@adder-my friend inquired at the sony showroom -bangalore, those guys had no idea when the H50 was scheduled for india release!:huh: !!anyways my personal opinion (for digicams) is that a grey piece from a trusted source is much better option!!!:)

^ Yup get grey..

@spolygon

Have you used the S5 IS as well? What are your thoughts on it compared to the FZ18.

Hi, don't bother about the F8000, it suffers from distortion at the wide end. Since your friend will be shooting buildings, the straight lines will be slightly curved. Not a good thing at all. I would suggest a Canon 350D + 50mm 1.8 lens. No distortions from this lens.

Just my 2 cents.

Sorry. No I have not used the Canon S5 IS. However the two cameras have been compared side by side in a couple of reviews on the net. From what I remember, the FZ18 was rated the better overall camera but the video shooting on the Canon was rated to be better. I will post the link as soon as I find it.

I cannot find the exact link where there was an in-depth comparison of the two cameras but are here are a couple of links that may be useful:

Imaging Resource "Comparometer" â„¢ Digital Camera Image Comparison Page (choose the two cameras from the drop down menu): This compares pictures taken under identical conditions.

Digital Cameras Side-by-Side, 2 cameras: Digital Photography Review

Canon PowerShot S5 IS Review: 17. Compared to...: Digital Photography Review

Here is the S5IS compared to the FZ8 (not the FZ18) which is the predecessor the to the FZ18 (and may be a great buy, its about $240 dollars in the US)

Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ18 Review: 11. Compared to...: Digital Photography Review

Here is tha panasonic compared to the Sony H7, Fuji S8000fd and Olympus SP-560UZ

Overall between these two (S5IS and FZ18) the general opinion seems to be:

a) The Leica lens is superior to the Canon (better optics and more range on the short as well as the long side)

b) Both have problems at high ISOs though the Panasonic can shoot RAW and the Canon cannot.

c) The video on the Canon is superior with stereo audio recording and the ability to zoom while recording video.

d) Canon has a hotshoe and a swivel LCD

e) The panasonic is 407 gm vs 550 for canon (important to me!)- and build quality on the Panny is still quite good

Hope the links are useful. (apologies to those who are already familiar with these)

If anybody can find other information which compared the cameras under discussion, it will be appreciated

@BF1983- my friend is going to shoot interiors, so guess thts short range-distortion wont be more(ok i coud be wrong!!!!:bleh: ) so wht matters more here is the wide angle lens/zoom also a sensor which pics up darkly lit spaces with less noise and IS
i dont think he would be interested in the canon 350D, coz presently he is not interested in dSLR's-his point-he says he doesnt have the time-or patience to master a dSLR-and if he did get tht he would use it for his nkon FM10 :rofl: :rofl: (now i dont really really see tht happen-even if he had the time):)
@spolygon-gr8 links pal!!!!thanx for sharing:hap2:

Well if it is in the interiors a DSLR makes even more sense ! Coz a P&S cam will have a lot of noise while a DSLR will have much less noise. And I hope he knows there is an Auto mode in the DSLR !

He can start moving to manual mode slowly after that. I am of the opinion that if you using your camera for work, a DSLR is the way to go !

Building interiors without a flash on a P&S will be a complete disaster. He'll only get amateurish output with that. A SLR with a medium to wide angle prime is the only solution. That is unless he's willing to lug around a tripod and remote shutter release all over the place. Even then, nothing will come close to an SLR's output quality.

^^ Totally with Chaos here.

It's indoor photography man. You're buying superzoom cameras with ranges from 30-450mm out of which everything from 50-450mm will be unused always!

My picks:
1. DSLR (Canon 350D and Nikon D40 are both darn cheap right now) + 10-20 Sigma lens or even a 17-50 f2.8 constant lens. What you need is great undistorted wide-angle capability and neat high ISO snaps to shoot with available light, both of which you don't get in any prosumer right now.
2. Consumer cameras: Panasonic wide-angle range of FX cameras. But this is only if you insist on a super-portable solution.

^^Well there is a prosumer that does wide angle but its not fast enough and costs a bomb... the Sigma DP1.

Its roughly a 4.5mp sensor. Sigma has a weird way of measuring megapixels on its foveon sensor cameras. However the megapixel count of a foveon can't be compared directly with a matrix bayer sensor used by others. 4.5mp on foveon is equivalent to around 8mp on a bayer sensor in terms of detail.

Isn't that the 4.5x3 funda of 4.5 capturing R,G,B seperately on their Foveon sensors?

Chuck it. :D Let the OP come and read the relevant posts and lets stop crapping. :)
