Dear Members,

I am looking forward to purchasing a 1.5 ton split ac. In my area, the brands available are: Samsung, LG, Voltas, Videocon, Onida & Godrej. Pls let me know your opinion on which brand would be reliable and would provide good cooling. I do understand that Daikin, OGeneral, Hitachi are good but I can't buy them because of non-availability and service-issues.

Also,it would be great if you can throw some light on which make compressor these brands use.

Samsung are good and i am speaking from personal experience. But haven't tried out other brands so it is a biased opinion as well.

Can you check if Panasonic is available in your area?
If yes, then its better than all the brands you have mentioned.

Yes, Panasonic is available, but nearest service center is some 60 km away. So I am not willing to go for Panasonic due to limited service support in my area.

dont buy a samsung ac as i have faced a lot of problems in all the splits i have owned from samsung. Go for LG or voltas.

Amongst the ones you have said, without a doubt LG. Would not touch Onida and Videocon at all. We have about 12 LG splits between home and office, and they have never given a problem. Maybe luck but that's my personal experience. Carrier have been reliable for me too.

In that case, choose the on with the best support in your area. Make sure you keep taking AMCs from them.

My LG ACs have never lasted above 2 years without AMC. Under AMC they will keep fixing things as many times as you want.

AMCs are expensive, and frankly I have never needed one. Never had a major problem, and I have a local guy who comes and services and cleans each AC for about 400 bucks. I get it done once a year. AMCs run to 3K each AC per year I think? Maybe [touch wood] I have been lucky.

Dear All,

Really appreciate your inputs. I bought a Samsung 5* split air-conditioner (1.5 ton), got it installed and it has served me well till date. However, within a week of getting it installed, birds have eaten up the insulation cover on the copper connecting pipes for half the length of the pipes, roughly for about 2.5 metres.

When I contacted the service center, they told that the pipes have to be disconnected before re-insulating them, which may result in loss of gas as well.

I would like to know whether leaving the copper pipes bare (half the length) in the atmosphere would cause any damage to them or to the machine in general. I am OK with sacrificing cooling efficiency to a certain extent due to the loss of insulation.

I am not sure why the service centre insists on disconnecting and reconnecting those refrigerant pipes. That isn't required IMO. Exposed refrigerant lines simply reduces the cooling efficiency (thereby putting a heavier load on the compressor and an increase in the power bills as well!) without affecting the refrigerant or the AC innards.

Can you feel a decreased cooling effect when the AC is switched on? If not, simply buy some PE insulation from a nearby AC repair shop and cover the 2 lines individually using tape. Duct tape is recommended and is expensive but lasts a lot longer than the usual brown cellophane tape which may wear out later. Put a blob of insulation at the connections for the outdoor unit to avoid the insulation chipping off.

Apologize for going OT...which is a better brand Mitsubishi or OGeneral for cooling a 460sq ft room. Im looking at 2X 1.5tonn machines. Initially thought of going for Hitachi but having second thoughts. Plz advise

Both are good, you cant go wrong with either ... Go with one who have good service support in your area ...

The room dimension is 27L X 17W sqfeet. Theres a big house towards the west and towards the east there a couple of rooms. Road towards the North and this side is well proected from sunlight with a tent kinda arrangement. To the south of this room theres a bedroom. IMO this room is well protected from direct sunlight in all direction. But we have a lot of big doors and windows and all the doors and windows have curtains, So will a 2X 1.5tonn arrangement suffice or should i go for 2X2 Tonn or any higher config. Pls advise as Ill be buying soon before the priices shoot up.

There is wall unit housing a 40" LCD, a computer, a couple of tubelights and a couple of ceiling fans(if these matter)

thx abhifusion ....just been to the dealer decided on Mitsubishi MSE18VC 1.5T machine. He quoted 41K including installation. Appeared to be a genuine guy so keeping my fingers crossed. Thx for the inputs. Appreciate it.

The connecting pipes are not accessible as I stay on 4th floor in an apartment. So the pipes need to be disconnected before re-insulating them.

Also, I can feel no reduced efficiency in cooling due to the exposed copper pipes and hence am planning not to re-insulate them.

However, my concern remains that whether leaving the copper pipes (about 2.5 metres in length) exposed to the atmosphere would cause any harm/ damage the pipes.

Thanks in Advance,

Chiranjib

Any inputs in this regard would be helpful.

With the summer heat increasing, I can still feel no appreciable drop in cooling capacity/ efficiency due to the exposed copper pipes of my Samsung 1.5T split A/C. The exposed portion is roughly 2.5 mtrs in length.

Request members to comment on whether leaving the copper pipes uninsulated and exposed to the atmosphere would cause any harm/ damage.
