ohkk...guys..one of my uncle called me up yesterday and asked me to suggest some good handy cam to him cauz he will be getting it from dubai..he had bought a few mags and stuff from the sony world and said that he didnt like any of the sony cams much...so is lookin for something better maybe canon and all.

he was saying that he needs high megapixel cam for still photos-(7-10 mp)

and i said tht u may not find a 10 or even 7 mp handycam...:S:S

his main priorities are as follows :

atleast 12 x optical zoom

very good quality still photos as well as video recording

either dvd handycam or mini dv or HDD.-anyone will do whichever is better.

not very professional and high end..but something in mid range..

there is nothing such as MAX BUDGET but he says anything around 45-60 k will do....and while suggesting ,keep in mind that dubai prices are way lower than india...around 2-3k less on low end and more on the higher end models.

so all u guys who have knowledge of photography..and know some good models plzzz suggest accordingly

thanx in advance...

Even a HD camcorder wouldn't give you stills quality even cokmpaable to basic low-end digicams...

If he wants min. 12 X zoom, there are only 2 decent options...

Canon S3IS and Sony DSC-H5

between the two, both are pretty much at par....

However, the S3IS has better video recording...the H5 has better low light shooting capabilities

Also, check this for picture samples:

Sony Cybershot DSC H5 compared to Canon Powershot S3 IS

^^both of them are still cameras with vid rec ?rite ??...if it would be my purchase i would have got it...but my uncle wants..a handycam..and i dont want to sit and make him understand tht u wont get good photo as well as vid in a handycam...

so which will be a good handycam with max possible good photo quality...?

whoops..my bad...I misread the OP as he wants a good digicam with decent video capabilities instead of the other way around :ashamed:

Pls dont mind me hijacking this thread, but my dad will be in dubai this friday and i myself am looking for a sub20k digicam.
Any ideas if the S3-IS be available in that range?
If its not then ill probably go for the sony w100 (8mp, 3x, 1/1.8").

As for the primary purpose of this thread, i dont think buying a digicam to use as a substitute for a vidcam is advisable since the maximum recording u get will be in the 9m-12m range at hi-q (640x480, 30fps, 1GB mem)

hmm i dont mind u using my thread...but u all r getting it the other way..i am not asking for a digicam. with vid capabilities..but its the otherway...i need a handycam with good still photos says 4-5 mp separately for still photos in a handycam...which i ve found is rare....

^^ Well even the JVC suggested by rishia is 3ccd. Main diff between the two is that Panasonic is mini-dv, while JVC has a 30gb hard disk.

Trying to get a handycam to shoot stills is crazy... absolute crazy. He has a decent budget. He can squeeze in a nice HD handycam and also a point and shoot in that budget. Try getting a decent one that does its job for both rather than getting a jack of all trades and master of none :P.

thats what i am trying to make him understand,

any specific models..u would like to suggest.....??

Get a cheap P&S like Canon SD600/630 and whatever camcorder others suggest. I have no idea about camcorders.

Thats correct. Stills from camcorder are not comparable to even basic p&s. If you have option, better save money on camcorder only model rather than getting camcorder with still pcitures functionality. You may also want to read few reviews at camcorderinfo befor making your final purchase (camcorderinfo website occasionaly blamed to be slightly biased towards few brands so use your own judgement).

HD option is definately a good option but not worth the price at this moment. I would still suggest camcorder based on miniDV.
