Car & Bike Suggestion for a Car.

Hey Guys,I'm thinking of buying a new car for myself. I will travel 55 kms daily(except Sunday) and most part in city(mumbai). I am confused between Swift vdi and Swift vxi. Swift vdi costs 582000 and vxi costs 506000. Petrol costs 50 bucks and 38 for diesel. Can anyone advise me which car to buy?
Suggestions are highly appreciated.:)

The performance of Swift Diesel is way better than petrol.
I would definitely recommend you to opt for Diesel.
I know the price is a little high from petrol, but this is a one time investment.
For the first time, i have seen a Diesel engine outperform the Petrol one.
Swift Diesel (Go for it) ...

Outperform in what? The 0-100 time favors the petrol, the top speed favors the petrol, the in gear acceleration favors the petrol. Unless you put a tuning chip, the diesel is definitely slower, has more noise, vibration, harshness and is also prone to turbo lag. Plus you can't get a version with airbags and climate control. In addition the petrol is significantly cheaper.

The only reasons to get the diesel are either if you want to put a tuning chip to get more power out or if you have a very long commute and need fuel economy. If you put a tuning chip, the diesel will be marginally quicker than the petrol. However the rest of the issues still persist.

With the OP's running, the diesel will end up becoming just a wee bit cheaper when kept for 5 years. To really gain from the diesel, the monthly running has to be atleast 2500 km.

Thank You rocker123, Chaos and sujit801.
I'm planning to keep my car for more than 5 yrs. But I've heard from my friends that the FE goes down gradually in petrol and swiftly in diesel after sometime. And as chaos said that monthly commute should be of about 2500km while mine is 1500. So I think I should go for Vxi model.

Also if I change the tyres and get new alloy rims will it affect the FE??? I have to replace as previous owners are not satisfied with the stock tyre's grip.

Not so fast :P

Swift P has 20-80 & 40-100 times of approx 14 & 19 seconds

The swift D has corresponding timings of 12 & 14 seconds.

The swift P will win in an outright drag. On the street, when overtaking etc, the diesel obviously has the lead ;)

The other point about FE is what is the avg speed you will be doing ?

Fast highways mean you get the best FE but stop & go traffic, will skew the numbers quite a bit.

I'm thinking the petrol will work out only marginally more in the long run.

Those 20-80 in 3rd and 40-100 in 4th are idiotic things to measure. No one with half a brain ever does 20-80 in 3rd or 40-100 in 4th

Expect better FE than the old engine with the K12M that they have recently plonked into the swift. I'm not sure what your friend means but a force fed engine will develop sludge faster than a naturally aspirated engine for sure and as a result due to extra wear and tear will need an overhaul faster.

What do you think would be a better measure of in gear acceleration then :P

The best way to measure that is quarter mile. There's no use measuring single gear speeds as every car has different gear ratios. The taller the gear, the lower will the acceleration be. But that doesn't mean that the car in general is slow.
