my brain did the thinking
<
thanks for the appreciation

Nice work with the pipes
<
.

You could have use recyclable velcro based ties for cord binding, they'll cost less and wont be a PIA every time one has to clean hi/her PC.

Piping is a pretty common thing people do, it looks good but you over-did it. And if those are plumbing wala-pipes they're prone to static and in a case of shorting of power supply/cables these pipes will immediately melt and catch fire, that's the reason why people use cable manager ties made for cord binding. @Chaoseater

Is that by any chance one of the KMD modded CM690Gs ?

Nice work, it would have looked even better with both before and after pics.

MY ENTRY INTO THE CONTEST:

A well Spent and well deserved Sunday. After six months, I lay my hands to clean the whole Setup. Here it is

aman bro .. i was just thinking of cable management and then piping came to my mind .. i had no clue about it ..

in the front it looks clean but with non modular power supply .. managing cable is quite hectic (ill make sure i get a modular psu ASAP)

i just went to h/w store and got 3 pipes and small cable ties .. then had to go again to purchase larger pipes (ie i had no clue what i was about to do)

velcro based ties never heard of it
<

and the pic of the pipe u posted above .. saw it for the 1st time

i was thinking of making it neat .. like using the spiral cable of landline telephones .. but that would have been messy .. and with the amount of cables it had to be messy at the back with the pipes .. well the largest pipe you see at the back .. theres 1 small pipe inside it
<
.. ill post 1 pic of the backside of my pc to show how it is normally

My entry to the competition [BLUE EYED MONSTER y'all
<
] :

http://s1253.photobu...mview=slideshow

44 Photos in the above album.

I am an avid reader on TE, I don't post much but I'm a very good and loyal follower of TE.

Each and every method that I've learnt on taking care of my desktop has come from TE. So thank you TE and TE'ians in advance.

I clean my BLUE EYED MONSTER after every 6 months, this cleaning includes removing the dust completely, cleaning of connectors with IPA(iso-propyl-alcohol),thorough cleaning of HSFs(GPU + CPU) and reapplication of TIM. Recent dust storms in Mumbai
<
and the TE Clean and Clear contest have forced me to clean my PC 1 month in advance of my schedule.

AIM : Cleaning, restoration, servicing and cable-management of a dirty desktop.

APPARATUS :
 • Complete Desktop, Camera and an Internet connection.
 • Cleaning Hardware : Iso-Propyl-Alcohol(PCB Cleaner), Water, Cotton Swabs, different assortment of brush, Chamois Cloth and Micro-Fibre Cloth.
 • Servicing : ANTI-STATIC BAND(very important), Plastic lock cable ties, Velcro reusable Cable Ties, electrical insulation pipe(for neater cable management), Arctic Cooling MX-2 Thermal Interface Material, 2T-engine oil(for oiling fans) and Taparia-screw driver set.

Theory :

Configuration of Desktop :

Processor : AMD PHENOM-II BE-550(UNLOCKED X4)

 • -1 X CM120MM 50CFM BLUE LED

 • -1 X SCYTHE SLIPSTREAM 77CFM

 • -1 X DRAGOON 120MM 65CFM BLUE LED

Furniture : STUDY CUSTOM TABLE(old is gold
<
)

Procedure :

1. Tie Anti-Static Band to your right hand.

2. Power off the Desktop and turn the mains off, repeatedly press the power bottom to discharge any residual power left inside the electrical/electronic components.

3. Detach and disconnect each and every component of the desktop.

4. Clean the entire table, Speaker system, Modem, Mouse, external wires and Monitor with dry cloth and then follow it up with soapy-wet cloth.

5. Remove each and every key of the keyboard with a key remover or a strong pin(carefully). Wash all the keys with detergent as no other mild cleaning agent will work on it properly. Let it dry, clean the keyboard body properly with brush and finish with its cleaning with chamois cloth. Reattach all the keys on the keyboard.

6. Remove all the fans, air filters, PSU, Optical Drives and Hard drives with bays/trays from the cabinet.

7. Clean the fans using some wet cloth and brush carefully without applying too much pressure on the blades.

8. Clean the air filters with brush and then wash then with only water.

9. Clean the HDD drives and bays carefully with dry chamois cloth.

10. Remove the motherboard, detach the RAM, Processor HSF and Graphics Card. Store them all in anti-static bags.

11. Take care off all the screws, store them all together clean them using a cloth and then use Kerosene to clean the rust(if rusting is present, in case of Mumbaikars YES), repaint the rusted screws and let them dry.

12. Remove the HSF from Graphics card and Processor and clean them both using a brush and then finish it off with IPA.

13. Clean the processor and GPU Chip using IPA & Micro fiber cloth, apply fresh TIM and attach now clean HSFs.

14. Clean all the electrical connections HDD SATA, GPU PCI-ex, various MOBO connectors etc.... with IPA.

15. Now dust the empty cabinet with a strong blower , then use a dry cloth for further dusting and apply IPA for cleaning of required connectors.

16. Now reattach everything inside the cabinet properly, apply all the ingenious techniques of cable management and screw tight all the components. Make sure you use more Velcro-based cable ties for it's easy removal and reusing characteristics.

