I was hunting around for a desktop and came up with this configuration

AMD Phenom x2 550
Asus M3A78 M
4gb of ram
250gig hdd (Seagate/WD/whatever)
ATI HD4770 video card
17inch monitor (LCD/CRT...space isn't an issue)

Dont need keyb/mice/ups or other useless stuff.

Can someone get me an estimate on this system? I was quoted around 28k for this along with those fancy coolermaster-whatever PSU's.

My budget is strictly 25k, not a penny more. Is it worth skimping on the video card for say a 4670? How much of a performance difference is it?

Could I get a cheaper motherboard/proccy combo? I've been gaming for quiet a while so I would need something that would let me play at okayish resolutions with mid to high details.

Thanks :hap2:

Intel E5200 + gigabyte G31 mobo might be a better combination with an aftermarket cooler.

It was - a couple of months back. Not anymore, with AMD's recent introduction: The Phenom II X2 550 BE which priced at 5500 INR.

I'd suggest the OP to go with the suggestion he's posted. Few things to be noted:

The HD4770 is OOS everywhere. It was once priced at 6.5k and now dealers've been quoting lucrative prices such as 8k odd. You might've to wait for a while so long as the 4770 is back. The IGP onboard should give you playable frames for most games.

What are the components you're looking for? You have listed out the core components but haven't mentioned if you need a PSU, speakers, keyboard, mouse yada yada.

I have mice keyboard speakers and stuff. And the PSU I would be hoping for would be the coolermaster 460W (?).

I'm willing to get a cheap monitor, PSU and even a motherboard/proccy combo since for gaming, a good GPU would probably compensate for a poor processor.

And yea the HD4770 I inquired about was retailing for 7.8k...

As for the HD4770, wait so long as the stocks turn up.

You've decided on the CPU and the mainboard. As for the RAMs, a pair of Transcend 2G 800MHz kits should do. Also helps for mild OC'ing if you wish to.

Instead of the Coolermaster 460W, opt for the Zebronics Pro Power 500/550W. Should be a notch better than the Coolermaster Extreme Power PSUs.

A Dell 19inch LCD - the E1909W IINM costed my friend 7.5k a month back. That's a fairly good deal for the 19incher which has a DVI port as well and has the 16:10 ratio. Good enough I reckon.

Sorry but it doesn't work out that way. A poor processor can bottleneck a decent GPU which'd lead to bad frames. A cheap PSU can in turn deliver insufficient power to the components and they're prone to early failures. ;)

Just checked, the 4770 isn't available but the dealer does have a 4830. Does it offer comparable performance? I've decided to go for a cheaper cabinet, zebronics 500w PSU, drop ram down to 2gb and get a second hand CRT monitor.

I am getting the same proccy and an entry level motherboard.

Fitting into my 25k budget pretty well.

So the config atm is

AMD Phenom x2 550

Gigabyte entry level (whatever that means) motherboard

2GB Ram

ATI 4830

250 GB HDD

17inch CRT monitor

Zebronics 500W PSU

Standard cabinet.

Working out to around 25k. The main concern I have is about the 4830. From my 2003-2004 experience with video cards, the "LE" editions of high end cards don't really have better performance.

EG the nVidia 5700 LE was a downgraded 5800xt (higher latency ram, lower mem/cpu clock) and performed worse than the 5600 XT.

Is the performance of ATI 4770 and 4830 comparable?

Yeah the 4770 is barely a clone of the 4830 but the 4830 has a higher pwr draw and comparably a large amount of heat being dissipated. Give or take a few frames, the cards are ideally the same minus the dies shrink for the 4770.

Did your dealer refer to the pricing of the Zebronics 500W PSU he's retailing? If it's the 'Platinum' series, prepare to bid bye to your stuff soon enough. IIRC that PSU did smoke a couple of rigs on TE before.

And ensure that the 'Gigabyte entry level (whatever that means) motherboard' supports your processor before you plonk it. :P

Probably will, warna what'll I do with a proccy that doesn't work :P

As for the 4830 dissipating large amounts of heat and the power consumption.....I think I would probably have to opt for a better cabinet and psu combo...bleh.

What do you recommend? The cooler master thingy again?

No just wait and be satisfied with the IGP (read as onboard graphics) of your mainboard. When the 4770 stocks arrive, it'd be priced lesser. Closer to the 7k mark or even lower. Then invest in the card. Makes no sense in buying the 4830 now.

As for the low priced cabinet, get the Zebroncis Bijli. W/o the power supply bundled, it should be priced close to 1.2k odd. Cant get any cheaper than this.

That makes a lot of sense but dammit how do I convince myself to wait! IT HAS TAKEN OVER MY BODY!!!!! HALP!!

Why don't you opt for GTS 250 ? Its just 500-70bucks more than 4770, if the later is priced for 7k then..

The board you have decided is a 780G, either spend in cheap 790GX or get a 770 :P Biostar T790GXB retails for 4.7k while the Asus listed in the main post should be selling for no less than 5.5k ?

GTS 250 should be the best bet for you , the cheapest ones are prices close to 7k , decent performer

@l33t_5n1p3r_max

Seems like you need procy + mobo + 4GB RAM + 250GB HDD + good VFM GPU card + 17" monitor. Well, I would recommend you these:

Phenom II X2 550 BE -> 5.2k

Biostar TA 790GX 128M -> 5k

2X2GB Corsair xms2 @800 Mhz -> 2.9k

Seagate 500GB HDD -> 2.6k

Saphire / XFX / MSI 4770 -> 6.5k-7.5k ( due to availability )

17" Dell / Samsung / Acer ->6.5k-7k

Total = roughly 29k.

Now this exceeds your budget. So here is my opinion.. Cut down your RAM to 2GB as it will be of no use if you don't play GTA4 or use 64bit OS which isn't necessary I think. Secondly, on a 17" you will not get any difference between 4670-4770 really. So go for this::

Phenom II X2 550 BE ->5.2k

Biostar TA780G / TA790GX 128M -> 3.5k / 5k

2GB Corsair xms 2 800MHz -> 1.5k

MSI 4770 / Saphire 4670 -> 6.5k / 4.5k

17" Acer ->6.5k

250GB Seagate -> ~2k

So if you choose TA780GX mobo + MSI 4770 with the others, you have to pay 25.2k or if you choose TA790GX 128M mobo + Saphire 4670 with the others, you need 24.7k. Choice is yours... :) Remind you that these are excl. of VAT.
