonic is very sensitive to light. The canon S5 is good but zoom is only 12x.Fuji has 18X and dual Image stabilization tho one is simply boosting ISO.

If I wer u I wud choose Fuji S8000(8100 is not worth it looking at difference in prize IMHO).

wait for sony H50 its got a bigger sized sensor(i mean physical size) then the panny, the sony sensor is actually 10mp but the sony lenses utilizes only 9mp so its sacrifising 1mp for the sake of better image quality.the older H9 had bad optics,in the H50 sony has slighty revised the lens elements.the newer sony H50 also allows u to control the effect of noise reduction.another feature is the ability to take videos in pitch dark using infrared.it also has a bigger lcd and much better flash then the panasonic.
the advantage of the panny is that it has a wider zoom and more tele too.
the disadvantages are it has a bad sensor or rather bad image processor.it also records movies in quick time format, which is not friendly in some dvd players .also u cannot use the zoom mode when taking a video which is realy annoying.

thanx for the replies guys-

@Alchemist/Rambo- ok , the fuji S8000fd seems interesting, so whts it priced in india?grey/official?

Hi!

I have played around with the PANASONIC DMC-FZ18K, though I do not own it (yet!).

It really is a fantastic little camera.
The Leica lens is absolutely the best ultrazoom lens around short of a SLR.

the wide 28 mm end is more useful than you would think!

The camera does have issues with the image processing at higher ISOs but most shots I tend to take are either in sunlight or with a flash and it is really great for that.

If the image processing really bothers you, you can shoot RAW and do post processing later, a feature not found in many other cameras.

I would say that 99% of the time, it is a great camera.

Finally, this may or may not be important to you, but it quite light and relatively small, can be operated with one hand.

That in my view really adds to the usability of the camera (MY Nikon film SLR saw much less use once I bought the compact Nikon TW Zoom 105).

I would also suggest that you go the panny forums on dpreview.com. There are a lot of people with FZ18s and you can get a good idea of pros and cons and sample pictures.
I myself will be in the market for a prosumer cam in the next couple of months. I am leaning heavily towards the FZ18K having used it in the past but will be interested to see what you finally go with.

Best of luck with your purchase.

Hmmm tho I have been suggested Canon by most.. I have come across guys who like Panasonic. This thread is good knowledge base for me too :D

Best of luck with what you get!! keep us posted with your feedback.

@spolygon-tht was indepth!!!!!kool....u have some idea how much the panasonic DMC FZ18k is goona cost in the grey????thanx for ur expert reply!!!
@adder-thanx for the price update-17k(grey) for the H50 is a highly tempting price!!!!!i never imagined it would be this less....hmmm i dont know ...suddenly the H50 is seeming to be a very tempting buy!!!!!!!:ohyeah:

Hi!

Sorry I am not sure of the FZ18 prices here.
The one I had access to was bought in the US. The one that I will buy will probably be also from the US. In the US the current cheapest price is about $300. So I guess that should mean 14K-15K grey here.
If the new Sony is at 17K that is a great price too.

My only issue with the Sony is that I would want to see reviews on expert sites (which should start appearing next month) before I decide to go for it. On paper the specs look quite nice. However in the recent past, Sony models in this range have had problems. So I would like confirmation that the end product is as good as the specs are.
This is my personal view (as I am researching this range too) and I do not want to offend any Sony lovers out there. :)

well the sony H models have been selling well particularly h1,h2,h5.in the H7 and H9 people expected a lot but it had problems with the noise reduction, and sony have addresed it with the new one and if had looked at the lauch article at dpreview ,they thanked sony for the addition of noise reduction settings.

Agreed!

H1 and H2 are very good cameras.

Also I agree, the H50 does seem to have a host of desirable features.

It is beacuse of the problems with the recent H7 and H9 that I would want to see the camera in actual action. If it delivers all that it promises it would be a smashing camera. I just want to make sure that a) The bigger sensor does actually deliver b) No new problem has cropped up.

It's a fair amount of cash so it is better to be as well informed as possible.:)

@Alchemist/Rambo- ok , the fuji S8000fd seems interesting, so whts it priced in india?grey/official?

Indeed it is...but its still not a perfect cam...,has its own share of flaws but it still performs brilliantly in most

shooting conditions keeping in view the form factor and price.

The grip on the cam has a superb feel.:D

I can upload some shots if you're keen on knowing its capabilities.

Regarding the prices...am not too sure about the showroom prices but it sells around 18k in grey market.

@the alchemist- thanx for the price update, trying to get a grey h50 piece, but seems it isnt in stock at most of he places-asking from a week to ten days time in bangalore!!!!:(
any other views guys????;)