17. Re-cable all the external connections, do proper cable management for them too.

15. Place all the components in the desired ergonomic positions and clean them all once more with moist chamois cloth and finish it with dry cloth.

16. Measure the new temperatures and reduced noise and reap the benefits for another 6-8 months.

Conclusion : Clean and Clear condition for the desktop has been achieved efficiently with minimum risk.

Reduction in temps :

Mobo - 5°C reduction(idle)

Processor - 5°C reduction(idle)

P.S. - The above write-up will help many newbees and it proves that one does not need an expensive rig or a modular power supply for good cable management.

Regards,

Naveen.

This is the link to my album.

Nice Job Naveen it's simple, precise and good explanation
<
. It can be used as a tutorial
<
.

@ ISHROCZ_14

Looks like it's popular with me and a few of my friends, it's usually used in commercial/server-environment and used only outside the cabby because it's pretty destructive if used inside. I've seen some branded machines with segmented pipes too.

im googling since yesterday for piped cabbys after cable management but i havent come across single link .. can you please pm me some of them

3 more days left and its a weekend too. Expecting more members to clean up their cabinets and post their entry here
<

Even i need to clean up my PC, long over due
<

I spent a day cleaning up what seemed to be the left behinds of a dust storm inside my PC . I spent another half day just trouble shooting " USB over current status detected - shut down in 15 seconds " . ( It was a a freaking tight screw on the motherboard
<
) and finally the remaining half day cleaning the desk and room to make it look awesome
<
.

All the pictures and guide to some neat cable management with just velcro and cable tipes , coming up soon
<
.

Here's my entry to the competition:

Steps I Took:

1. Unscrewed all the bolts of my mobo and took it out also the same goes for PSU.

2. then inserted the PSU with that 4PIN ATX cable cable going underneath it. Also most of the cables too. But the cables were too short as it is a cheap PSU.

3. I took all the cabinet cables(power, reset, sound, usb etc) and took them from behind where my mobo rests.

4. There is some place beneath my mobo i dunno how come. So i placed my cable such that a small turn of them was inside that free space beneath the mobo.

5. Screwed my mobo upon it then did all the placing.

6. Taped those who were coming out from the back side.

7. Tried placing the cables as much as i could.

EDIT - Useless lines and things removed.

MY ENTRY INTO THE CONTEST:

A well Spent and well deserved Sunday. After six months, I lay my hands to clean the whole Setup. Here it is

1. Had to literally dismatle every single Component of the Rig. This included even removing the CPU cooler and the fans. The cooler had accumulated pile of dust. First, I tried my luck with the Blower. All in Vain, was forced put the Cooler under high pressure water spray to loosen the dirt. Then, used a paint brush to Clean up the Cooler. Let the cooler alone in sun to dry. Meantime spent time cleaning all the fans with a wet cloth, then with a dry cloth. Then cleaned up the MoBo and the GPU. But could not do anything dust acculmulated near the GPU fan. Fixed up the CPU, MoBo, RAM,GPU & CPU Cooler.

DSC_0208Custom.jpg

2.Was plannin some MOD on the Cabinet, but work has kept me busy these days. Cleaning the Cabinet was seriously tasking. Used a blower for few mins. Couldn't stand the Dust. Dismantled all the electrical components. Used the water to clean up the whole cabinet with some soap and Brushes. Put it to dry in the balcony. This is the work of Water and Soap. Seriously
<

DSC_0217Custom.jpg

3. Spent all time in the evening fixing up the setup and routing the cables.

DSC_0237Custom.jpg

4. The MoBo CPU and most the wires were routed behind the Cabinet. Please do not forget this is the First Generation CM690 with Window which was Powder coated 6 months back. I hope CM690 owners know the pain in routing cable is. THe GPU Cable is routed between the Fan and Bottom Fan holder.

5. After spending a day long with few breaks suming up about 7-8 hours to clean everything and put it back to use.

@MODS: I had brief the process, so posting it once again as I am not able to edit the previous post.

So, heres my entry. All the cables in the cabinet have been sleeved individually. I re made the 6 Pin PCIE connectors, without heatshrink just last night. So was waiting to finish that before going ahead. A whole lot of cable clips have been used to get the cabling to this. Hope you guys like it. Things I have used:

1. Cable clips

2. M3 Screws to hold the cable clips. You may be able to see some of these in front of the bottom rad

3. MDPC sleeving, with and without heatshrink.

4. Lots of patience and planning

I was very tired after cleaning and clearing .. I couldn’t write the steps properly

For cable management ..

1. Switch off the power .. remove all the external wires like monitor .. mouse .. kb etc

2. Remove all wires .. Powersupply wires .. sata wires and extras like the fan wires present inside the cabinet .

3. Next remove the graphic card and the power supply.

4. Clean the cabby and slide the power supply back into its position without fixing.

5. Take out all the cables of the psu from the bottom most hole in the cabby and remove it from back.

6. Then notice the best ways to slide the PSU mobo power cable (24 pin conn) in such a way that free flowing air from the front and the top side of the cabinet is not obstructed and slide the mobo power cable to the nearest hole to the mobo slot in the cabby(which is meant for cable mgmt).

