Teclast M50HD - Movies on the Move !

So here I am back with review of another Chinese product. This time it is a PMP.
This is the Teclast M50HD (a.k.a Nationite OS-72 on mp4nation.com).
MP4Nation.com sells the same player with a re-branded name and slightly different accessories.

Reviewer's Note: All pics are 800 X 600 and hosted on TE server. You click on them to get a larger image. Some of the images may not be good because of low light conditions. :ashamed:

The Box

This is the Box in which this PMP comes. Ignore whatever is written on the box as this company has the same design box for all its products. Even my mp3 player box has HD and MP4 written over it. The lady in the pic is supposed to be some famous Chinese singer. Cannot confirm but. :ohyeah:

What’s Inside ??

Following things are available by default in the box

1. The MP4 Player itself.
2. Earphones
3. USB Cable
4. A small adaptor
5. Manual and Warranty card (both in Chinese)

199014a799d470408a.jpg

There is no charger provided and hence the only way to charge this PMP is to either connect it to the computer USB port or get a small wall charger that accepts USB.

Now in the picture you can see that there are couple of video cables and a remote. Now this, for some reason is not included in the box. In fact none of the teclast MP4 players have them and have to be purchased separately.

[BREAK=Accessories and Specifications]

Accessories

The remote is really handy when controlling player from a distance say while watching movie on TV.
The earphones as expected are crap. I think this has become a norm with all (barring a few) the PMPs / MP3 players that bundled earphones are always of sub-standard quality.

Here is what the PMP has to offer

[BREAK=Audio]

Audio

This PMP can play MP3, WAV, WMA, APE and FLAC audio formats. The sound quality is surprisingly very good and the bass is great. There are usual equalizer settings like Rock, Jazz etc available. Do not expect anything from the stock earphones. They are really bad. I used EP 630s with this and found the SQ to be really good. The equalizer settings actually work and there is 3D sound settings also which I suppose not much people will be interested in. This is similar to the one which was advertised in the Samsung AD by Aamir Khan.

The Playlist looks something like this

Music Player

199014a79a4ebb1d55.jpg

On the downside, the player cannot read ID Tags :@ I mean this is the most basic thing and it does not do that. Also album art is not displayed but there is space for the same (on left hand side). I hope future firmware upgrades will solve this problem. The volume settings go a decent 30 level and I found 15 to be very loud, but considering I was using IEMs, that was ok. It also has setting to specify what we are using as sound output. Default is headphones but there are other options like Small speakers, Large speakers etc. Not sure if they make any difference.
Then there is the usual Normal Play, Random Play, Repeat etc.

Note: I had a few problems playing FLACs wherein the switching from one file to another was sluggish and often gave the feeling that player had hanged.

[BREAK=Radio]

Radio

Nothing much to talk about. It is the simple plain radio with manual and automatic tuning. Even the signal strength can be adjusted as Low, Mid, High or Auto. Not sure what is its purpose and how it works. I mean why would anyone want to have low signal strength in the first place. Better keep it on Auto.

[BREAK=Videos]

Videos

Now coming to the most interesting part, the video, this is what we basically buy a big screen PMP for… right ?
This player can play a plethora of video formats but I did not have the opportunity to try all. Although according to the website it plays RM, RMVB, AVI but I suppose other formats like VOB, MPG, DAT and FLV should be playable.
It can also display subtitles (.srt) associated with the movie but sometimes if we fast forward the movie then the sync between the movie and its subtitles go for a toss.
The videos look awesome on the 800 x 480 , 16:9 screen

Here are the various options available for Videos

199014a79a7b52c85c.jpg

You can change the aspect ratio of the video and when in full screen the video looks even better.

16:9 Ratio

Full Screen Video

199014a79a7222a792.jpg

Pressing the menu button while the video is playing brings the On-screen controls

199014a79a7228913c.jpg

[BREAK=TV OUT]

TV Out

This PMP has a TV Out feature which allows you to view the video or photographs on a TV screen. The TV system can be set to PAL or NTSC from the player itself.

We can also select the output whether it is general out or component out.

I don’t know if this was an isolated case but I had problems while getting the audio to come out of TV speakers. May be the cable is faulty. The video was coming fine on TV but there was a constant hissing sound from TV speakers, the ones which come when a certain bright color comes on screen.
In my case the video was coming on TV screen but audio was coming from the player itself. :S

The PMP can play RMVB video upto 720p. Now considering the idea of playing 720p on this screen is ridiculous as the screen resolution itself is 800 x 480 and therein we are playing a 1280 x 720 video. Although this may look better on a Large TV screen I suppose.

[BREAK=A Few Pics]

Here are a few pics of the movie in action on this gorgeous screen. Although you may not get much idea from the pics, believe me the PQ is really great. And the images looks very crisp on the screen.

[BREAK=Picture Viewer]

Picture Viewer

You can view JPG, BMP files on this. Pictures can also be rotated on screen.
It is not possible for us to decide if the picture will come in full screen or not as it decides itself as to how it will be displayed. I mean whether the picture occupies the entire real estate of the screen available or not is not in user's control.

The Matrix display of pics is like this. You cannot click on any picture and view unless all the pics of the matrix are loaded, an activity which takes time depending on the picture resolution and size

[BREAK=Other Features]

Other features of this PMP include

EBook Reader - TXT Viewer
You can open text files and also make the player read it for you as it has a text to speech feature. As the reading is going on the text being read is highlighted. I personally feel that this is quiet convenient. You may also set bookmarks so as to continue later on.

Sorry but I forgot to put any English text file. :ashamed:

I am not sure if we can change or remove the background image as this is a prick in the eye while reading ebooks and causes inconvenience.

