I saw this on net and felt awfully familiar....wait a minute, its our Lead Admin or is it :bleh: :bleh: :bleh:

There are millions of meteors traveling at amazing speeds through the universe, the chance of one hitting earth on a daily basis is 0.034%

Have a nice day :D

thats meteors. not supernovas :P

supernovas happen, u can see the aftereffects of a supernova in brihgt daylight :S

So thats a probabilty of 12.41 % hitting the earth per year. In that case one should hit earth every 9 years !!!

Are you sure you got the figures right.

@aces: Man u really need to get some tution in probability .when u flip a coin there is .50 probability of gettin heads then that doesnt mean u get heads for every 2 flips . :bleh: :bleh: :bleh:

@Sunny: I dont have the site i got the pic from but it is a supernova.

Technically its close to getting 1 head every 2 flips. So taking that unceratainty one meteor should hit earth atleast once in 12 years.

i think supervnova means the termination of stars :|
i gess dat dis is the pic of supernova

No offence but Technically gettin 1 head every 2 flips is 3/4 , for 3 flips its 7/8 and so on but never reaches one.
What i am tryin to say is that probability doesnt really gaurantee the occurence of the event but only gives an idea of the chance of occurence.

Neways...

In either case most meteors that do make it to the earth arent large enough. They get completely burnt up before they reach the surface of the earth due to the high amount of heat produced during entry into the earth's atmosphere.
If its a really really big meteor, thats when you should be worried. Armageddon anyone? ;)

Thats the point aces is trying to make as well, the fact of a meteor hitting the earth every 9 (or 12) years is only to give an idea of how often it would hit on a regular basis to correspond with the percentage you gave.
Ofcourse the probability of the probability being 100% accurate is almost zero, as maybe 2 meteors will hit the earth in one 9 year period, while none will hit in the next, but overall its stil 1 meteor hitting the earth every 9 years.

hey what are you guys discussing about me :ohyeah:

thats what it is btw.. a probability based on past stats.
you cannot ofcourse guarantee that an occurence will occur just by past stats as the sample space is not completely defiined(you are talking universe here and there are lots of unknown) So what you have is technically is an "estimate" based on stats known to us or on the conditions we know about. Which at any rate are very limited as of now.

So making any statement on the hit rate so as to say and predicting so is not exactly a grt idea. Having said that meteors continuously strike the earth all the time(meteorite) which are small enough not to make much of an impact... so that estimate of daily one might be correct. Having said that even the best estimates of a mjor catastrpgic collisions with us are very minute.

Does that mean for every decision I make, there are infinite clones of me accountable for every micro second right from my conception to my death?

Yes that and more, because according to that theory you might have not even been born, you might have died earlier too, its an endless string.

you are in some parallel universe :ohyeah:
in some other parallel uni i am the king of the world right now :P .. why am i living in this uni then :P

Btw good point which is philosophical is what would be the human beings brain or the sense of being me be there in that uni? Frankly i don't exactly like this idea too much but then i never liked the big bang theory and the whole idea of singularity that much either. 13d space is kinda beeyond our comprehension(as string theory proposes.) what with the membranes colliding and big bangs occuring...and i remember this theory was invented or actually cracked when 3 scientists were travelling to london on a train to see a drama... lol... talk about serendipity.