7. Attach the 8 pin cable to the top side of the mobo by sliding the cable through the nearest hole (meant for cable mgmt).

8. Now fix the power supply.

9. Attach the GPU to the mobo and attach the Pci E pin from the Psu to Gpu from the space present above the HARDISKs slots.

10. We now notice that at the back side of cabby we now need just 2 wires of PSU .. 1x3slot power supply for Hardisk and 1 power supply for the fans of Cabby.

11. We now attach the power supply cable to the 3 hard disks and tie the cables of psu to the cabby with the help of ties.

12. So now its time for pipes to come into the scene . We have 5 pipes ranging from 1 cm dia to 5 cm diameter ie 1cm, 2cm, 3cm, 4cm and 5cm all upto 1m in length.

13. We now take the smallest pipe to slide the power cables of the cabinet to the mobo ie POWER , RESTART, SPEAKER, LED etc etc . We cut the pipe approximately of the length of those wires. We then cut the pipe through the middle completely and put all the wires through it 1by1 as shown in Picture.

14. We then take the 2cm dia pipe and now we will use it for the front panel USB and Audio and other wires like Firewire (I have usb sound card so I wont be needing the audio wire. Just use wires that you need to keep it clean and lower the mess) We then slide the all the front panel cables through the pipes using the same technique in 13. We take out the usb cables in the bottom while we use another pipe for the cables we are not going to use. We slide the usb cables alongwith the START/RESTART pipe at the bottom side of the cabby.

15. We now attach the 3 sata cables for hardisks and make sure that we keep it alongside 24pin connector. If wires are together it keeps the cabby clean. Tie the ties wherever necessary.

16. Now take the 4cm dia pipe and cut it to the length of around 30 cms to hide the sata cable, Power Supply cable to the Hardisks and the front panel pipe which isn’t required(pipe inside a pipe)

17. We then slide the fan cables in the smallest pipes and fix it to the backside of the cabby.

18. Make sure that the SQUARE SPACE at the back of the cabby (area below processor) is empty, the wires and the pipes should not be present in that space.

19. Now the remaining PSU cables, take the 2 cm dia pipe and cut it into half semi circles (full pipes wont close the cabinet) and fix the cables on the cabby with the help of pipe and ties.

20. We notice that we cannot attach the ties at the right hand side at the back of cabby so we leave the fan wires as it is inside the gap at the bottom and right side of cabby.

21. We are almost done now but to make it look clean we will use 3 pipes in front side. We wont slide the cables through the pipes, we will just cut the pipes in such a way that it looks clean (more than a semi circle).

1 As seen in the pic we use biggest pipe which is customized for START/RESTART. We just put it on the cables and it can be removed easily within a sec.

2 We use another pipe for Gpu PCI E wire.

3 The last wire we use in the front is the 24 pin connector and the 3 sata cables.

total time taken for cable management .. Approx 5 hours .

materials used : Air pump, Cable Ties, Pipes.

CLEANING THE PC

firstly i removed all the connecting wires .. kept every h/w separate .. mouse .. kb .. monitor .. gpu .. hardisk .. psu .. motherboard !

i cleaned my Keyboard 1st which took hell lotta time as i removed every single button .. it was the 1st time i was cleaning the AW KB since i bought it from fellow te member .. i took around 3 hrs

then i cleaned my MX518 not that time consuming .. about 10-15 mins i guess .. washing the Razor mantis took 5 mins and then i hanged it up alongside clothes

well then i started cleaning my empty cabby in my balcony .. it was very dusty .. i took around 45 mins to clean the cabby .. the dirt around the fans is always difficult to clean inHAF 32

then after taking lunch break i poured water on my PC table so that while wiping it with a cloth later on it would be easy to clean the sticky dirt

then i started cleaning individual components .. it took about an hour to clean the GPU .. monitor(cleaning it with the polish) .. Hardisks and the slots

afterwards i cleaned the Pc table which was lying in the balcony ...

so after cleaning up the place it was time to clean the MOTHERBOARD which doesnt usually take time .. removing the dirt from the cooler and cleaning the whole mobo took around 45 mins

the cabby was clean .. hdsks, mobo, gpu, psu were ready to go .. assembling/cable management took around half hour .. started the pc but it would start .. so i tighted all the wires around gpu and psu .. the pc started .. brought the pc table inside set the monitor, mouse pad ....

after few cuts and bruises the job was done ....

materials used for cleaning .... small air pump .. brush .. atleast 5 hankey sized clothes .. polish .. water water n water
<
.. screwdriver set

time consumed .. 7-8 hours including lunch break ....

it usually takes around 5-6 hours continuous to clean but taking snaps cleaning hands + starting the pc again after removing all the buttons from ALIENWARE KB to enable ALien fx to take snaps of the keyboard with various colors (which was a dream since i got the kb) .. that consumed extra time

my pc config :

MOBO : Asus P5q3 Deluxe wifi

CPU : Q6600
