Rockbox firmware brings new life and features to Apple's iPod

CNET has posted its thoughts on Rockbox, an open source firmware replacement. Rockbox supports a variety of different players from Archos, iRiver, Apple, and iAudio. The firmware is updated on a daily basis and developed by everyday users of the devices. The CNET article looks at the Rockbox iPod firmware particularly.

^Juast installed it on 30GB video. Have been running daily builds on my iRiver for the last 6-7 months now. Excellent sound quality, sparse interface.. OGG and FLAC + gapless = excellent. No video playback though.. hey, there is a dual-boot option as well. Now only if they add support for the Creative Zen Vision : M.. I'm golden!

Yeah.. better format support (OGG, FLAC), better features - gapless playback, graphic equaliser..

OMG!!! Graphic equaliser?? But that is already there with the ipod right?? Will this give me an option of Customising an equaliser(like on the iriver)???

and what is gapless playback?

Wrong.The iPod only has eq presets.. you can't adjust frequency bands manually.. which you CAN if you use Rockbox. Therefore yeah.. customising EQ is possible.

As for gapless playback.. I'll let Wikipedia and a few other sources explain:

I know :) .... I have an ipod... I had an iriver earlier and I miss the customisable EQ in the ipod... that is why I asked if this special firmware allows me to have a customisable EQ for the ipod :) ....

Installed it and then uninstalled it on my Ipod mini...

dont worry nothing wrong with it...its just tht i was tryin to see if it wrks or not...will install it alongwith all the plugins and all after my exams...

Though i loved the changed lookd :D

wish we could play anything outta the box on the ipod vid 30gb like teh creative zen vision M does,its so crappy encoding vids to mp4 for ipod :p
