Hey Guys

My college is gonna hold its annual tech symposium in which there is a LAN gaming event. I was wondering what kind of format would work well. There's gonna be 100 participants max. and the basic idea is to have two rounds. One prelims and selecting 10 members with max. frags (Top 10). Now the last round is where I'm at a blank. What would work well?

Knockout among 10? Ending with a one-on-one?
Another group match?

Any suggestions from experienced players/anybody is welcome.

P.S: College has crappy Pentium D computers so CS is my only option. :(

Yeah the crappy comps are a problem . . after organizing more than 10 CS tourneys in school and college. . i can say that " I have been there and done that":S

By your post i Gather that you are planning on a one v one batlle and not team based combat ( WTF ? ) . . CS is hardly the game to do such a thing.

If you want head to head battles and keeping your config in mind, i would suggest :

1. Unreal Tournament
2. Quake 3
3. HL : DM

I played once in CS even which was 1 v 1 instead of team. . they took the highest frags in each team in 4-5 rounds. . made us play aztecworld or something. .AND believe me it sux !

So if you decide not to go for CLAN format. . the format you have suggested is the only option . . unless you want to make teams [ mix them up as per rank] and group the final 10 into clans of 5 each . . then you can have a best of 3 tie. . .

You'll then have a winner team. . then you can just round them up in a boat and beat the hell out each and every one of them. . whoever survives : WINS
-solly

PS : Yeah , I know i got distracted :(. Ignore the last para :ashamed:

Hey Iota thanks for your suggestions we are gonna do cs condition zero and i have never hosted a lan gaming even can you gimme a standard format which i can follow ?

ima sorry can you ellaborate please ?

YOU ARE SERIOUS RITE ? :S

Anyways. . let me tell you why your plan doesn't work.

#1 : CS is a team based game. With team based objectives , even if played on maps which are just meant to kill with no objectives as such, you still require team work.

#2 : The higher frags qualify thing doesnt work : THe stronger team will always haev more frags . . the weaker team inspite of having a stronger player will have lesser frags , which will not be his fault and will be out of his contorl.

#3 : Serious CS gamers will take you by the throat when they see this format being the BRATS they are usually. So I would suggest : AVOID this !!!
Also is the game lags . .revert back to CS 1.6 [ Vanila] and not CZ
HERE IS THE FORMAT :

1. You invite registrations for CLANS and not individual players. Teams can be of 3, 4, or 5 players [ Standard being 5].

2. You pit clans against each other. Now depending on no of teams and the time available you decide no of rounds per match.

3. Knock out format as usual . . untill you reach top 3 or 4 or 5 and then you can round robin between the teams.

^OMG nice advice iotay! He is right and you don't have to look anywhere else. One more advise from my side. The clans that come, and especially the good ones, are composed of players who will try to take over the whole process. You know, establish their territory kind of stuff. And the higher you keep the prize money, more you will attract such buffoons.

So, keep one dominating person, more specifically who doesn't know about the importance of being "pro" in CS. :P He should be handling all the clans and take the queries. The queries should be answered by you and the guys who know about CS, but he should be interacting with them. So they know who is in charge. And secondly, make a detailed set of rules and stick by them. Don't allow any changes unless the rule created by you is unreasonable to begin with.

Lastly, invite only clans. No "1 vs 1" or "2 vs 2" please!

Thanks a lot Iota Sei for your brillliant sugesstions and iota thats the initial plan i had the problem is the price money the 1st price is gonna be 750 and the second is gonna be 500 :S so i guess it has to be a team of 3

Sorry Coudnt HELP IT !

My Final Advise : Go for HL DM .

my 2 cents

1. do not start to organize a game u don't have a good idea about. 1v1 or 2v2 just doesn't work in CS. pick a game which u know well or find sum1 who knows the game well who can guide u to make the rules and setup the systems

2. once u have setup the system plz play a few rounds with ur friends etc and chk that it is working smoothly. i once went to a college to play nfs and found that their systems were crappy with 5-10 frames per second

others have suggested well enough on how to conduct the competition...
