Hi Guys,

A friend of mine needs a PC for home use. Basically for surfing and some MS Office (Word/Excel) stuff. Budget is 20K. INR. :D

Within that is required the whole shebang; namely the processor, mobo, monitor (preferably LCD), case, PSU, DVD writer, keyboard/mouse, HDD and RAM (I think 2GB's enuf, no?).

GPU/speakers not required. Emphasis on basic home use, so no high end stuff required. Combo deals where possible (such as Cabby+PSU) preferred, since they're often cheaper. Cheap but decent performance please. :D

Oh and am in Delhi, if that helps. :D

Thanks in advance for your help! :)

IMO.

Monitor - samsung/dell 19" ~ 7.5k (17" wide monitors are too small)

rest as above mentioned.

do take 500gb hdd, and 19" monitor even if you have to increase the budget a little. no point in taking 17" LCD.

Thanks for your suggestions but a 500 GB HDD will be overkill for my friend. Like I said, basic home use. And I mean very basic. I was initially thinking 160 GB but now that I think abt it, 320 is the sweet spot and will prolly be enough for now and a few years to come, knowing the usage it's gonna get. :D Plus it's the little extras here and there that eventually took my i7 rig way out of budget and this one's a strict limitation to 20K.

I too was thinking in terms of a 19" LCD but budget is budget. So unless someone can suggest a cheaper 19" (or something else where I can save a grand and add that to the monitor price), 17" it is. :D

No need for a 4.5k motherboard for such a basic system

3300 Processor: Intel E5200

2500 Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-G31-S2L

1200 RAM: Transcend 2GB DDR2 800 MHz

2100 HDD: WD 250GB SATA

1700 Cabinet: Zebronics Bijli ATX w/ bundled 400W SMPS

1100 Optical Drive: LG/Samsung/any

500 Speakers: Creative 245

7000 Monitor: 19" wide

500 Logitech KB+mouse

19900 total

Above combo is good. But I think the Athlon II will be better

Athlon II X2 240 -> 3000/-

Gigabyte nVIDIA chipset based mobo ( AM3 ready) -> 2100/-

Also the zebby bijli with the 400W SMPS shouldn't cost more than 1550/-.

If your going to buy an AMD rig, then dont go for the asus M3A78EM. Its crap. I used it and returned it within 2 days.

It delays in installing software, etc. If you want to test it u can do it with vista bootable dvd.

Just insert vista bootable dvd in ur pc with M3a78em and M3n78em. You can clearly see the difference. It will take much time in the ATI version. Also in installing apps like ms office, adobe, etc, etc., lot of difference.

In the beggining there are lot of issues in the nvidia version of this board. Now everything is sorted out and the M3N78EM is much much better than M3A78EM.

So stay away from M3A78EM if ur going for AMD....

Wow, none of what you said alarms me. Cause my M3A78 works flawlessly not to forget it's got easy BIOS tweaking functions. May be the board you had some problems. I haven't used a m3n78-em can you tell me what advantages its got over m3a78-em?

2500 Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-G31-S2L

G31? My friend's got it,he will always regret buying that Mobo. He uses his PC for downloading and if its on for more than 24 hours then the system turns off automatically and the Onboard GPU sucks so badly, even though he doesn't need it M3A78-em got DVI,HDMI,VGA which g31 Can't compete. At least he can watch HD vids without any problem.

Well, just had a look in this link, not much difference bettween a M3A78 and m3n78,except the Onboard GPU

AII 240: 3.3k

Biostar 785G: 3.6k

2GB DDR2 800 Transcend/Kingston: 1.3k

Zebby cabby w 450W PSU: 1.2k

500GB HDD: 2.5k

MS/Logitech MM combo: 0.7k

Samsung DVDRW 22X sata: 1.2k

Dell 19" Wide: 6.6k

total 20.4k

That mobo is rock solid for its price. It has got lots of power saving options, which switches phases to CPU on the fly in accordance with loads along with the CnQ for better power efficiency. It has the best IGP ever with DX 10.1.

UPDATE: My friend would like to buy the setup on installments. Anyone know a shop in Nehru Place that'd be willing to do that? On second thought, is that even possible? :D

its the bank which handles it. The shopkeeper will get full payment from bank thru u as a cheque. The interest will be some 1~2k according to the no. of installments and periods. 99% of shopkeepers will agree to that as there is nothin diff on their perspective. They get full amount in time, but thru cheque[which is the only difference].

You ll have to procure a price quotation with shop name and seal for applying for the installments thru bank.
