Hi,

Could you guys give some nice suggestions for lounge music.

BTW i was browsing at one of PlanetM outlets and i came across CDs of - BUDDHA BAR III, IV ...... these double CD packs are priced at a whooping 2999/- bucks . what the hell? whats the reason for such pricing. r the CD's gold plated or what...

Go for any Theivery corporation , Jazznova , Boozou Bajou , Sofa Surfers , The Funky Lowlives , Jazzamor , Moca .

Some of the stuff is hard to get on cds here but there are always other ways to addquire them so :D

Yanni is good for lounge music, but it depends on ur taste. :)

Yanni is new age, not loungey at all.

Buddha bar is fine but it was very ethnic in earlier series.

There are many artists to check out, its easier to go with compilations for example. I distinguish between lounge as being more evening like and cafe more afternoon like. The comps or va's usually have lots of good tracks by various artists and are well mixed so there is more of a loungey feel, harder for individual artists to compete head on but there a re a few exceptions.

Some good comp albums if you can get hold of them
rendezvous lounge vol.1
savannah beach club vol.1
supperclub presents lounge vol.2,6
lounge deluxe vol.2, 3,4 (by monte la rue)
latin deluxe vol.2 (by monte la rue)
deluxe vol.1,2,3 (by monte la rue)
cafe abstrait vol.2 (rapahael marrionneau)
the afterlife lounge
Saint germain pres de cafe (vol. 2 & 5)
om lounge vol.5, 6, 7
mushroom jazz vol.1,2
hi-fidelity lounge vol.2, 3
nordic lounge vol.2
the rhythm lounge vol.4
lounge story vol.2

by artists
desansis - slow feed
praful - one day deep
fragmentorchestra - fragmentorchestra
the lithium project - passo fundo

Ones above are in the top 15% in the genre for me.

There are many comps out there with the name lounge on them, not all are made equal.

Gotan project..its revancha del tango, their first album you want to get, but its different than lounge i feel. Certainly excellent tho.

Achillea, Jens Gad, Secret Garden, Blue Stone, David Arkenstone, Delerium, F.r.u.e.d, Mythos, Deep Forest etc.

This is right up my alley, some of my favorite kind of music :) I am another huge Thievery Corporation Fan, (saw them in concert in San Francisco) On a similar vein of music, check out these:

Kruder and Dorfmeister (been around for a long time and are lounge favorites all over the world)

Nightmares on Wax (awesome lounge, also check out solo stuff by Wax Taylor)

Hotel Costes (Great compilation cd's, there are now 9 of them produced by a French DJ called Stephane Pompougnac)

Essential Chillout Lounge (Another cd compilation by dj's, also has a number of disks available)

Cafe Ibiza Chillout Lounge (Compilation Vol 1-9)

Café del Mar (Compilation Vol 1-14)

OM Lounge (Om is a very well known label that puts out some of the best dj's worldwide (used to have a monthly party here in SF, bummer it's not on anymore))

New Bohemians (not exactly lounge, but also nive and chill to listen to)

Dub Syndicate (not lounge but very chill to listen to)

Swayzak (almost a little too chill for me)

Mark Farina (I wouldn't definitely not call him lounge... more housy overall, but but also has a lot of chill electro beats. One that he is very famous for is Mushroom Jazz, an awesome cd.)

Massive Attack (Usually very chill, but not exactly lounge. A really awesome group of artists, up there in all time favorites for me)

Aslo check out the DJ Kicks series of cd's put out by all different artists, some are chill and others are not... I would say that the majority of the early ones are pretty chill though.

I just got the DJ Kicks put out by Daddy-G (He is one of the musicians in Massive Attack) this is a great cd.

Enjoy
:)

when i think of lounge, i think one of those fancy bars that play non-trance or ambient music. Ppl in these places are not usually ravers, they might not even like rave. You might be warming up to go to a club or you might be unwinding from a long day's work and having a few b4 getting back home. So the music is stimulating, not emotional, slightly dancey but not quite there either.

Ambient & ambient trance are what i expect to hear in a chillout room, when you are coming down from a high energy event, ie most likely early morning, you will be going to sleep soon. More downbeat acts like Boards of Canada, Brian Eno, cafe del mar and its derivatives, Blue Stone, Deep Forest, Delerium, F.r.e.u.d, Jens Gad, Mythos, and tons of other slower electronic music.

New age or meditational is more for the health spas kind of environment or private consumption at home as opposed to a public lounge. Think healing. Acts like Secret Garden, David Arkenstone (most of his stuff is on the Narada label that does a lot of this).

These are just general observations, it can get fuzzy especially with artists that don't like being labelled.

A very good observation :) A very hard thing to discern, it also depends on what you really mean by lounge music. My suggestions above are not all technically speaking lounge music (some are) :) but are on the chiller side of listening.

Old style lounge music could be older crooners like Louie Austen, Frank Sinatra etc..... but perhaps being a little more specific could be helpful.

Ahh..i must have missed your post, i'm in general agreement with your list, my criteria was is it more for a public place or at home. It's hard to put down more a feel. I purposely left out the hotel costes comps since i felt they were little more private or intimate. Tho conceivably they are for the bar in the hotel costes in paris. Picks for these would be vols, 1,2,4..ran a little bit out of steam in the later versions, not necessarily bad but not as good as the earlier ones.

Some of the artists quoted do have loungier tracks but Nightmares on Wax or Thievery corp to me are more trip-hop than lounge, the comps by their label, ESL maybe hit closer. K& D pioneered the austrian downtempo scene, Tosca took it further, again little more private i think. I made an exception for Farina's mushroom jazz series, all of them are great i listed my picks of the lot. DJ Kicks is bit of a mixed bag, Daddy g's from massive attack i enjoyed. Again massive attack is fantastic trip-hop especially their first 2 albums. Swayzak was more deep prog house in the early days, getting more electronic nowadays. Faster than lounge but could be mixed in with care.

If i had to pick an artist or comp that got very close to the lounge sound & feel it would be by the belgian, monte la rue. Class act!

Thanks for the tip, I don't know this.. but it is obvious from our previous posts on TE that we have a lot of similar tastes in music, so I look forward to checking this out ... thanks :)
