I want to get a new system [Excluding monitor/speakers etc] under Rs.20K.Major requirements being applications for programming & moderate gaming.
Q: What is your budget?
20k

Q: Which hardware will you be keeping (component name - component brand and model)
ViewSonic 17 inches monitor Resolution 1440*900
Creative Inspire 2,1 speakers
Usual mouse + keyboards

Q: Which hardware component are you looking to buy (component name). If you have already decided on a configuration then please mention the (component brand and model) as well, this will help us in fine tuning your requirement.
Processor-----Inter core I3----Rs.5450
Motherboard------Not sure--Biostar---Rs.2650
RAM------4GB Transcend---Rs.1150
Hard Disk----1TB Western Digital--Rs.2650
Cabinet--Model not sure--Rs 800/1200
DVD Writer---LG---Rs. 950
Graphic Card---Nvidia 1GB[not sure on the series maybe 8400GS]---Rs. 1900

Now all that sums of for 16000 excluding vat

Q: Is this going to be your final configuration or you would be adding/upgrading a component in near future. If yes then please mention when and which component
No, will not upgrade the following within 6 months/possibly next 2 years

Q: Where will you buy this hardware? (Online/City/TE Dealer)
Hyderabad

Q: Would you consider buying a second hand hardware from the TE market
No

Q: What is your intended use for this PC/hardware
Gaming
Browsing
Desktop Processing
Download rig, 12 hours per day
Programmin[Java etc]

Q: Do you have any brand preference or dislike? Please name them and the reason for your preference/dislike.
Prefer Intel over AMD

Q: If you will be playing games then which type of games will you be playing?
Not fixated--Prefer games like Prince of Persia series

Q: What is your preferred monitor resolution for gaming and normal usage
Gaming - which works well
Desktop - 1440x900

Q: Are you looking to overclock?
No

Q: Which operating system do you intend to use with this configuration?
Windows 7 64 bit
Linux - Not sure[Most probably UBUNTU]

Now the major thing is whether this graphic card is fine or should I go for a better one.
If not should I go for intel Core I5 with the same graphic card

Sire, you are in a really mismatched state of mind, here is a configuration that'll suit you --

Intel Core i3 2100 ~ 5500/-
Intel DH67-BL ~ 5200/-
Corsair ValueRAM 1333MHz 4GB x 1 ~ 1200/-
Seagate Barracuda 7200.12 500GB / 1TB ~ 1900/- OR 2800/-
Sapphire HD 6670 ~ 5500/-
Cooler Master eLite 370 ~ 1900/-
Corsair CX V2 430W OR FSP Saga II 500W ~ 2200/- OR 2500/-
Samsung / LG OEM DVD drive ~ 950/-

Hope this helps, Sire. Cheers!!

A few questions --

Why a distrust towards AMD products? The AMD Llano is a juicy proposition in your price category.

The nVidia GS 8400GT is an anciet card, released 2007. The much recently released HD 6670 will serve you for atleast two years with games running @HD + low settings. And in graphics card don't go by the marketing spiel of higher performance due to more amount of V-RAM.

I wouldn't exactly say it's dstrust towards AMD but rather a preference when I think of longevity..Intel processors usually hold out for a longer time period when compared to AMD products but I guess I am not too fixated on this.

But do you think it's necessary for the rest of the config to get a Intel DH67-BL ~ 5200/-..Won't a Gigabyte GA-H61M-D2-B3 ~3300 serve my requirements enough.

So my updated[if I can say that] config I will try out will be

Intel Core i3 2100 ~ 5500/-
Corsair ValueRAM 1333MHz 4GB x 1 ~ 1200/-
Seagate Barracuda 7200.12 1TB ~ 2800/-
Samsung / LG OEM DVD drive ~ 950/-
These four for sure
Cooler Master eLite 370 ~ 1900/-
Corsair CX V2 430W OR FSP Saga II 500W ~ 2200/- OR 2500/-
Sapphire HD 6670 ~ 5500/-
Now I will most probably go with these but might change.

Now want to consider the other options when it comes to a motherboard & graphic card

For your monitor the min. I would recommend for a GPU is HD6570 1GB DDR3 ~ 3.8k or HD5670 512MB GDDR5 ~ 4k.
Now let's say I go with Gigabyte GA-H61M-D2-B3 ~3300 as a motherboard with
Intel Core i3 2100 ~ 5500/-
Corsair ValueRAM 1333MHz 4GB x 1 ~ 1200/-
Seagate Barracuda 7200.12 1TB ~ 2800/-
Samsung / LG OEM DVD drive ~ 950/-.

