Hi!
i've finally managed to get some cash and these are the two things confusing me to death!!
(1)asus k40in----rs.41000
intel t6600 ---2.2 ghz
4gb ddr ram
nvidia g102m --512mb dedicated video card
320gb hdd
14.1inch screen
i have held it and studied it closely! i would give it 8.5/10 -very good build quality however i could slightly bend the lcd screen panel--not as much as dell inspirion and the vostro-1088/1014.but this laptop is very light.

(2)sony vaio cw 15---rs.41000
intel t6670--2.26ghz
2gb DDR3 ram
nvidia g210m--256mb dedicated video card
250gb hdd
14.1inch screen
This one has better build quality and the screen doesn't bend with pressure.i would give it 9/10
if i add 3000rs i would get a 4gb of ddr3 ram(now that brings up the total to 44000rs) and it is not as light as the asus k-40in.

which one do i buy??
also would these laptops support intel's V-pro virtualization software.....windows 7 xp mode???

what about 256mb of vram vs 512mb vram and 250gb vs 320gb???

the cpu speed is marginally better 2.2ghz vs 2.26ghz

also the asus comes with 2years of warranty and the sony with one year and i would have to pay 4000rs extra for 2 years of warranty!

there has to be some trade-off achieved!! If win xp feature in win 7 a must then u need to go with procy which support V-mode in this case it would be sony.

Having ddr3 ram would make SOME impact on speed but not that much.

So now its ur call, whether u want a lappy with good built vs performance.

If i was in ur place, would go for sony.

Regarding hdd, external's are quite affordable so u can get one when u run out of space.

this is the final chart!!!

Finally I’ve got my salary and I am totally confused with what to buy for myself! The problem with Dell is its 10—14 day waiting period – I need to buy the laptop by next Wednesday. The problem with Sony is its cost to upgrade to an additional 2gb of ddr3 ram @ 3000rs and then to extend its warranty to 2 more years i would have to pay 5000rs more –the same goes for dell (extended warranty @ 8000rs). I already have windows 7 which i can use so the OS is not an issue. Virtualization support would be good but i can live without it.

All three laptops have excellent build quality----personally checked them. The question is what to buy??

Will be buying a sony(black and burgundy coloured) laptop back pack –way better than samsonite or targus @ 3000rs (that would be another extra to add to my cost)

Between Asus and Sony personally I would prefer Asus as their long-term build quality seems to be better. This is based on using their smartphones (which seem to be tougher than Nokias when it comes to abuse-handling!), but I suppose one could extend this to their hardware in general? Their mobos have been good to me as well..

Sony hardware OTOH has crapped out on me happily, and every time just a couple of weeks out of the warranty period. Methinks their warranty numbers is the same as their hardware MTTF :D

And given your last post, I would think Asus is the way to go. Be sure to test out the laptops for usage comfort before buying though..

At that price point, Asus would be tough to beat.

Their build quality and warranty terms are also very solid. I am not sure about their service though in India.

dont buy asus btw asus ship with low profile gpu card g102 only that is awful

better get sony with 210gt ddr3 or u can find dell studio 14 for 45k come with ati 4670 :)

my usage will not include gaming of any sort---i intend to use it for my own profesional usage and that does not include gaming!!!!

watching movies(720p/1080p),php.net,a bit of ruby which i am learning, vmware photoshop and few other presentation tools and linux(red hat enterprise 5)

so the video card needs to be a dedicated card but not a very powerful one i need good battery life -- also portability matters to me since i would travel a lot.

From portability point of view, 14.1 " screen laptops would weigh more than 2.5Kgs. Not very portable, I guess. Any idea, what are weights of these lappies like?

Asus lappies come with Accidental damage protections. IDK if you get that with Sony and for Dell you gotta pay extra

came across this samsung r470 @ 38,000

specs are

intel t6600@ 2.2ghz

3gb ddr2 667

320gb hdd

nvidia g210 -- 512mb mb vram

14.1 inch

1 year warranty

anyone has experiences with samsung laptops?

the samsung and sony have better video cards compared to asus but on upgrading the samsung with an extra 1 gb of ram and minus the 2 year warranty that asus offers they are pretty much the same.

As per the review from the above posted link(ASUS), it doesnt have HDMI? Suppose if you want to connect to big screen TV's for watching HD movies, is it not important?

no i dont need to connect my laptop to anything other than maybe a projector or another lcd/monitor
