I have Audio Technica M50.
Since my brother is coming from us ,I was thinkin to buy udac2 from amazon for 130$.
Will M50 + udac2 make a good combo? Will it be worth pairing udac2 with m50?

Kindly suggest.

I dont know about the D1 + M50 synergy.

D1 has a warm signature , that goes well with Bright and natural HPs.

Benny has the D1 as well as the M50, ask him .

Maverick D1 ehh?? Its good, has great bass. Doesn't render the best imaging and sounds kinda closed and muffled IMHO. But the bass is nice and textured. Atleast the stock tube sound that way.
FWIW, the D1 is a good vfm, not the best with stock components, but it certainly has potential to improve if you are not afraid to open it up and change the opamps to make it sound to suit your needs.

Although the synergy with the M50 is not something to carve on cave walls, I suggest a Solid state amp rather than a tube one if you don't want a dark presentation. The M50 is not very power hungry, but being a fun sounding headphone, you would find yourself wanting to crank that volume up as compared to neutral sounding headphones. Which is where the amp would do you good. M50's are also forgiving to the dac, so you wouldn't really notice a, forgive me for saying this, a earth-shattering difference between a 200$ and a 2000$ dac. But you will definately come up smiling if paired with a fun sound dac+amp. I think since your budget seems nice, the Audinst Mx1 is good(I wouldn't use superlatives ;) ) for the M50 since it has a very smooth sound.

Lemme know if you have any other queries, hope that helped. :)

Thanks :) Mx1 is available at ebay 179$ free worldwide shipping from korea.

One more thing, i have all my mp3(320kbps) in 16bit/44khz so will i benefit from dac or it is usefull if playing only the lossless(FLAC) formats.

Hmm, but when you use the D1 alone, tube is never used .. the warm signature of D1 is cause of the opamps and its own circuitry .

when you use the D1 as dac+amp , its purely solid state.

^ Yep! Tube is used in the Pre-out, not otherwise; which is why Ryan made A1 - to satisfy all the toob needy headphone customers.

I did not like the stock tube or opamps much. For tubes, Raytheon Windmill getter and Western Electric 396A were better followed by GE NOS tube.

@killerz,

I don't think I can tell apart 320kbps MP3 from FLAC in a blind test. Whether DAC chip cares about that is another story ;)

Let these Intelligent people say what they want to, the D1 is too warm for the M50. hehehe :P

Looking for a clear answer to this.

lol, am not commenting on the synergy , (i was not sure in the first place thats why i ashed you to comment :| )

its just that the warm (very ) nature is not cause of the tube. ( WTH , there is not a halo smiley on TE )

If its a well ripped 320kbps mp3, I can't tell the difference. I failed miserably in a blind test. But the thing is I don't know whether its a good rip or no untill after i've downloaded the album. Thats why i prefer downloading Flacs. Atleast I can't tell the difference with the D1 -> M50 or my present gear. :angel:

(where did you get that halo smiley :( , the smiley archive does not show that, or does it ?? )

yeah , i also am not able to diff, between 320/flac. But its always better to download flac if you get them.

Most of the DACs now have 24/ 32 Bit D/A , and here i am still not able to tell the difference between 16 bit lossless-lossy! :(

24/96 by next year would become 32/384 and your average track will be about 250-500 MB in size :ohyeah:

I'd stick with 320kbps files for portable players and FLAC for the PC.

@killerz,

While I don't have much idea about Audinst MX-1, it has good reviews. Since we have some uDAC-2s here, may be you should get MX1 and tell us how it sounds ;)

I haven't tried the Audinst but have the uDAC II and can tell you that it does sound pretty amazing with most neutral / warm headphones .Since uDAC II is neutral compared to the older uDAC it doesn't have much of synergy issues with any cans as such . Overall detailing ,clarity etc is very good for the price and just a notch below MS2 in terms of soundstage and imaging .