Could you suggest a graphic card under 5k which would fit that config & serve my purpose or should I fix on Sapphire HD 6670 ~ 5500/-

The Intel DH67-BL motherboard has a much better base chipset the H67 which supports most of the features like USB 3.0 and SATA III out-of-the-box, while the H61 based offerings rely on third party chips, so that is why I refered Intel, also it has got good coverage here in TE.

Don't skimp on the SMPS get a decent reputed one from Corsair OR FSP. Any of the models I suggested OR DarkAngel Sire has put forth will do.

The AMD HD 6670 ~ 5500/- is a good entry-level card which can run most games and unload the task of decoding-HD content from the processor, couple that with a low TDP and you have a winner in your hands. AMD Radeon HD 6670 1 GB Review - Page 1/26 | techPowerUp

Hope this helps, Sire. Cheers!!

Thanks a lot Alpha17.

I will go with the config you suggested but if my budget increases I might go with Radeon HD 5770 instead of 6670. I guess the rate will be 6500/-..So is HD 5770 the best choice at that rate.

^^ If you are gunning for the HD 5770 might as well spend a little more and get the more mature HD 6770 ~ 10% improvement across the board from the same Cypress chip.

Well, got my system[It's been some 20 days actually]. Really pleased with the performance now. Once again,Thanks a lot alpha17 & darkangel.

Now,,my friend is also taking a new cpu.The budget range is similar to mine.Add a little more to it. I suggested the same config that was suggested to me.So

Q: Which hardware component are you looking to buy

Intel Core i3 2100 ~ 5500/-

Intel DH67-BL ~ 5200/- or a Gigabyte GA-H61M-D2-B3 ~3300

Corsair ValueRAM 1333MHz 4GB x 1 ~ 1200/-

Samsung / LG OEM DVD drive ~ 950/-

Cooler Master eLite 370 ~ 1900/-

Corsair CX V2 430W OR FSP Saga II 500W ~ 2200/- OR 2500/-

Radeon HD 6770 ~ 6700/-

He already has a 500GB WD HDD[Well saved from the rise in prices:hap2:]

But he wants to get a Intel core i5 2500/2400 instead of Intel core i3 2100

Now his requirements are similar to mine[Mostly gaming - asassins's creed, pop, gta, crysis etc] & he is on a strictly tight budget[may barely make it if it's core i5]

I know that core i5 offer 4 cores without hyper threading compared to the 2 cores of i3 with hyper threading.

So should he take core i5 or will i3 be more than enough for his requirements.

^^ Tell him to get this processor, if he wants a quad-core -- Intel Core i5 2320 TheITWares - One Stop for all Gizmos!Intel Core i5 2320 Sandy Bridge 3.0GHz (3.3GHz Turbo Boost) 4 x 256KB L2 Cache 6MB L3 Cache LGA 1155 95W Quad-Core Desktop Processor BX80623I52320, if budget constricts him the Core i3 2100 is not half as bad.

See performance depends on tasks, somewhere HT will be better while else-where the native quad-core architecture is a boon, so it is a compromise situation, your friend has to decide, if he is only going to game a lot and rest day-to-day tasks [torrenting, spreadsheets et al], then a Core i3 2100 will do. Else grab the Core i5 as it'll help in the applications like Autodesk MAYA, Z-Brush and so on.

Hope this clears things up, Sire.

Hmmm...well for my friend everything changed the moment he stepped into the shop.:S

The seller at the shop deeply suggested AMD Phenom II X4 3.2Ghz processor as he said that it would be nice mix b/w gaming & tasks as it's also a quad core processor & my friend went with it.[Funny what a good salesman can do]

He got the HD 6770 gpu & Cooler Master Elite Power RS 460--460 Watts with a cooler master elite cabinet[not sure on the model]

Mother board is digilite[Not sure on the model again]

Motherboard cost him Rs. 3000/-

CPU-Rs 6000

So is it a good enough processor?I know he can't change it now but atleast I will know what to expect of this combination.

@pshankarc

I bought a system today with AMD Phenom II X4 955 3.2Ghz(Rs.5850) + Digilite 760G series(Rs.2650)..

I can play all decent games.. As of now system response and speed is very very good.. Need to check how it will perform in the long term..

which proccy did he buy,if it's phenom ii x4 955be then it's a great deal.

Yeah it's Phenom II X4 955BE

Gaming performance is fine.

Multitasking is a big disappointment considering it's a quad core processor.Well can't expect everything at this price range I suppose