Browser

Here you may browse the internal memory or the TF card contents irrespective of the format the are in. Like a normal file browser come manager. It s also possible to delete files from here.

Games

There are a few games in this PMP which can be played using the standard play, pause, forward buttons available. Here is one (similar to the famous flash game Gold Miner)

[BREAK=Closing Points]

Closing Points

Overall this is a very good PMP with good sound quality and even better picture quality. Also has standard functions like FM Radio, MIC and recorder. An ebook reader (text files) and also Text to Speech application. Lyric support for songs. The build quality is very good and the unit itself is heavy. Must be 200 to 250 Gms (not sure though)

Damages – This player was purchased by a colleague of mine here and it cost around 3500 rupees for the player and an additional 210 rupees for the cable and remote kit of the same company.

Where to Buy ??

Unfortunately the same brand player cannot be bought if you are not in Mainland. Although amazon.cn has international delivery option but have not explored it. So another alternative is the Nationite OS 72 from mp4nation.net which is exactly same, just rebranded and about 2k expensive.

Thanks for your time. Comments are welcome :)

Great review. What do you think of the build quality? Somehow with these (cheap) Chinese products I am always waiting for them to die on me. What about warranty and support?

Edit - Just saw your mention of the build quality.
How do I rate the review?

^^ Company warranty is there for a year i think but once you get the product out of mainland then it is bhagwan bharose.

WTF 3.5K for the PMP which supports whole loads of formats,games,text files etc .Hate u Rakshit :P for being in China and enjoying good stuff at cheap rate :@.

Btb nice review,Cant rep u,as i have to pass around some reps before i rep u again :(.Does it support gapless playback??.Is the player really that heavy(250gms)??

^^ Yes player is heavy because its build quality is good. Not sure about exact weight but it is quiet heavy.

BTW here is something more for you metalspree

This player is not that i have bought but a colleague in my office bought this
I am going to buy a player named Teclast C500HD which can play almost all video formats including MKV at 720p
Supports USB OTG and NTFS partition
Has HDMI and normal TV Out :bleh:
Cost -> 500 RMB or 3500 Rupees :ohyeah: :ohyeah:

C500HD

Dude tats awesome :D

PS: Please do not reveal that ur gonna get such a good player .I mght steal it from u ,when u come to India:P

Good review mate! Good to see some Chinese products that defy our preconceived notions that all (not-so-famous-brand) Chinese stuff is of poor quality!

good effort :) guys before going ga-ga about any product-price, first look at the After Sale Service or Support. They are offering at low price since there is no support or after sale service of this product. A Good brand/company become good with a good product+good support+matching price. I am not against the Chinese brand/cheap product - but while buying any electronic stuff - I consider support as a top priority.

^^ There is warranty available, just that once the product is out of China you cannot do anything. I (i mean my colleague) have got a warranty card with serial number and a bill for the product. I just need to go to the shop from where we bought incase something goes wrong.

Teclast is a reputed company in China selling these PMPs/ MP3 Players etc

dude I read that in your review which good for those who are in China.I want indian warranty.If they want to make it official in India, they have to setup the entire things here in India and which need some investment which will add the cost of the product.I am not doubting the quality of product - what I am pointing is that lack of warranty and comments of someone in the thread comparing with some good brands.

^^ True

At the end of day for anyone not in China, it is a cheap chinese product. Even i fall in this category. So the thumb rule is when we take these products we can only HOPE to see them in action for a prolonged period of time. Of course it would not die out immediately and hence it is anytime advisible not to buy anything very expensive here at least if you intend to take that stuff back to your home country.

this is really a good effort rakrules and a good way to introduce with good vfm Chinese brands and breaking the notion of "cheap-n-bad" Chinese brand image in India REPPED:hap2:; keep it coming. I hope some good Chinese brand will enter into Indian market officially with all the muscles and make it heaven for us- customers/consumers and hell for the other vendors (read Apple,Creative,Sony,Nokia etc)

^^ One of them has already entered i suppose.
People are aware about the Meizu M8 cell phone.

It has an Indian website

Meizu M8 Mobile Phone: Official India Launch Website: Meizu India Fan Club

This phone as per their India website is costing 24k (street price will be less) and the same is available here under 2000 RMB or under 14000 rupees
But as we all are aware about Chinese phones, i have not thought about getting this. Simply because of the notion about chinese phones and when i tried asking myself - 14k for a chinese phone :ohyeah:

Here are a couple of links from Newegg China and amazon.cn I can bet that i can get this phone for like 10-12k at the local electronics malls as these websites usually have a little inflated prices.

õ°Öùú - Meizu ÷È×å M8 8G Õýʽ°æ ÖÇÄÜÊÖ»ú ºÚÉ«×îÈËÆø÷È×åM8怫õ°£¡Öùúiphone£¡

??M8(MEIZU M8)????(???16G??????iphone)-????-?????

thats good; but a bad marketing/management decision in entering with a high end model( as chinese repu is not good here in india). they should enter with low end models first then gradually increasing their offering with midium and higher end model

heh.. but the problem with entering with low end products for chinese cos will be already established chinese clones in the market, i mean what would differentiate between them? in general public's mind cheap chinese clones as well as cheap chinese products would be and i guess is the one and same, as the saying goes "teen mahina use karo and fake do" :) but i see your point as well,, i mean someone buying nice shiny 24K chinese phone, only to hear "arree woh tho chinese phone hai"(as in chinese clones) heh.. so i guess these genuine chinese companies have to really really work hard to establish and differentiate themselves..
