Suggestion required for new split airconditioner

It is advisable to insulate the refrigerant lines - exposing it to the atmosphere causes a loss in the temperature of the refrigerant as it circulates between the compressor and the evaporator. It may not be evident as much because the refrigerant flow rate is very high but over the period of usage, the loss will result in the increased power bills.

I am surprised you haven't done it yet! Summers are here already.

The more the pipes are exposed, the more the temperature drop. You are practically heating the pipes carrying the gas, by exposing it to the hot sun. Hope you get what it means.

Dear All,

Really appreciate your inputs. I bought a Samsung 5* split air-conditioner (1.5 ton), got it installed and it has served me well till date. However, within a week of getting it installed, birds have eaten up the insulation cover on the copper connecting pipes for half the length of the pipes, roughly for about 2.5 metres.

When I contacted the service center, they told that the pipes have to be disconnected before re-insulating them, which may result in loss of gas as well.

I would like to know whether leaving the copper pipes bare (half the length) in the atmosphere would cause any damage to them or to the machine in general. I am OK with sacrificing cooling efficiency to a certain extent due to the loss of insulation.

The connecting pipes are not accessible as I stay on 4th floor in an apartment. So the pipes need to be disconnected before re-insulating them.

Also, I can feel no reduced efficiency in cooling due to the exposed copper pipes and hence am planning not to re-insulate them.

However, my concern remains that whether leaving the copper pipes (about 2.5 metres in length) exposed to the atmosphere would cause any harm/ damage the pipes.

Thanks in Advance,

Chiranjib

How was the AC installed originally if its inaccessible ?

The insulation cladding is tubular, cut it open, slip it around the copper tube and then duct tape it and maybe sheath it with some metal or spike wires to keep the birds away.
